    01. Speaking Minds - The Lost Dramatic Arp (Amnesia EP) [My Favorite Robot Records | MFR091]

This new EP from Speaking Minds is a debut release that marks the start of what will surely be a great journey for the Italian trio. It comes backed with remixes by MEXA’s Louie Fresco and former Footprintz man Clarian. The Speaking Minds project was born in 2012 from the union of 3 Italian guys with a common passion for music who have appeared on Noir Music, have remixed Superhero and have had support from the likes of Tale of Us.

Opener ‘The Lost Dramatic Arp’ shows plenty of musicality from the off. It’s filled with rippling, lush piano lines and synth chords and has gently underlapping, warm house beats lazily tumbling below in inviting fashion. More searching and skyward melody patterns unfold throughout, forever folding you deeper into the emotive world within. Louie Fresco’s remix retools the track for the dancefloor, speeding up the pace and laying in some more direct and rubbery synth lines whilst retaining the melodic colour and sense of scale of the original.

The other superb original is ‘Amnesia’, a deep and involving house come techno track that is marbled with killer synth lines all treated in various ways – some are loose and liquid, some stiff and strained, but together they make for engaging listening that comes tinged with more than a hint of heavenly emotion. Clarian, who is fast making a name for himself as a solo artist, remixes this one into a tightly coiled, dark and bubbling number that lives in the shadowy underworld. Space ships appear to fly by, leaving trails in their wake, but the minimal groove is never lost and keeps pulsing from start to finish.

Now that the word about Speaking Minds is out there they are likely to go on to become one of the most successful acts of 2014 – once again thanks to some fine A&Ring from the MFR crew.

    Bio

Speaking Minds project was born is 2012 from the union of 3 italian guys with common passion for music. Coming from different worlds (both piano's conservatory and DJing/clubbing) they decided to team up all together to find the most proper way to express their ideas and skills.

Their rise seems that will be very fast, counting on the support of DJs such as Tale Of Us, Mathew Jonson, Guy Gerber, My Favorite Robot, Mano Le Tough and Dyed Soundorom (just to name a few) for their production, mostly focused on deep, techno and electronic.

Their debut track was a remix for their friends SUPERHERO (Leon and Toky) released in the 5 Years Compilation of well acclaimed Noir Music, receiving great supports and likes from almost all the djs behind the scene.

Now, on January 2014, is finally coming their debut solo EP on the popular Canadian label My Favorite Robot Records, that will includes remixes from Footprintz's Clarian and Mexican star Louie Fresco.

Others EPs are on the way, such as the one for Italian Manocalda, owned by legendary DJs Pastaboys that will includes also a great Ultrasone's Igor Vicente remix.

    02. The Black 80s - Move On (Kollektiv Turmstrasse Remix) [Freerange | FR188]

Philadelphia native Hollis P Monroe is a man who has been slowly and steadily building a respectable catalogue of music since his debut on Canadian label Stickman in 1997. Appearances on Josh Wink’s Ovum and the legendary West End label have all helped establish Hollis as a talented writer, producer, vocalist and DJ having recently been drafted in for collaborations with the likes of KiNK, Trickski and Rampa. Here we find him producing under his new moniker The Black 80s in collaboration with Frank Julien, and following hot on the heels of a killer release for Compost Black Label.

For their Freerange debut The Black 80s have created an expansive slice of deep, electronic house on Move On. The expertly crafted minimal production really highlights the warmth of the song and creates space for the vocal to shine. Tried and tested by Jimpster from South Africa to Berlin, this is a standout track with that perfect balance of raw simplicity for the dance-floor and depth for longevity.

On the Overnight Mix of Move On things tread in a more experimental, leftfield direction with filtering breaks and layers of dust and noise creating an abstract and edgy backing, complimenting the sweetness of the vocal perfectly.

Finally, we have Kollektiv Turmstrasse providing their own inimitable spin on their remix, fattening up the beats and adding more drive which builds perfectly to the breakdown where we’re introduced to an echoing bass-line and finally, the full vocal.

    03. Riva Starr feat. Rssll - Detox Blues (H.O.S.H. Remix) (Deep In Hand Remix EP) [Snatch! Records | SNATCH045]

Following the summer release of Riva Starr's sophomore album "Hand in Hand", we follow up with 4 EPs of slammin' remixes courtesy of some of the hottest names in the circuit. The first instalment "Tech in Hand" got huge support and featured remixes by Technasia, Coyu, Carlo Lio and Nathan Barato, while for the 2nd EP - Deep in Hand - reworking of title track "Detox Blues" by Dyinamic man H.O.S.H., with his unique and smooth deep touch, to follow with Italian duo NiCe7 remixing "In The Morning", with a wise use of the melodic samples bringing the original to a new dimension, to end up with "We Got This Ting" remixed by house master Jesse Rose with a full vocal mix. Perfect tools for the dance-floor, out on Snatch! Records.

    04. Ellen Allien & Thomas Muller - Free Nation (Ellen Allien Edit) [BPitch Control | BPC282]

Could Ellen Allien and Thomas Muller be crowned the new dream team of tech-house?

In all modesty – with their current collaboration and the resulting 12" Free Nation the two long-standing label colleagues have delivered four absolutely killer tracks. The basic framework initially came about in Ellen's living room. Ultimately the tracks were completed independently of one another in Berlin and Thomas' previous home city of Paris.

It is remarkable how a common starting point can lead to such different results: the Grande Dame of tech-house has her puppets dancing with no inhibitions as she mixes freaky noises with deliciously overdriven Roland SH-101 synth lines in “Free Nation” and Jupiter 6 synth lines in Delta Zoo before launching an all-out assault on the ears with an explosive mixture of straight-up, bone-dry, old-school beats. This creates a sumptuous retro-techy sound that still throbs with the energy of the present day.

Thomas also takes a very punchy approach to his edits of Free Nation and Delta Zoo. Contrary to Ellen, however, he often leaves space between the straight-up, bone-dry beats for trippy atmospherics and subtly dispersed house elements. These lend his tracks a certain laid-back elegance, but without diminishing their raw power in the slightest – without doubt four genuine floor-fillers and an extremely promising artist liaison!

Written and produced by Ellen Allien &Thomas Muller 2013 in Berlin and Paris Vocals by Ellen Allien. Ellen Allien edits by Ellen Allien + co produced by Skinnerbox. Free Nation will be released on Vinyl with additional Edits.

    [Exclaim Review]

Orchestra of Bubbles, Ellen Allien's 2006 collaboration with Apparat, helped the German producer stretch out her steely microhouse sound. On Free Nation, Allien again experiments with her craft, teaming up with Parisian laptopist Thomas Muller. Not quite a proper collab, Free Nation consists of four edits taken from a pair of pre-assembled skeleton beats.

Allien's edit of "Free Nation" works from a Grace Jones/Mute Records-influenced leitmotif, as her hypnotic vocal-snippets hum bold, while Muller's propulsive rhythm-heavy edit comes off more glitch than glam. On "Delta Zoo," Muller flirts with British dubstep and American neo-soul, while Allien transforms the song into a digestible, '90s-style electronic jam.

Far from an essential release, due to its arbitrary novelty factor, Free Nation is nonetheless a great musical exercise designed to help traffic these two prolific artists out from their respective comfort zones.

    05. Andreas Henneberg - Bansir (5ünf Compilation) [Ideal Audio | ideal29-2]

It is now five proud years since Oliver Huntemann, together with his long-term business partner Jan Langer, founded Ideal Audio. To celebrate the occasion, the label is heading out on a worldwide tour from September on, and is releasing a double CD compilation of brand-new exclusive material alongside the most memorable classics from the label’s roster.

Since 2008 and release 001 from Oliver Huntemann & Dubfire, the label has grown into one of the foremost techno outlets in the world, with a wide and deep fan-base stretching all across the globe. Ideal Audio has also spawned countless label parties, fruitful collaborations and many EP, LP and mix compilation releases from plenty of exciting talents.

“Here we are, five years richer in experience and still as loud as ever” says Oliver on the anniversary. “Some new and promising acts in the form of dub-speeka from Bristol, Remain & Electric Rescue from Paris, and Soel & Jonni Darkko from Rome have recently joined the ranks, breathing new life into Ideal. For me personally, it is still a great pleasure to work on and with electronic music and the crazy party circus every day. I look forward to the next five years!”

The worldwide 5ünf Tour, running from September 2013 until March 2014, features key label associates Oliver Huntemann, André Winter, dubspeeka, Joran Van Pol, Remain & Electric Rescue, Andreas Henneberg, The Glitz and more, details will be announced in the coming days.

And so to the 5ünf compilation: Across two discs and 25 tracks it showcases the Ideal Audio style, which in the past has been described as "dark, hypnotic and powerful..." The compilation spans the last five years – with new and exclusive cuts on disc 1, and classics on disc 2 - and proves that Oliver and Jan have done a great job evolving the label whilst always staying true to their roots in exciting techno. A fine retrospective at the same time as being focussed on the next five years, the 5ünf Tour and Compilation prove Ideal Audio to be one of the most assured labels of our time.

    06. Shlomi Aber - Outlaws (Blossom EP) [Be As One Imprint | BAO 044]

For the last release of 2013 Be As One has kept a very unique collaboration under wrap between two great friends and producers, Shlomi Aber and Guti. The result of this encounter is 'Blossom", a track where drums and basslines smoothly fuse together creating a funk swing on a tech roll, it's deep, chunky and steady. On the flip side Aber goes solo with 'Outlaws", a straight up percussive techno affair, with an outstanding rolling bass and uplifting percussions. The right dose of 'Techno House' as you would expect from Shlomi's signature.

    07. The Japanese Popstars feat. Green Velvet - Matter Of Time (Coyu Remix) [Bedrock Records | BEDTJP01D3]
    08. The Japanese Popstars - Vision [Bedrock Records | BEDTJP01D3]

HARDER... DARKER... STRONGER... was the tag-line and “Disconnect/Reconnect”, the third studio album from The Japanese Popstars, garnered plenty of critical praise and won the hearts and minds of many forward-thinking music fans throughout 2013, proving to be a big success for John Digweed’s Bedrock label. So fittingly, it falls to Gary Curran and Gareth Donoghue to kick-off the 2014 release schedule with a timely revisit to three of the album’s boldest tracks, with superb heavy-duty remixes from London based Sharooz and Barcelona’s Coyu.

The mighty and melodic “Vision” and insanely noisy “Heavy Hitter” battle it out to see who can become Techno champion of the world, a duel that can only result in them both sharing the podium, being so distinctly different in attitude and being unforgettably memorable. It was the original version of “Matter Of Time” (featuring Green Velvet on vocals) that took the 2012 IMS by storm, catching the ears of Laurent Garnier, Francois K, Carl Cox and John Digweed, who promptly signed TJP to Bedrock. Now, for 2014, it reappears with a suitably massive Coyu Remix. With his Suara label currently one of the most prominent imprints in the world of Techno, Coyu’s pedigree is of the highest order and he stands as one of the most charted artists in Resident Advisor's history. Sharooz (owner of La Bombe), whose recent tracks on GND Records have been flying high, is no slouch either! His decidedly twisted remix of “Heavy Hitter” is impressive in the extreme and will no doubt be causing chaos everywhere it lands.

There can be no doubt, that this next salvo from The Japanese Popstars is destined to be heard in the dirtiest of dark rooms and at the biggest nocturnal festival shows worldwide, throughout 2014 and beyond. These boys are on fire and have their gaze fixed firmly on the future.

Both files up. Diggers off to a str0ng start, the Turmstrasse remix is excellent and got dropped at fabric, plus the Vision track from Japanese Popstars sounds great.

Guest Mix is some quality house with a fantastic new Chymera track to finish.
