    Data Transmission - 364 - DJ Red

Well, what a year it has been. From underground artists cracking the mainstream charts to a hectic festival season 2013 was quite the one to remember for electronic music. Rather than look back on the illustrious last 12 months we we thought we’d look forward to the coming year and introduce you to the sounds of someone we think is destined for a big 2014. Step forward DJ Red. Simona Calvani is not what you’d call a prolific producer, notching up few releases that would be overselling themselves if you called them a scattering. Still, quality over quantity is always a fine ethic to live life by, with the years spent honing a sound over an eleven year residency at Rome’s Goa club resulting in a scratchy subdued motif, the telltale sign of a producer who understands DJ sets as a whole nights progression and not just a sequence of hour long pummeling’s. Her latest release Calvani’s on Ellen Allien’s BPitch Control Eyes Are Blind is case in point, although it would easily find a home on the likes of the avant garde Stroboscopic Artefacts with its offering of three static infused pieces of techno. Each track hovers around the periphery of your hearing, like a giant steelworks machine being heard through a great distance and many walls. DJ Red then delivers techno for lovers of a greyscale spectrum, far removed from jugular main room fare and a reliance on chantalong hooks. Subtle, sometimes discordant, DJ Red’s selections will not so much as ring out over the darkest techno dancefloors, but much like her career in 2013 linger over the top like a dark and threatening cloud as an obvious threat of storms to come. Roll on 2014!
