Re: Digweed last night on Kiss 100

You guys will have to forgive me for being a bit of an overall optimist when it comes to my outlook on life and the things that it encompasses. Not that I'm some holistic, pollyanna, hippy but I do my best to avoid negativity or at the least, confront and attempt to engage it.

In no way am I saying that you guys/gals can't have your own opinion about Digweed and his evolving style. What I am noticing though is that it's the same few people that find the need to let everyone know in every thread where the word "Digweed" is found that his shows "don't do it for me anymore". I'm trying to reach out to those people and say it's ok. It's ok if you don't like Digweed anymore, move on. As I stated in another thread, this is a discussion board and we're all doing just that - discussing. But for the pope's sake, we get it. We understand that you don't like the glitchy, electro, techy sounds that are pervading many artists' music these days.

Thinking about the debate again this morning I realized that there are those of us that will welcome, accept, and embrace the changes that are taking place. Then there are those that will fight it, kicking and screaming. Unfortunately, they are probably the ones that are still wearing tight denim jackets with their 'flock-o-seagulls' hairdo driving their 1984 Pontiac Fiero or Dodge Daytona.

    I still love ya Chuck.

I'm glad to know that I'm not in the minority with my thoughts on how this change of sounds doesn't seem to be for the better - these electro-sounding tracks are just way too prevalent in too many djs sets these days and they really don't have much soul to them at all...I miss the lush sounds of previous years... Too many annoying beeps and clicks these days...

I believe the term is progressive house, so therefore it is any house music that feels like it is progressing, i.e - moving on. Therefore to be a true pioneer of progressive house you need to push in different areas and be open to change. It may not work or be loved at first, but isnt this the reason we all listened to digweed in the first place - the fact he played records no-one else would have had the vision to play.

this is what he is trying to do, and we should just enjoy the variety and go along with the wave. If you dont like it, just listen to someone else - as skahound says there are literally hundreds of young talented underated dj's out there playing everything under the sun.

Same in Fabric, flawless mixing just tunes i really didn't get off on. And thats why i go clubbing to forget reality and have a good boogey to cool tunes.

Fuck change, all I hear in work is 'change is part of the plan' ' change in practices' change, change in working conditions, change, change, change.
Change as i'm sure most ppl have or will find out is rarely for the better. Change is an inept attempt to solve a problem with short term disruptive methods. Progression is where it is at. Slow steady inprovement on a solid base. Moving on neatly....

Progressive is a genre, i would say it is difficult to 'progress' to a different style completely.

Anyhow I liked the old style Diggers, but evolution waits for no man.

Re: Digweed last night on Kiss 100

"Progressive" house as a genre hasn't been progressive in years- it's the same sound that's been played since the late 90s. I would consider modern tech house and deep house much more progressive than "Progressive House".

As for Digweed's latest set, it's no different than what he's been playing on Kiss 100 for the last year. Admittedly, I can't stand the DP track, and some of the other tracks are a little less than groovy. This comes as no surprise.

I agree with what some of you are saying as far as how he's searching for another sound. Dark prog is so 2001...really. I was disappointed by his set at Crobar w/Sasha; The Man Like blew him away...and he did in fact play a great deal of tracks in that set that he does on his radio show, so there's not as big of a difference between his radio show and his live sets as some might think. Having 20,000W behind you doesn't hurt...

Finally, so many people are playing "progressive" that he needs to differentiate himself from the pack. Regardless of what I think of his mixes, I don't hear the same selections from many others. But last year, there was little to no difference between what he was playing and some run-of-the-mill Proton Radio Dj.

There's a TON of great music available right now. Digweed plays some of it; I think he could be playing more and not jeopardize his sound or his distinctiveness.

I think that all of you are right. Progressive is so damn hard to define, especially lately when there are so many types of beats incorporated into sets of traditional prog DJs. At the same time, seeing one of the greats live will always be extremely entertaining. And, of course, there is a big difference between "entertaining" and "fuckin amazing."

Now that's just wrong. Are you even familiar with the lineup over there? Let me throw a few 'run-of-the-mill' names at you (in no particular order):

                            Neil Quigley
                            Kasey Taylor & Chris Meehan
                            Steve Gerrard
                            Blake Potter & Casey Spengler
                            Habersham & Numinous
                            Paul Louth
                            Viton & Jose Zamora
                            Muzo, Barish, Fuchs, Mehmet, Yunus
                            Jeff Belfi
                            Chloe
                            Christopher Lobsinger
                            Tim Skinner

Seriously, I could go on for an hour. I don't consider any of those or the number of others to be 'run-of-the-mill'.

My point is that everyone is playing the same tracks! Check out the track lists. Balance record pool all the way.

Please- I hope no one takes that comment personally, but we have to admit that there's WAY too much redundancy in this department.

A lot of the names you posted are excellent producers, but it just seems to me that everyone's playing the same sound in their DJ sets.

And when everybody's playing the same thing, regardless of talent, it becomes run-of-the-mill. Even S+D aren't exempt from this criticism.

EDIT: It is possible to be a great producer and an average DJ; there are tons of examples which I won't get into. I'm really just venting my frustration with this genre which is so bloated- it seems like every day there's a new mix with some "hot new talent", and I go to listen and it's the same old prog. This happens everywhere, but Proton Radio being a nexus of this music makes it a target as well. I apologize to those DJs who truly do what we expect- push the sound forward.

Point taken, but I/we will agree to disagree. I'd be more than happy to post tracklists of those particular DJs, and I would argue that it's well diversified.
