    02. Simian Mobile Disco - Smalahove (Tong Zi Dan EP) [Delicacies | DELI010]

Tong Zi Dan are the Chinese delicacy usually translated as “virgin boy eggs”. Like the tea stained eggs youʼll find in your ramen, these are eggs cracked part way through the boiling process, to let the flavours of the liquid seep through.

All though in the case of Tong Zi Dan, the liquid is the urine of prepubescent boys. Very much like that urine, the burbling pads and uric submerged melodies permeate the cracked surface of the smooth ovoid outer casing of rhythm.

    [Press]

Simian Mobile Disco have unveiled a new single called 'Tong Zi Dan'. The dance duo - James Ford and Jas Shaw - reveal the unusual inspiration for the track in a message on their SoundCloud page. "Tong Zi Dan are the Chinese delicacy usually translated as 'virgin boy eggs'," the message explains.

"Like the tea stained eggs you'll find in your ramen, these are eggs cracked part way through the boiling process, to let the flavours of the liquid seep through. All though (sic) in the case of Tong Zi Dan, the liquid is the urine of prepubescent boys. Very much like that urine, the burbling pads and uric submerged melodies permeate the cracked surface of the smooth ovoid outer casing of rhythm."

'Tong Di Dan' is available to buy on 7" vinyl from today (October 7) backed by a Mike Dehnert remix. A digital release will follow on October 21 adding two additional tracks: 'Escamoles' and 'Smalahove'.

Simian Mobile Disco released their third and most recent album 'Unpatterns' in May of last year (2012). Meanwhile, Simian Mobile Disco's James Ford co-produced the latest Arctic Monkeys album 'AM' alongside Ross Orton. 'AM' came out on September 9 and debuted at Number One on the UK's Official Albums Chart the following Sunday after selling 157,000 copies in its first week of release - a total only beaten this year by Daft Punk's 'Random Access Memories', which sold 165,000 copies in its first seven days on sale in April.

    03. Piemont - Been Around (2013 ADE Collection) [Selador Recordings | SEL006]

Selador is a brand new independent underground dance music label from Dave Seaman & Steve Parry, specialising in underground house to underground Techno, and all of the various flavours in-between.

The 2013 ADE Collection features long established artists like Chris Fortier, Robert Babicz, G-Pal, Piemont and Rob Hes alongside newer names such as SEFF, Han Haak and XY to name just a few.

German duo Piemont has proven itself to be an absolute production powerhouse over the last half decade. Made up of long-time friends Frederic and Chris, the pair first decided to hook up and make music together back in Hamburg (2007) and, since then, have gone on to establish themselves as one of the foremost partnerships in techno. As well as releasing on acclaimed labels like Monika Kruse’s Terminal M, MBF, SKINT and Resopal, Piemont are also masters of their own destiny thanks to the well respected Plumbum and Suchtreflex labels they have run since 2007.

    [Data Transmission Review]

Selador Recordings’ 2013 ADE Collection displays a solid balance by incorporating emerging tech house talent such as Han Haak and SEFF alongside prolific veterans like Robert Babicz and G-Pal. The compilation, a preview of sounds the label will be showcasing at this year’s vibrant five day Amsterdam Dance Event kicking off October 16th, encapsulates the deep house to techno range the Selador label has championed since its April, 2013 launch.

Fade Records boss Chris Fortier kicks things off with the dubby, chopped-up vocal and heavy bass of “Talk about the Music.” The universal elements give the house track a timeless quality and a versatility to work in a variety of sets and styles. Following up their “Raw Symphony” release late last year for Cocoon on the Dots and Pearls II compilation, Danito and Agent! deliver “Sinco Sin” with its sleazy surf guitar riffage and Fatboy-sized filter mayhem.

German duo Piemont has crafted a gem of almost Kollektiv Turmstrasse proportions with their clunky, organic percussion and subtle melodic touches on “Been Around.” It’s a step forward from last month’s “Give It Up” single for the Selador label while SEFF’s “Visions” feels like a more compact, less dangerous B-side to Maxxi Soundsystem’s “Stella’s Way.”

Fresh off of their Sudbeat EP release that included the growling yet emotive “Choices,” Rob Hes and Steve Slight opt for a more restrained approach with the thumping “Shoot.” The duo is enjoying a breakout year and will return to the label in the near future with a release of their own. Swedish newcomer Vrong makes a very impressive debut with “Gimme Sum,” a crushing tribal houser that’s been in Selador boss, Dave Seaman’s sets for months and for good reason.

“Rosegarden” is the latest slice of Babicz-style from the German maestro and continues in the epic spirit of “Remote Kiss.” Patient yet ultimately explosive, a tough low end is taken by force as distorted arcing synths overpower the groove in the break. Expect more from Babicz on Selador in the near future as well.

Releasing a compilation so early is a bold move for any budding label seeking to carve out its musical identity. However, Seaman proves to be successful with the 2013 ADE Collection by curating a cohesive group of quality tracks that reside at a crossroads of tech, deep and techno sounds. Embracing the philosophy of blending rising talent with established artists has led to some pretty inspired results for the Selador label.

    04. Art Department presents Martina Topley Bird feat. Mark Lanegan & Warpaint - Crystalised (Directors Cut Unmarked Dub) [No.19 Music | NO19040]

No19 take a detour into downtempo indie-funk excellence for their surprising but exquisite next release, Art Department presents MartinaTopley Bird Featuring Mark Lanegan & Warpaint Crystalised.

The track is a complete re-imagining of The xxs modern classic of the same name. Here though, it is masterfully re-built from the bottom up with Art Departments trademark production, Warpaints instrumentation and vocals from Martina Topley Bird and celebrated American singer-songwriter Mark Lanegan.

It comes with remixes from French luminary Agoria and close label associates Deniz Kurtel, Dixon, as well as a rework from Frankie Knuckles and Eric Kupper, under their Directors Cut guise.

There are two versions from Directors Cut (Frankie Knuckles & Eric Kupper), the first is a Signature Mix and realigns the track for dance-floor purposes. Its bouncy, airy and lush with gentle-jazz chords that emphasis the sweetness of the original versions vocals from Topley Bird, whilst a dub is also provided.

Former Infine boss and revered French producer Agoria then turns his hand to the track, slowing it down to a beautifully melancholic piece of deep house complete with heart-wrenchingly draped piano chords. Its a sublime remix of an already sublime track and Crosstown Rebels and Wolf + Lamb associate Deniz Kurtel's version is just as special. This version is darker and more roughshod round the edges, as is often Kurtels way: there's great swing in the drums and moody vibes pervade from start to finish, with the vocal nowsounding suitably ominous in the midst of it all.

Finally, there is an exclusive Dixon re-edit of Agoria's remix!

    [Black Plastic Review]

On first listen this new single from Art Department blew my mind. The duo are better known for their dark techno production, and to a certain extent that is audible here, but the main radio edit suggests they could be priming themselves up for some cross-over production action.

This EP is based around a cover version of The xx's beautiful but somewhat over-familiar "Crystalised". Rather than just remix the original though Art Department have some serious talent involved to re-imagine it. The single edit is this re-imagininng in its most original form - a loose and fuzzy track with vocals from Martina Topley Bird and Mark Lanegan.

The vocals feel sultry and bluesy were the originals were nervous and exposed - it sounds like you'd expect The xx to sound once they've played this song on tour for another 25-years, in a good way, like Fleetwood Mac's tense over-familiarity simmering over into the music. Topping it off is some typically moody instrumentation from Warpaint. Something about their sound always feels like it deserves to be heard drenched in the pissing rain with boots full of mud. This is no different. It reeks of bitterness. In a good way.

Alongside this stark reimagining are five dance remixes and following in such footsteps it is inevitable that none of them are quite as exciting... It would have been much more interesting if Art Department had instead included an extended version of that radio edit.

Art Department themselves provide two mixes - a Director's Cut Signature and Director's Cut Unmarked Dub. The former sounds pretty much like you would expect a tech-house version of "Crystalised" to sound - its swirling FX and synthesised take on the original's delicate melody is impressive, yet it still feels a little overly plastic.

The dub is similar but light on vocals, replacing them with a gradual build that combined with the memorable melody will prove a great track to drop into deeper sets.

Additional mixes come from Agoria, Deniz Kurtel and Tone of Arc. Agoria's mix is played slow, with plenty of feeling, bass forming a wall-like barrier against lots of distortion. Kurtel plays it straighter but darker - throbbing bass creating a sinister feel whilst Synths and echo provide a sense of isolation. Finally Tone of Arc's mix is full of eighties electro-swagger, fuzz and clicks combining with robotic bassline to create am industrial feel.

This is an intriguing release - I just can't wait to hear what comes next.

    [Deejay.de]

Art Department Presents Martina Topley Bird Featuring Mark Lanegan & Warpaint - 'Crystalised' is a re-imagining of The xx's modern classic of the same name. The original down-tempo version will be released on digital, featured on the 12' are remixes from Director's Cut aka bona-fide house legend Frankie Knuckles and Eric Kupper, French luminary Agoria and close label associate Deniz Kurtel.

Masterfully re-built from the bottom up with Warpaint's instrumentation and vocals from Martina Topley Bird and celebrated American singer-songwriter Mark Lanegan, the original was then remixed to perfection for the 12'. There are two versions from Directors Cut (Frankie Knuckles & Eric Kupper), the first is an impossible not to love Signature Mix and realigns the track for dance floor purposes. It's bouncy, airy and lush with gentle-jazz chords that emphasis the sweetness of the original version's vocals from Topley Bird. It's sweet and classic house music that will never sound old and is a typically masterful remix from the legend that is Knuckles and comes backed with a dub version.

Former Infine boss and revered French producer Agoria then turns his hand to the track, slowing it down to a beautifully melancholic piece of deep house complete with heart-wrenchingly draped piano chords. It's a sublime remix of an already sublime track that Dixon loved so much he provided his own vocal re-touch of Agoria's epic original. Crosstown Rebels and Wolf + Lamb associate Deniz Kurtel's version is just as special. This version is darker and more roughshod round the edges, as is often Kurtel's way: there's great swing in the drums and moody vibes pervade from start to finish, with the vocal now sounding suitably ominous in the midst of it all.

Martina Topley Bird is arguably best known for providing vocals on trip-hop pioneer Tricky's debut album and Massive Attack's Paradise Circus LP, but has also amassed her own enviable discography thanks to albums like Quixotic. Mark Lanegan of course is an internationally acclaimed alternate rock musician who has worked with everyone from Kurt Cobain to Bomb the Bass, and for more than a decade has been a steady contributor to Queens of the Stone Age, featuring on a number of their albums between 2002 and 2013. Completing this heavyweight collaboration is Warpaint, the LA based indie band that deals in art and psychedelic rock as well as dreamier pop soundscapes.

No19 is a label known for pioneering its own sounds, and this latest genre-blurring single package is sure to prove their most emphatic release yet.

    05. Bo Saris - The Addict (Todd Edwards Remix) [Deram Records | SDRM 3751418]

There's something to be said for a producer's talent when they are known as Daft Punk's secret weapon. If you have any doubts, however, take a listen to legendary beatmaker Todd Edward's latest remix of "The Addict" by Dutch singer/songwriter Bo Saris'. It shouldn't take very long for the remarkable progression of beats and synths to convince you of his pure musical skill. On the very off chance that you still aren't convinced by the 40 second mark, the perfectly timed addition of Saris' extraordinary vocals and soulful lyrics should do the trick. But don't say we didn't warn you: there's no known cure for an addiction to this sexy, electroboogie sound. [Earmilk]

    06. Sam Russo - Wanderer (John Tejada Remix) [Air London | AL012-6]

London-based producer, Sam Russo, drops the 'Wanderer' EP via the Air London imprint this October, backed with a remix from the ever on-point, John Tejada. ... .. Title track 'To The Brink' kicks things off here, and Russo opts for a warbling arpeggiated synth chord as the driving force, running alongside gritty drum samples programmed in a bumpy, off-kilter fashion. Things steadily bloom in this state as the envelope of the arp line subtly blooms, dark, low-end tones are worked in, and the latter stages introduce glitched-outatmospherics, adding a further weight to an already infectious, energetic record. The original mix of 'Wanderer' follows, Russo opts for a more stripped-back, dubbed-out vibe this time. ... Last up to close the release is John Tejada's reshape of 'Wanderer', as with most things Tejada puts his ears to, the interpretation is unique and instilled with a rugged production appeal.

    07. Kry Wolf - Nightmode [Food Music | YUM008]

Food Music chiefs Kry Wolf (Bill Francis and Lewis Darvill) are making a much anticipated homecoming to their label with the ‘Nightmode’ EP – a release of truly epic proportions.

Rapidly becoming recognised as one of the UK’s most exciting underground acts, Kry Wolf have lived up to their reputation with an outstanding flair for production; a distinctively creative and diverse sound that’s been woven through consistently strong releases.

While raising the bar with tracks like ‘Turbosteppa’, the smash tech house cut they co-produced with Claude Von Stroke last year, the duo have also been behind what some say are among the greatest parties ever thrown on the south coast of the UK, promoted through their über brand, Sumo. Alongside Food Music, this label has championed some of the freshest new talent, demonstrating that Kry Wolf they’ve got their ear firmly to the ground.

The Nightmode EP hasn’t been released just yet, but the previews, which have been up on Soundcloud for a couple of weeks now, have been generating quite a stir.

First up on the EP is the title track, ‘Nightmode’, a sub-heavy house cut of the highest order. It’s a weighty, yet refined, deep production that has “future classic” written all over it. Track 2 brings a sophisticated, sassy piano house groover with ‘U Like’, sure to raise a smile and get the dancefloor shaking. Wrapping things up on track 3 is Pedestrian, AKA Jack Sibley, who delivers a tougher, rougher re-work of ‘Nightmode’. The bassline on this one is something else!

In fact, not a lot says “bass” quite as clearly as the release in general. Make sure your speakers are capable of a decent low end if you’re going to have a listen. Menacing and heavy, I can hear these tracks being played at underground warehouse parties already! Brace yourselves – this first-rate EP is due for release on October 20th.
