01. Huxley & Sam Russo - Don't Undastand [Leftroom Records | LEFT043]
Leftroom Records kicks off 2014 with a remix EP for Huxley & Sam Russo’s, ‘Don’t Undastand’ which sees label boss Matt Tolfrey deliver a remix while Chicago-born Honey Dijon supplies a ‘NYC Mix’ alongside a ‘Chi-town Boogie Mix’.
Huxley & Sam Russo, ‘Don’t Undastand’, starts off proceedings with serene piano chords building into intoxicating rhythms and catchy, enveloping melodies arranged over a silky echoing vocal.
Matt chops things up for his ‘Don’t Undastand EC1 Mix’ with broken drum patterns and whirring atmospherics, holding the soulful vocal back until the latter stages of the track to absorbing effect.
Fresh from a stand out compilation for Classic Records Miss Honey Dijon gets straight into after hours therapy with her ‘NYC Mix’ – a punchy, energy driven track with submersed resonances while her ‘Chi-town Boogie Mix’ is a much deeper, warmer and bass driven affair.

[Techno Kittens]
As collaborations go, this is one to get excited about. The combined talents of Huxley and Sam Russo have resulted in a tasty release on Matt Tolfrey’s Leftroom Records imprint.
‘Don’t Undastand’ is a remix EP, featuring remixes from Matt Tolfrey and two from Chicago born Miss Honey Dijon. The original track begins with a jumping house vibe that develops into a darker, electronic sound with a persisting and soulful vocal hook. Matt Tolfrey’s remix is an atmospheric take on the original with a choppy, distorted feel to it.
It’s Miss Honey Dijon’s ‘NYC Remix’ that sticks out for us though. It’s packed with energy and there’s an acid feel to the melody which drives though the track. The ‘Chi-town Boogie Mix’ is pumping with energy and the throbbing synth brings a warm feel to the cut.
It’s a cracking EP and marks a strong start to 2014 from Huxley & Sam Russo.
02. Janmario - Schizophrenik State (Christian Hawk & Timid Boy Remix) [High Definition Records | HD055]

03. Leon & Toky aka Superhero - Darkness Of Change (Paolo Rocco's Late Morning Dub) [Saved Records | SAVED100]
Nic Fanciulli’s Saved label (run with brother Mark) will celebrate its 100th release with a special commemorative compilation album.
Saved 100 taps into the most recent phase of the label’s nine-year history (it first opened for business in December 2004) including cuts by Mark Broom, Steve Mac, Gary Beck, Philip Bader and Subb-An whilst adding unreleased material by fellow Saved favourites Terrence Parker (Song Bird) and Robert Dietz (Anger Management). There are further outings for relative newcomers Tom Trago (remixing Julien Chaptal) and Paolo Rocco (remixing Leon & Toky), as well as both Fanciullis.
Saved 100 will be released digitally and as a series of limited vinyl packs on March 10. Prior to that, the Fanciullis play several international tour dates in promotional support – January 24 (Snafu, Aberdeen) through to February 28 (Sound, Hollywood, Los Angeles).
04. Philogresz - Mooder [Bedrock Digital | Beddigi43]
Bedrock welcome Dutch artist Philogresz to the family with his latest track 'Mooder'.
The productions of Ilker Soylu have been described as "channeling unexpected sudden deep space or possibly even beyond that", and when listening to Mooder you can empathise with this quote as the listener is gently drawn in by his melodic synth line and warm, pulsing bass. The clever hammer shots that evolve into robotic bird song add to the draw as Philogresz casually builds with piercing but never painful chords. Pain is the last thing we feel here as Mooder's constantly evolving composition sees that we are enveloped by the music. Smooth, steady and uplifting.
Mooder is released as a single track download on February 3rd 2014.
05. Saint Etienne - When I Was 17 (People Get Real Dub) [Join Our Club Records | Free Download]

[Bio]
Since the former school friends became PEOPLE GET REAL, the duo have steadily gained a reputation amongst dance music’s cognoscenti. Their residencies at both the UK clubbing institution Wax:On and Croatia’s Hideout Festival and the innumerable other dancefloors which they’ve terrorized during the last decade across Europe, has further cemented their notoriety as DJs who understand how the dancefloor works.
While it’s PEOPLE GET REAL’s genuine passion, as well as their distinctly diverse approach to DJing, that has seen them play alongside artists including Seth Troxler, Sven Vath, Erol Alkan, Jamie Jones, Loco Dice, Claude Von Stroke, Simian Mobile Disco, Craig Richards, Tiga and many more, it has more recently been their productions and remixes along with long-time studio collaborator and producer John-Paul Denton that have brought them a new level of respect from some of the biggest names in modern dance music, including Magda, Ivan Smagghe, Optimo, Clement Meyer, Jennifer Cardini, Brodinski, Damian Lazarus and a whole host of other forward thinking DJs and electronic artists.
Over the past 2 years their label “Join Our Club” has gone from strength to strength and has seen them release not only their own work but also music and remixes from John Tejada, It’s a Fine Line, Justin Robertson, Andy Blake, Falko Brocksieper, Tom Ellis, Last Waltz and more..
"PEOPLE GET REAL are up there with the very best DJ talent that the UK has to offer – and the reputation of their Wax:On residency and line-ups speaks for itself. Mixmag receive hundreds of CD’s each week, but years on, it’s PEOPLE GET REAL’s that we keep going back to. From Carl Craig to Depeche Mode, this is as real as you can get right now."
Ralph Moore, Mixmag
"Resident DJ's are the backbone of any great club. Wax:On's PEOPLE GET REAL are just that and more. They understand how a club works, how to build a night, and know their music enough to shame many of the big hitters.” Erol Alkan
06. Minilogue - Nothing Is Lost (The Island Of If EP) [Cocoon Recordings | COR12"112]
Minilogue are known for their bigger than life electronic music adventures! A fact that makes their announcement to-have-a-break even more painful for us and many of their fans!
Yes, you heard right: Markus Henriksson and Sebastian Mullaert decided to put their collaboration aside for an undefined period and focus more on their solo careers from now on. However they are not waving good-bye without a last mega-sign of their former existence and we are proud and happy to be the label of choice to present this e.p.!
"The Island of If" comes with a slightly reduced playtime that manages to stop the clock at 11 minutes and 49 seconds. The sound and the arrangement follows the vibe of their last Cocoon albums. In other words: Minilogue at its best!
"The Island Of It" appears a bit like a scandic winter version of "Knights of The Jaguar" and offers big potential to be one the last hits of 2013 / first hits of 2014. With the ironic title "Nothing is Lost" Markus Henriksson and Sebastian Mullaert are hammering out a breathtaking epic monster that reminds us of the highly acclaimed remix by The Mole of Minilogues "Hispaniola". Everybody who fell in love for Mole's remix back then will hear pure heaven again with this masterpiece.
And despite the epic atmosphere and the impressive length of 14 minutes we are sure "Nothing Is Lost" will also feed the floors of many techno sets. With "What is there to Protect" (digital only) Minilogue do press every button modern electronic music offers. This is not just music - it's a mad trip!
"What is to Protect" is a complete world with soundtrack and audio drama elements. A musical journey that more and more evokes a floor monster the longer it builds up. A 17 minute long synthesis of arts you won't hear anywhere else! Every second of this production should be worth to be heard. And even if the 43 minutes total running long seems to be a bit unusual we feel and think this package is not a single minute too long!
07. John Tejada - We Can We Pretend [Kompakt | KOM 286]
Booting up where he left off with SOMEWHERE (KOMPAKT 264), Kompakt gearhead and modular wizard JOHN TEJADA continues to woo away contemporary crowds on WE CAN PRETEND, a somnambulistic two-tracker that delivers more bang for the buck, but also knows its way around the pressure-sensitive areas of the dance floor.
The LA-based producer and DJ is well-known for his particular flavor of subtle, but muscular techno delivered in a exceptionally polished manner, but it was his last album THE PREDICTING MACHINE (KOMPAKT 267 CD 102) where we saw him delve deeper into analogue modulars than ever before. The result was a certain rawness that translated quite well into JOHN TEJADA's intricate arrangements and gave the producer the necessary edge for reaching a new level in his work.
That can be clearly heard on the title track of WE CAN PRETEND, where springy percussion and simple, yet masterfully sequenced synths prepare the runway lights for KIMI RECOR's sweeping voice. It's a timeless cut overflowing with classic pop appeal - and as such one of the most accomplished songs in JOHN TEJADA's armoury. He follows the opener's catchy bliss with NOW WE'RE HERE, a direct sequel to outstanding spoken word cracker SOMEWHERE. That same urge for an assessment can be found on this one, accurately portrayed by crackling diatribes from MORGAN ALEXANDRE and embedded in deliciously pumping beats.

08. Shoxy & Alexandar Ivkovic - Red Beans [Desolat | DESOLAT X023]
Shoxy and Alexandar Ivkovic are rightly regarded as two of Serbia’s best-kept secrets. For years they have been amongst the finest DJs on the Serbian circuit. With a handful of releases under his belt on labels such as Davide Squillace’s MiniSketch Records, Shoxy already caused stir on dancefloors worldwide, and the time is finally right for the dynamic duo to make their debut on the ‘Red Beans’ EP.
The ‘Red Beans’ EP showcases the duos considerable talents across four wickedly rhythmic house mutations. ‘Red Beans’ is an impressive opener which is characterised by its clever arrangement and off-kilter beat. Seductive soaring synths, a chanting vocal and further deft sounds are added to the mix resulting in a totally engrossing and hypnotic track.
‘Tromotonik’ develops around a more familiar 4/4 framework, with strong bass and hard-hitting percussion captivating the listener from the outset. Additional vocal elements mean that this is a perfect peak time record to keep a crowd moving. ‘Seattle’ is another tightly produced energetic house track. Contagious right until the last note it sees glitchy vocal fragments and warm chords wash over the punchy beat, while “A Tale Of Rhythm” feels like a ride on a rusty swing with a boom box on your shoulder.
Overall then, the ‘Red Beans’ EP, is a refreshingly distinctive and charismatic four-track debut which takes the listener on a twisted journey through expertly crafted underground sounds. The end result is totally engrossing and it’s safe to say that this is one of finest debuts on Desolat in recent times.
First 12” pressing comes on transparent green vinyl.
