Are you still compatible with today's EDM?

EDM has changed over the last 10 years. A lot. It's become very mainstream and now EDM is Tiesto, Guetta, Deadmau5, Avicii, and Steve Aoki. Especially the new, younger generation of fans, they don't know the EDM from "back then".

The big-named DJs of today... I just simply cannot listen to them. Even when I take my old fart self to the clubs once or twice a year, the rest of the younger blood are out enjoying the new wave of EDM. But I find no joy in it. My taste is just not compatible anymore with what is popular today.

My buddies went to TommorowWorld festival this weekend. They're around the same age as me (30-something). And they're posting lots of cool photos... but the videos... as fantastic as the stage looks, with lights and art galore, with the set even coupled with synchronized fireworks, I cannot enjoy the music. It makes me glad I didn't go b/c even if I went, I'd just probably stand there and bitch about how bad the music has become that everyone else is enjoying. An old stubborn, grouch I am.

To that, I'm thankful that Diggers has pretty much remained true to his own style of music, not deviating too much or changing to sound like many others.

Anyone else find themselves in the same situation?

Funny you should post this.... I've gone through a similar experience, except I believe Diggers has always been faithful to new music. I haven't liked all that he has played, but I give him credit to sticking to what he believes in.

Festivals are not a gauge of EDM today. People don't go to festivals for the music. They go there for the production as you described.

Surely if you looked on Resident Advisor and checked out DJs in clubs it's a different experience because you're going for the DJs.

I just caught Joris Voorn two nights ago at Output and he played better than I expected, no journey though.

Re: Are you still compatible with today's EDM?

I feel like this year we got a lot of amazing music coming from the "older" DJs and also some brilliant stuff from the younger ones .. like for example Guy J's Balance and Henry Saiz's LP. It also seems like there are plenty of labels/producers out there that still stick to the sound you are referring to.

The amounts of good music posted on this board alone is enough to keep any EDM listener happy Then there is also soundcloud where you can find a lot of good stuff.

And all of the older guys are still out there playing what they love.. it almost feels like non of them care about what the "trend" is, they just play what they like which is way better.. in a sense, they have nothing to prove anymore so they don't care.

This year so far i've seen Hernan&Nick b2b which was simply amazing.. great music

I saw Hawtin at WMC & EDC.. both of them were solid shows

I saw Ben Klock at a small intimate venue in Miami

I saw Digweed at the Vagabond .. always special

Also at EDC and Club Lavo in Las Vegas .. same night

Sasha at EDC... one of the best sets I've heard live

Next i will go see Guy J on the 10th and Digweed on the 25th of next month in San Francisco.. and that's going to do it for this year i think. Overall... i am very happy with what i saw/heard.

So you can still get amazing music, if you look for it

Re: Are you still compatible with today's EDM?

Internet, the new technology, the kids with his new laptops,
the djs who want to become famous faster than expected
producing shit tracks without absolutly nothing of quality
and kids following them, the evolution of the music, for good or
for bad, there are a many factors in the industry that push the EDM
to down, there are a couple of djs that still keep the quality and
interest but the shit is very big outside, the massive information
on the net is counterproductive, in some case, for the new kids.

Fortunately, for us, there are many new producers and talents,
who want to give quality and good elements to the EDM,
Guy J is the most notable case in this new era.

Especially I think this year is great with many and amazing tracks.
we need to know where to look and who follow, thats all.

Re: Are you still compatible with today's EDM?

EDM is just another genre I enjoy, vs being solely focused on it as i once was in college and after. Soundcloud has enabled me to search and find exactly what sub genre of edm I want to hear any time. I have no complaints really... at least none that I can think of atm.

It was fun while it lasted...

I'm still enjoying it a lot! I went out with my mates this weekend (all 30+) and we had a great time dancing to a 6 hour set of Tiefschwarz. The next day we still had enough energy to drag our selfs out to watch a live show of Fuck Buttons.
We also get all that EDM crap here but we're lucky enough to get as much good stuff as well.

guys like paul oakenfold and paul van dyke were the EDM people of their time and considered in the same way as many of these new dj's are imo

absolutely not, I'm 32, been clubbing since I was 16, and I enjoy it more now than I ever did. Friday night we had Tiefschwarz play for 6 hours. Cant beat it.

I just can't get into today's EDM no matter who it is by... I don't know what it is, but I'm happy with listening to mostly pre-2000 music, some post-2000 as well. There's one song that's from the new era that was I loved"
