    [Data Transmission]

2013 has already seen some stellar collaborations. From high profile team ups between Nile Rodgers and a host of stars, most notably Daft Punk to more underground projects like techno originator Juan Atkins hooking up with Basic Channel’s Moritz Von Oswald to form Borderland or Regis departing from Sandwell District to form Jealous God and Concrete Fence, it certainly has been a year where teamwork has been the name of the game.

The latest artists to share a new joint project are John Digweed and Nick Muir with the Bedrock boss revealing the pairing have collaborated on a three disc album set entitled Versus and that it will be seeing release via his imprint this October. The project sprung from humble beginnings with the duo initially planning a “remix swap” before an “extended EP” was written and “then out of nowhere... an album with many twists and turns.”

As a project it has seen Digweed and Muir edit twelve of their current favorites with efforts from Jozif, Psycatron, Guy J and Pig & Dan all featuring on the first CD before being mixed together by Digweed before the second reveals ten of them unmixed. The third disc however is the one likely to generate excitement as it boasts eight original cuts from Digweed and Muir and will showcase their time in the studio together. . In addition to the limited-edition CD release, which also features a 20-page booklet, Bedrock will release a triple-vinyl edition with 11 of the Versus tracks.

    [Mix Junkies]

John Digweed and Nick Muir are two legends within the dance music scene. When they team up together, they create the dynamic production duo Bedrock, that has been adorned by fans for years.

When John Digweed and Nick Muir team up for a project, they have to go above and beyond the call of duty and revolutionize how people do things. That is exactly what is presented with their brand new 3-part concept collaboration album Versus.

Versus is a landmark celebration in new and innovation. Having hand selected 12 of their favorite producers, who have really caught their attention, John Digweed and Nick Muir have challenged these respected artists to showcase their skills. Featuring talents like The Japanese Popstars, MArco Bailey, Jamie Stevens, Guy J, Pig&Dan, and more, John Digweed and Nick Muir have combined with each of these artists to create a special “versus” track.

The first CD contains all these tracks seamlessly mixed together by John Digweed, while the second CD features all these tracks spotlighted on their own. The third CD is set to showcase the incredible production skill of John Digweed and Nick Muir. With just a handful of tracks completed, John Digweed and Nick Muir linked together to give the public 8 new and unreleased tracks featuring the Digweed/Muir name with it all mixed together by Nick Muir.

"What started out as a remix swap then an extended EP then out of nowhere after 12 months an album and with many twists and turns, Versus is finally here featuring a set of amazing collaborations and remixes with some of our favourite producers from around the world. We’d like to say a huge thank you to these brilliant artists for making this project happen" [John Digweed]

    03. COMA - Missing Piece (Computer Camp Mix) (In Technicolor Remixes EP) [Kompakt | KOM 287]

Having released their debut full-length IN TECHNICOLOR (Kompakt 279) to universal acclaim earlier this year, COMA's Marius Bubat and Georg Conrad are pleased to present IN TECHNICOLOR REMIXE: the second 12" for the album after primer MY ORBIT (Kompakt 27 features the considerable talents of TERRANOVA, ROOSEVELT and ZOMBIES IN MIAMI, who each deliver powerful reworks of their favourite tracks, resulting in a fine collection of highly varied cuts ready to ignite the dance floor of your choice. Starting with angular stomper OUT OF CONTROL, masters of horizontal thrust TERRANOVA prove once again to be at the top of their game, delivering a suspenseful remix of the brightly colored original which turns out to be a more than thankful source of inspiration. Recasting the piano in a more dramatic fashion than its predecessor and bundling its beats for bigger impact, this version displays a gratifyingly relentless focus on the floor and engages the listener in an enthralling game of cat-and-mouse between the percussion and its melodic counterparts.

One of the most expressive cuts of IN TECHNICOLOR gets a deserved club update with album collaborator ROOSEVELT's revamp of LES DILETTANTES. Originally a slightly no-wavey narrative sporting the idiosyncratic voicework of MIT's Edi Winarni, the track now pushes back its free-form properties for a heavily disco-infused work-out driven by exquisite hooks and a delibarately jam-like mentality. Edi's singing remains largely unchanged, but reveals unexpected glamour within the new context, making this an appropriately flashy addition to IN TECHNICOLOR REMIXE.

The 12" closes with ZOMBIE IN MIAMI's take on CYCLE, one of IN TECHNICOLOR's most epic renditions: the illustrious duo takes its straight-faced elation and turns it on its head with a blend of sun-bleached guitar licks, heavy-duty beats and a well-dosed serving of peyote-laced synths. The somewhat romantic sensibilities found in the original get a seriously saturnine overhaul, therefore developing a menacing quality that never fails to thrill the unsuspecting crowd. It's a perfect conclusion to an enticingly polymorph collection of reworks that may take to the floor from different angles, but always find their respective ways to the epicenter of the action.

    Release Date // September 23, 2013 (physical & digital)
    Format // 12"

    04. Land Shark - Tie Me Up (PBR Streetgang Dub) [Leftroom Limited | LEFTLTD034]

Leftroom Ltd employ some crafty A&R and licensing skills and are set to re-release Land Shark's classic, 'Tie Me Up', alongside Chicken Lips' original remixes and new versions from Yousef and PBR Streetgang.

Originally released on Coco Machete in 2003 before being snapped up by PIAS and augmented with remixes from Andy Meecham and Dean Meredith aka Chicken Lips, 'Tie Me Up' quickly became an underground hit. A long time fan of the originals and Chicken Lips Remixes, Leftroom's A&R Matt Tolfrey has spent the past few years securing a license for the release. As well as the unmistakable spoken vocal heavyweight house of the original, dub and instrumental counterparts, we're treated to new versions from Yousef and PBR Streetgang.

Yousef's 'Circus Rework' is a typically dance-floor focused version with squelching bass and weighty percussive cues from the original. PBR Streetgang turn in two versions which both roll out arpeggiated bass-lines, loose electro-disco percussion and an epic feel, with the remix version including sinister vocal input and the dub focusing on the analogue synths. Both of Chicken Lips outstanding versions are also included on the package and, as you'd expect with CL, both still stand up ten years on as well as they did when they were recorded.

    07. Mr. C - The Future (Omid 16B Dub Remix) [Superfreq | SFD008]

Mr.C is back on his own Superfreq label with ‘The Future’, one of the key cuts from his recent album ’Smell the Coffee’. The track is inspired by “seeing so many people on the party scene who don’t get involved and do nothing about what is going on around the world” or “the pathetic apathetic” as Mr.C calls them. It’s a typically deep and spiritual backstory and makes for a fantastic single that is lead up by some killer remixes from Omid 16B, Derek Marin and Stark.

‘The Future’ in instrumental form as provided here by Mr.C is a slow-burning groover with gorgeous cowbells, a growling bottom end and some nicely slapped hats that help drive things along. It’s darkened house, alive with impish synths and is re-worked beautifully by the selected remixers who totally re-imagine it in their own unique way.

First up is Omid 16B, boss of the Alola label and someone who has released exciting and unpredictable music on labels like Tsuba, Bedrock and SexOnWax. His remix is more spangled and physical than the original, featuring plenty of ghoulish voices and hard hitting drums that work themselves and listeners into a deep, controlled and Detroit inspired frenzy. There’s also a dub version for the even more abstract dancefloors out there that is just as essential.

Next up, esteemed New York man and Get Physical associate Derek Marin (who has also performed and collaborated with some of the biggest artists in the electronic music world like Andrew Fletcher of Depeche Mode, Mr. C and Alexi Delano) has delivered a hugely ambitious remix that sways down lo in house music’s mysterious and cosmic-tinged nether regions. As well as some carefully crafted percussive drama, there are some exquisite and wide screen synth patterns on show that help to elevate this way above the norm. From dark to deep and back again, it’s a veritable sonic trip.

Finally, the ever on point Stark who turns in a broody and industrial tinged remix that gurgles with thick synth lines and spits out raw snare drums with plenty of attitude.

This is another stunning off-kilter EP from Superfreq that, true to the label’s name, will appeal to the freakiest of house fans out there.

    08. Dominik Eulberg - Kleines Mausohr (Chiroptera EP) [Traum Schallplatten | Traum V167]

The ambassador of the bat, yes it is true, and the ambassador of German melodic techno music Dominik Eulberg is releasing, 8 months after „Ein Stuckchen Urstoff“, a new EP on Traum.

Fans of his music can anticipate another masterpiece of melodic music, which is based on him fiddling with sounds, acoustics… keeping up of what we refer to as the ‚Eulbergsche’ language.

This time it seems to be even more exhilarated and driven by passion. Does this make sense when you speak about someone who is considered to have great compositional skill? Yes we think the liveliness shows up in greater chunks, and the crispiness of the ideas rise to a point which is exceptional and... for those who seek techno realism… it can be found here as well.

There are very few tech artists in comparison worldwide who have made their hobby influence their musical career to such an extent. This concerns his almost scientistic approach to music, his patience and his belief that only things that have become accepted (after 1000 listening sessions of his) are worth to be released.

Eulberg has recently devoted a part of his life to the small creature "bat. These get killed by hundreds every week by electricity generating eco friendly windmills... not only in the Westerwald. So it was time to give these nice little creatures a home with this release.

The new EP does not want to put out a message criticising these new ways of generating electricity while destroying wildlife, but as always Eulberg is poking positively at nature and shows its variety through a complex composition of dazzling colors and an interaction of great diverse melodies.

The "Schokoladen Fruchtzwerg" (eng. Chocolate Fruitmidgit) is a choreographic masterpiece of a track and as someone said, it is a true piece of Eulberg.
The track starts with an amazing 2 minute long intro hat includes a lot of glitch sounds and a firework of rhythm elements being gunned out… all seemingly being the result of a free association. This passage builds up tension to a simmering... keeping it all alive but anticipates the coming change.

After the intro the track bursts in to what tends out to be a "tour de force" of complex melody passages and changing rhythm patterns. Eulberg combines here elements from electronic, techno and house that captivates the listener beyond the dance floors as well as the ambitious DJ. It is the genius in Dominik Eulberg which makes it possible that a complex composition such as this, seems so natural... seems almost played live.

The flow of "Schokoladen Fruchtzwerg" shows this goes way beyond the DJ culture as we know it. On the other side it is not resulting in an obscurity but to the opposite... is still accessible and hugely enjoyable.

The cinematic 3-D feel of the recording and its superb quality connect to his highly appraised track "Offenbach" which was released on his last EP. The "Schokoladen Fruchtzwerg" is an example for futuristic quality techno music in 2013.

Das Kleine Mausohr (eng. the mouse eared bat-Myotis or the little mouse ear) refers according to its name to a small bat, nevertheless is the second largest bat of its group... it is extremely mobile and extremely good at flying low.

So it does not surprise that Eulberg here creates melodies that move with the speed of light, while these melodies entwine around each other in a cannibalistic fashion but never end up in any kind of acoustic stranglehold, instead celebrate their wealth and richness. The track starts with building up quite a lot of energy from the beginning. It pulls you into it. Somehow that energy is condensed and accumulated before it all is channeled into a great break full of joy and emotions. A unique break that is quite independent from the previous sounds, is very much on its own and mangoes to attract good energy.

In contrast to the a-side track "Schokoladen Fruchtzwerg" "Das Kleine Mausohr" acts up much more as an techno track that can serve as a perfect "audio illustration" of a rave in a wildlife/nature resort. The track has a highly enthusiastic inner core and it seems whatever happens music wise is carried by it. It seems there is nothing in the world that can stop its direction.

The "Große Hufeisennase" track is written in the tradition of "Metamorphose" from Dominik’s album "Diorama". The track is a result of a private and intimate situation, very much aside of his hectic DJ live. It dedicates itself to no conventions. The track is based on sugary melodies which meet strong beats. Here rhythms and melodies are 100% contrary to each other.

As a bonus on the digital version there will be an ambient version oft he track! This track could be a good one for the people who liked his "Diorama" Album!
