    Home Theater System/Receiver/DVD/MP3

I'm looking to buy a new Home Stereo system, but I want something that plays MP3 and reads MP3 from DVD... looking to spend no more than $400-500. I guess something like [THIS]... anybody have any recommendations?

^that's okay if you're not really expecting to be blown away.

if i were you, i'd ebay some used higher end stuff and put yourself together a nicer system for the same money.

Sony just isn't my thing. But i'm also not one of those "home theater in a box" types either, so i'm really no help.

The sony looks okay, but dont expect it to be 840 watts. Im sure it will be decent for a small room application.

Don't expect good sound from that. and it's probably good to avoid BestBuy and the like if you want something quality, as Jenks was saying...especially Sony! Stuff sucks mostly, with few exceptions (like their headphones). Pick up a Sound and Vision magazine; they always review that sort of gear and have all the price ranges.

It would probably be best to get a speaker system separately and get a decent receiver and DVD player instead of buying all in a box.

Crutchfield usually has a good selection but to avoid bestbuy I went and looked at some stuff on ebay and this is what I found.

Can never go wrong with Bose but I just broke your budget... (By 3 hundo).

that above is pioneer and is pretty descent and you are under budget

either way man you gotta do what you gotta do but please do stick the middle finger to sony though, they suck ass (had a bad experience with a sony reciever catching on fire and they wouldn't cover it, blamed it on my ps2 covering the vent shafts, so i threw the ps2 out the fucking window and got an xbox and a gamecube)

There's a little Paradigm speaker system called the Cinema HTiB that looks like it should be nice, for ~$550. Their stuff is pretty reputable.

I wasn't going to buy that one... I just went onto BestBuy real quick to find some sort of demo of what I wanted. Looking for opinions out there for what I :should: get

One of my audiophile buddies ordered a few pairs of these in the past, and they sound fucking pimp. great, great pair of speakers

This will be my second review of the AR.COM (Ed Frias DIY) speaker. Since the construction of my first pair two years ago, I have built 6 more pair by request for friends and family. Everyone who listens to them is absolutely stunned by their sound--their first question after listening is "how can I get a pair?" I still am amazed at this simple two-way bookshelf speaker, I have yet to find aything in its class to rival it. Paradigm reference couldn't touch it, neither B&W, neither M&K. Granted all three of these manufacturers make excellent sounding speakers, they just do not have the imaging, the accuracy, the detail, the airiness, the liveliness, of the AR.COM DIY speaker. Ed Frias (designer of this speaker) has been more than helpful in answering my questions regarding these speakers and other audio questions over the years. He deserves some sort of award. For anyone considering this project I absolutely recommend it. I would be more than happy to answer questions regarding the AR.COM speaker--and depending on what I have going on at the time, I would be more than willing to construct a pair for someone if they are not comfortable building it themselves. However, if you do have the time, skills, and tools this project is a must--there is nothing more gratifying to sit down and listen to the finished product. tverner@hotmail.com if you have any questions or need help.

                  Strengths:
Imaging, liveliness, dynamics, accuracy, cost. Quality of drivers. Superior Crossover design and components. Can't say enough good things about this speaker.

                  Weaknesses:
Not enough people know abou them

HK is good stuff. I run all HK in my home theater, and have for years. Great bang for the buck.

HK is great but probably out of your price range if you're looking to spend about $500. I'd probably go with a Yamaha system. It's much better than the sonys.

that's what is nice when you piece your system together. you get upgardes along the way. my buddy has about twenty four speakers in his house. lol. one night we get super tossed and hooked them all up together and played "wish you were here" ... fuck. that was a good night.

check outpost.com every once in a while. they tend to have polk speakers on sale pretty regularly.
