Re: The Best sound system of all time.
''I need to ask everyone a favor, and the reason why I'm gonna ask this favor is because People in general live in a huge Grey area which I like to call "Oblivious" and that most of you know as politically correct. I am not politically correct, I am gonna tell you the truth whether you like it or not. Believe me its not my arrogance, because I'm sure there are People out there that probably say "Ooh thats because he's Angel and he thinks he's the best"...or because I think I know more than anyone else, thats NOT it at all. its because I am answering your question and the only way I know how to answer it is with the truth. The favor is: I would really appreciate very much if People stop asking me "what do you think about the Sound System?", And as a consolation I will tell you why:
With all the DJs and different request that some of these DJs (Who are clueless when it comes to good sound) make in today's club scene it is virtually impossible to maintain a sound system to the point that it performs amazing all the time. To plug and unplug and switch shit around all the time is not good for any system. Think about it, if you did that to your Car, eventually it would break down, run like crap or not run at all.
If we're going to take a real close look at the rooms in history that have been regarded as "Incredible" sound systems, there are several factors why these rooms are hailed as great sounding rooms: The Paradise Garage, Zanzibar, The original Sound Factory, Twilo and not because I say so but because most people who experienced it would say the Original Stereo system.
Reason 1...There is usually only ONE resident DJ who knows the system and its capabilities and actually plays well recorded material. Not compressed crap.
A perfect example of this is Mr Larry Levan. Larry not only played what is arguably some of the best engineered Dance Music in history but Larry worked very closely with every aspect of his mighty System.
Reason 2...The engineer who installed and maintains the System...Most of these guys did it and there are a hand full of us who still do it for the LOVE, we literally get off when the sound system is exceptional and we want to hear it sound incredible, PERIOD. Of course you have to have the Ears and experience. The engineer talks to the DJ and he or she gives a tweak here and a nudge there and the DJ works closely with them. (you didnt see other people driving Michael Shumacher's F1 Car did you?)
Reason 3...Once in a blue Moon you'll get someone who not only owns the room but pays particular close attention to the Sound. Like a Phil Smith, Michael Brody and I like to think myself. Its just what I choose to do. For me the number one thing in a club is the Sound PERIOD, I mean why else do you think we're there? MUSIC.
Everything else is secondary. There is a huge difference between installing your sound for "business" and installing it cause you say to yourself "This has got to be the best I've ever heard". If there is only 1 red light in the room as long as I have great sound, I dont give a shit about anything else. Again, thats me. Most Club owners are not like that.
Most clubs today are buying into sales pitches and gimmicks instead of listening to people who actually know what great sound is and how to truly execute it. It all depends where you mind frame and philosophies are as an owner. And finally, the main reason that I dont want anyone to ask me my opinion anymore is very simple, MOST people cant handle the truth nor do they really want to hear the truth, but if we're gonna have truth and be honest, like it or not here it goes, there isnt a room in NY today that I can honestly say sounds ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE, can you?''

Re: The Best sound system of all time.
The memories this brings. I remember walking into Twilo for the first time ever, August 28th, 2000. I was in the lounge area looking at the lights going insane on the dancefloor and the bass just tearing the floor under my feet. I decided to walk in and inadvertently ended up below one of the speakers suspended from the ceiling. My heartbeat went haywire and I had to fight to catch my breath for a few seconds. It's incredible what those thumping low frequencies can do to you.
And the rest as they say, is history.Comment

Re: The Best sound system of all time.
Informative article on the matter... didn't realize how much acoustics matter
RA: The esoteric art of great sound
"- "Next time you walk into an empty building, no matter what it is, if you just clap, the time that reverb takes to disappear is the key to how it's going to sound." Cufley's job when getting a room ready for a club night is to try and get rid of as much of the reverb as possible. As Cufley explains, "The first port of call with trying to improve the sound in a building like a warehouse would be heavy theatrical draping. It's one of the thickest things you can put on the wall temporarily. It really helps with the high-mid and high frequencies, and it will stop the clatter and the reverb."
This added reverb not only sounds unpleasant, but it also "tires your brain" over the course of a night's clubbing. Your mind is hardwired—from the hunter-gatherer days—to judge space and time through sound. Reverb bouncing around the space of a building—"secondary reflections" if you want to use the technical term—puts your brain into overdrive as it attempts to unscramble the flood of information it's being sent. "

Check out Josh Wink's set from Gare in Porto, which uses the same sound system as DC10
Megathread Josh Wink : Profound Sounds Thread
Gare Porto:
When it comes to improving the listening experience in a tunnel Void Acoustics had some bright bright ideas for Porto's new club GARE PORTO - owned by the DJ Duo Freshkitos.
GARE features an all-Void system, designed to deliver an exciting, high impact sound throughout the club. The club's main room occupies a 35-metre tunnel, with a ceiling height of 10 metres and just 6 metres wide, with the system incorporating Void's signature design, the triple-horn Air Motion speakers, as well as the Stasys 8 dual 18" horn loaded enclosures. Friday nights alternate between the fast paced sounds of Drum'n'bass and House Music while Saturdays are devoted to Techno Music.
Considered one of the best clubs in Europe and now a favourite of so many artists in many different genres, Gare is the club in Porto where you go for the music and get to experience the alternative culture of the underground scene.
The Sound System:
When it comes to improving the listening experience in a tunnel, Portuguese installer Raul Ribeiro of T2 Produção e Eventos and Void Acoustics had some bright bright ideas for Porto's new club, GARE Club - owned by DJs Freshkitos! GARE Club features an all-Void system, designed to deliver an exciting, high impact sound throughout the club. The club's main room occupies a 35-metre tunnel, with a ceiling height of 10 metres and just 6 metres wide, with the system incorporating Void's signature design, the triple-horn Air Motion speakers, as well as the Stasys 8 dual 18" horn loaded enclosures.
the main room is equipped with 2 x Air Motions, facing the audience, complemented by 3 x Stasys 8s. 2 further Air Motions provide an extra degree of intelligibility at the back, creating a virtual "square" of sound. Extra sub reinforcement is from a fourth Stasys 8 cabinet. The all-Void installation includes 2 of the compact Impulse 4ts for the bar area, which benefits from some sub leakage from the main dance floor area. The VIP room and wine bar are equipped with 2 x B12s and 2 x VSUBs, mimicking the main system set-up but with a lower SPL. A pair of Mycro 8s give the club's trendy entrance lounge a comfortable ambience, with comprehensive intelligibility, bringing guests into the Void sound field from the moment they enter the club. The DJ Booth was built around 2 x Air Tens and 1 x VSUB, in line with the many live acts performing at the Club, providing a powerful sound in a small package. Amplification throughout the installation is from Void's range of Kryo Dual power amps, and the system includes the Livedrive and Digidrive loudspeaker management systems.sigpicSimonR

Re: The Best sound system of all time.
The one at Home in London was pretty special, you could feel the vibrations going through your body. Fabric always made a big deal of theirs, but I never walked away from there thinking wow that system was amazing.Comment
