    An evening with Hernan Cattaneo

SUPER EARLYBIRD TICKETS ON SALE NOW @: funf darkbeat pres Hernan Cattaneo (5 Hours +) Tickets, South - Eventbrite

On Sunday June 9 – funf and Darkbeat threw 2 separate parties on the same night. Jeff Mills at The Bottom End (funf social) and John Digweed at The Prince Of Wales (for Darkbeat’s 10th Birthday). Both attracted well over 2,500 people combined. The success and vibe of these two separate parties on two different sides of Melbourne triggered fond memories of the golden years of Melbourne's dance music scene from the early 2000's, where parties were done for the love, and DJ's played longer than 3 hours, it definitely wasn't about the money, and punters left with a smile on their dial from an amazing night.
Now, the two party entities join forces to bring you Melbourne favourite Hernan Cattaneo. As he’s proven time and time again on the Australian club circuit, Hernan Cattaneo is a rare kind of DJ. Whether he’s given two hours or eight hours to work with, the Argentinean always finds music nobody else plays., and plays it like no one else .This September, he’s back.
Hernan will be playing his first ever set at The Prince Of Wales, which has proven to be one of Melbourne’s premier night clubs in recent times, with attention to detail and a killer Outline Sound System – we will be ensuring all the meticulous details you demand are covered.
Hernan Cattaneo is confirmed for a minimum 5 hour set. Get ready, this event is set to go down in the history books.

    HERNAN CATTANEO
For some DJs, music is more than just their passion or occupation – it’s the reason for their existence, the thing that keeps their world turning. Hernan Cattaneo is that special breed. Across his three decade journey through music, the legendary South American DJ has lived his life through the music that inspires him; inspiring thousands of electronic music lovers across the globe in the process. As a respected label owner and producer, Cattaneo’s creative output remains as plentiful as ever. In just two years, his Sudbeat label has risen up as a leading light in melodic electronic music – regularly releasing material from names like Guy J, Henry Saiz, Nick Warren and Danny Howells. Hernan’s own tracks have provided other highlights in the label’s growing discography, with the Argentinean electronic music ambassador currently working on many studio projects.
Sharing these sounds – and those that inspire him – is at the heart of Hernan’s musical mission and is something he achieves through his relentless touring schedule. A resident at the UK’s longest running weekly event The Gallery @ London’s Ministry of Sound, Hernan’s DJ passport is stamped with the most respected dance events on the planet. From Serbia’s Exit to Las Vegas Electric Daisy Carnival, Spain’s Monegros to Holland’s Dance Valley, just about every major dance event has been graced by Hernan’s expertly weaved DJ journeys.
Blessed with a deeply ingrained knowledge of house music and its many electronic roots, Hernan’s own DJ journey can be traced back to the mid-80s in Buenos Aires. Fascinated by pioneering synth-pop and post-punk bands like Depeche Mode and New Order, Cattaneo soon became consumed by imported 12”s from the likes of Frankie Knuckles, Derrick May and Inner City. Before long, the young music lover’s instinctive desire to DJ and share this new found love of Chicago and Detroit based sounds had lead him to his first – and now legendary – residency at Buenos Aires Clubland.
Clubland became the epicentre of Argentina’s burgeoning dance scene and Hernan rose up as its spiritual leader. It is here where he earned the respect – and friendship – of legendary DJs like John Digweed, Sasha, and – most significantly – Perfecto boss Paul Oakenfold, who invited Cattaneo to join him on Perfecto.
With the window of global opportunity opened, the Argentinean ambassador impressed at every turn. Club giants Cream soon recruited Cattaneo as their South American resident and were impressed enough to install him as international resident at Cream Liverpool & Ibiza. Rapidly gaining a taste and skill for the larger stage, Hernan soon followed with appearances at festivals like Nevada’s legendary Burning Man as well as key debuts at European institutions like Homelands, Bedrock, Pacha and Fabric. By the time, Hernan had mixed Perfecto’s first international mix CD – South America volume – he was confirmed as one of those rare DJs able to transform the DJ set into a true art form. Each individual set became a complex voyage through genres, emotions and sound.
Both a true DJs DJ and a people’s favourite, Hernan’s popularity has spiralled in the years since. Now respected as one of electronic music’s true legends, Cattaneo stands proud as a DJ, producer and ambassador of the highest pedigree. From John Digweed’s standard bearing Bedrock imprint to Manchesterīs Hacienda Records or the legendary Ministry of Sound, a host of electronic music’s most pioneering labels have all called on Hernan’s studio skills at some point over the past years. He is also one of a select breed of DJs to have enjoyed more than a decade in the DJ Magazine Top 100 poll.
Known for his love of all music, regardless of genre, Hernan’s unique ability to weave stories from sounds are also responsible for some of the most celebrated mix CDs of recent years. Back in 2005, it spoke volumes on Hernan’s rising stock that he was hand-picked to succeed DJ legends like John Digweed, Deep Dish and Sasha on the aptly named Masters series. Seizing the opportunity, Hernan’s debut marked him out as a legend in his own right. Widely loved and acclaimed, his individual mix shifted seamlessly through genres and was coloured with both the rich seam of melody and lush lulling groove that his fans have come to love and know him for.
In the year since, he has followed with four more mix CDs for the globally renowned Renaissance – including their 50th ever album in 2009 and his acclaimed 2010 album ‘Parallel’, which featured no less than 12 of his own productions and remixes.
For the many thousands of music lovers that lap up their sounds the world over, these CDs provide a perfect snapshot of what Cattaneo is all about. It’s that human connection that drives Cattaneo further through music. And whether he’s taking crowd on an epic journey at festivals like Coachella, Exit and Creamfields or beaming his sounds across the globe through his weekly podcast and radio show on Delta FM 90.3, Buenos aires,he is able to be inspired and inspire in equal measure.

Hernan Cattaneo talks Australian tour plans and talented guys named Guy

MON 19TH AUG, 2013 BY NICK JARVIS IN NEWS600 VIEWS

Legendary progressive house stalwart Hernan Cattaneo has built a well-deserved reputation for journey-man sets over his 20-year-plus career, and Australia will get our semi-annual chance to take a trip with the Argentinian this September. Ahead of his four swift September dates in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Perth, inthemix scored a few minutes with Cattaneo as he touched down briefly in Barcelona to talk about exciting Israeli prog and keeping on top of new tunes with three small kids.

Whereabouts are you right now, and what’s on your ‘to do’ list for today?
I’m currently in Barcelona checking new music for my show tomorrow night in London, where I’ll be playing back to back with Guy J for The Gallery at Ministry of Sound.
When you’re not touring, what does a usual daily schedule look like for Hernan Cattaneo?
I have three little daughters so when I’m home I try to spend as much time as possible with them and my wife. Then there is also the DJ homework, the productions, the radio show, and also my label Sudbeat – that means I spend a good six hours a day listening to new music.
What’s coming up on Sudbeat over the next few months?
We have a lot! There is a Rob Hess EP with three really good tracks, Fran von Vie EP which includes some Uner mixes, Kassey Voorn track with Microtrauma & Muzarco mixes and also the debut album from Guy Mantzur.
You’re renowned for building up your sets over multiple hours –what’s the optimum set time, for you, to really get into it, without being stretched too far?
Five to six hours really works for me. You have two hours to play the deeper side at the beginning, then two more hours for the hypnotic and melodic stuff, and then the final part for big records or end of the night stuff.
What tune do you prefer to close sets with at the moment?
Last week a track from SIN COS TAN called Trust was doing it for me, but Guy J’s Dizzy Momentshas been the one track that I keep going back to.

Which producers are really impressing you at the moment? Whose tunes are making their way into your sets?
Luckily I can say a lot of producers have impressed me lately. There’s some superb stuff coming from Israel – it seems like all the producers that are named Guy make amazing music! I should also mention Chaim, Lonya, Sahar, Khen… Too many to mention!
With your international tour schedule, you must spend a lot of time waiting around in airports – how do you pass the time?
I pretty much spend a lot of time just working on music. Once you’re away from home you are 110% in DJ mode so for me it’s just music, music and more music!
Do you have an exercise routine while you’re on tour, to stay in fighting shape?
I do during the week at home. It’s mostly stretching exercises, which help a lot.
What’s been the most exciting party you’ve played in the past few months?
Last Sunday I played at Woodstock in Amsterdam back to back with Nick Warren, which was incredible.

Now that is a magazine cover !!!

Argentina-born Hernan Cattaneo began his love affair with house music in the late ’80s. He was just a kid, kicking around in his native Buenos Aires, when a friend brought back a collection of 12” records from Chicago. The sounds took hold in his imagination, and it wasn’t long before the young Cattaneo was spinning records around the city. A lot has changed since then – Cattaneo these days travels the world, routinely drawing crowds of thousands. Even with countless shows under his belt, though, Cattaneo hasn’t grown blasé about house music, and he still loves the groove above all. The first time I interviewed him, years ago, he made his feelings on the subject plain. “It’s always been the groove for me,” he said at the time. “You feel it or you don’t, and that makes the difference between tracks. When I first heard the Chicago house sound, I got locked into that rhythm, and never looked into anything else.”

By his own estimation, Cattaneo spends roughly half of every year on the road, playing his signature brand of progressive house everywhere from Tokyo to Tel Aviv. That means a lot of time spent driving to and from hotels and sitting in airport departure lounges – but it’s all worth it, he says, for the rush he still feels at the beginning of every set. “That’s the best part, no doubt,” he said in that earlier interview. “I love arriving at the club or festival, feeling the anticipation, thinking what you are going to play and then delivering the music, watching the faces, the reactions.” He doesn’t just show up at venues and start playing – such is his level of dedication that he spends weeks meticulously planning his sets, thinking about exactly which tracks will work in each venue and in each country. It’s all in the service of the groove.

His passions remain the same today. As someone who has been in the business for many years and stood shoulder-to-shoulder with some of the best – Paul Oakenfold was an early mentor, and he has played alongside the likes of Sasha and Digweed – does Cattaneo reckon he has accumulated a great deal of DJ wisdom along the way? “I would say a lot of experience,” he replies simply, “as I’ve been around for long and I’ve travelled the world nonstop for many years. That’s an immense privilege, and I could never be thankful enough for it. In many ways things have changed a lot since I started, but the fact that you are in front of a crowd trying to give them a good time by playing the music you like is the same as back then.”

Indeed, the role of the DJ has changed a lot over the span of Cattaneo’s career. DJs have gone from relatively anonymous record spinners to superstars in their own right – many are now celebrated figures who command huge appearance fees and have loyal followings. Cattaneo is one of them. “I’m not going to complain about popularity as that was never my goal,” he says. “My passion has always been about sharing the music I like with other people so I have definitely been really lucky, being able to reach so many people globally over the years. I went from playing for my sisters and their friends at home to massive amounts of people and that was a huge change, but of course [nothing] happened overnight. It took me a long time from playing in my room to the big stages.”

Last year, Cattaneo mixed a compilation in the ongoing Renaissance Masters series. In the digital age, when any music fan can mix and sequence their own compilation however they like, I ask Cattaneo if he worries about the changing marketplace for DJ mix albums – and indeed if he feels he has to work harder to keep people’s attention. “Not really,” he says. “The biggest difference now is the digital world as it makes your album heard by ten times more people that what selling CDs exposed you to, so you have more exposure than ever before. You must do something that is interesting to your followers and, if possible, that still will sound good in ten years’ time. My first Masters compilation is almost a decade old and still sounds just right, so I feel I did a good job.”

Cattaneo’s most recent Masters mix was unique in that it featured quite a number of his own original tracks. Including so much of his own material was an unorthodox move, but it paid off with critics and fans alike. “The electronic music world is more hands-on than ever before,” Cattaneo explains. “You can still be playing other people’s tracks and that’s fine, but technology really gives you the tools to do a lot more – firstly, remixing and editing, and then producing your own stuff. That of course also gives me a good starting point to make a full-on artist album at some point. That’s not next on the cards for me but hopefully soon.”

Turning to the live setting, Cattaneo casts his mind back to recent shows. Is there one in particular that sticks out as the craziest or most memorable? “I just came from Burning Man … it was absolutely incredible,” he says. “I’ve been there before, a long time ago, but this one was definitely the most interesting event I’ve been at for ages. It’s a festival of arts, culture and music all together, and it brings people of all ages for the time of their lives.” It’s a truly amazing experience, he says, and something that any daring music fan should try at least once. “Since I left Argentina to live in Europe, I’ve done more than 1500 international shows, and this is, without a doubt, one of the five most memorable ever.” Cattaneo is no stranger to this part of the world, having played Australia many times over the years. It may not quite be up there with Burning Man, but he’s still happy to be coming back. “I love Australia!” he exclaims. “I could live there as it’s a perfectly balanced place. As a DJ I have done great shows over the years. If I had to choose just one I would be in trouble, but I had some amazing moments in Melbourne and Sydney, and I must say that Brisbane is always really special as well. Most shows are great fun to play at, and once I even played a very small gig in Geelong, Melbourne, and had a blast. Australian DJs are very good and play quality music so the result is that when you play there you find crowds that are really well educated and open-minded, so you can go play six hours and the club is full from the beginning till the end.”

Ok, Breathing properly again. But suffering massive withdrawal symptoms !! I just want to dance !!!

                    Melbourne ,

He started off a little differently to the way we expected, he was pretty much straight into it , while we expected starting a little slower and building as it was a long set. But we are fast learners. When we and he hit that groove, it was amazingly wonderful !! . Just track , after track , after track of incredibly great dance music. Lot's of "How good is this!! " Although a little more forcefully  Quite a few "The Master!!! " As per usual I am crap with trainspotting , it's that feeling instead of listening when I am dancing thing But of course The Field was just so beautiful and Dizzy Moments stunning!! Always sooo much better hearing these sort of tracks live on a good system. And Hernan knows how to use these systems better that anyone I know. It is such a joy to watch him create this music in front of your eyes !! Music just seems to radiate from him. Ooh, getting shivers thinking about it

So another great night , the crowd just amazing, Hernan's crowd in Melbourne would have to be one of the friendliest , nicest in the world. Really eclectic , very discerning, lovely , lovely people . So many that only come out for Hernan Over the last few days, I have had emails , texts and phone calls telling me just how happy Hernan made them. One girl told me she loved me because I talked her into going

The venue worked well , music sounded great on all of the dancefloor. I usually complain about strobe lighting etc, but either the music was so good I didn't notice or they did it right.

                    Brisbane.

Hernan played some wonderful music, but the crowd was not good, and they closed us down before he had finished. I have never known a stickier floor in my life

Sydney and Perth were apparently the best gigs of the tour for all concerned but unfortunately I wasn't there. However I did get texts from Sydney "Best birthday ever " "Best time of my life "

                    And a Perth comment

                    "Matt Nedved
all I wanted to say for the moment is MASSIVE THANK YOU but when I wake up I will write up a decent and proper summary of the Perth event because what you did to us last night cannot be described in the words known to people in the dictionary! You are the greatest DJ of all times and it has been the most amazing 5 hours we have ever experienced here!!! more to follow in few hours. THANK YOU."

Which made me feel all warm inside even if I wasn't there.

Overall, got to dance the most I have and to the best music since he was here last. .!!

Downside, The sleeping dancer has been awakened and is in desperate need of more great music to dance to.

As Danny Howells has been announced as the next Balance I am hoping he will tour soon. But nothing is the same as Hernan.

This is only Youtube I could find for Australia. Which in one way gladdens my heart. The music is just too good to stop and take videos And youtubes are never that good
