Re: Award-winning Actor Philip Seymour Hoffman Found Dead in Manhattan

Feeling better but had no idea how much I'd connected with his characters and performances. He inspired me to become an artist and take a shot at acting too, something I'm still working at (going on 5 yrs). I'll probably never fully get over him leaving the stage like this, but as mentioned, it's his family that are at a loss. His gf's (or ex gf's) sister lives in Orlando. Hoffman came here on multiple occaisions and spoke at our Shakespeare theater, I found this out today. I also had a headshot session the day of his death with an actor that had just finished working with Hoffman in Atlanta on the latest Hunger Games..she had a lot to say about her experience with him, some good, some not, but that's expected.

It was fun while it lasted...

If possible, maybe take a day or weekend and immerse yourself in watching his films. Was he ever on The Actor's Studio? You could watch that also. I'll bet you wish you had seen him in person when he was in your town-- I hate those missed opportunities. But since he inspired you to become an actor, he served his purpose in your life, ya? The more we learn about his last day, the more troubled everyone can see he really was. Or was he just reckless? idk about such things. Sorry again for your loss.

RIP. Shows how little I follow films that I've never heard of him and didn't even recognise his face??
I wonder sometimes about the acting profession and the effect it might have on the mind. Pretending to be people that didn't exist, in stories that didn't happen may take its toll on people and their grasp of reality, who knows?
Combine that state of mind with anything mind altering and and/or the reverence actors receive from the masses and it's possible people end up in a completely different world to the rest of us.
        Peace

So true! I read about Hoffman that when he was acting in his last role live on Broadway, the character he played had deep aspects of self-loathing that Hoffman [I'm confident acted spot on] had some trouble coping with since having to play the role some 8 times a week. I read it took a definite toll on him. Great performances are wonderful, but not worth any "toll" on your well being in my opinion. State of mind is everything and sometimes life can take you to dark, mysterious places that are hard to get up & out of. RIP P.S.Hoffman!!

I get where Brand is coming from on this issue but I'm not sure if it has any bearings on Hoffman or his death. After all Hoffman was no criminal as such. It seems like he's using Hoffman for his own agenda.

On a tangential note, Aaron Swartz's depression and suicide was a direct result of the miscarriage of copyright law.

Re: Award-winning Actor Philip Seymour Hoffman Found Dead in Manhattan

I understand the point that drug users should not be treated as criminals, and it's because of the criminalization of drugs that they're treated so. When I was on Bluelight we were huge proponents of harm minimization.

But what was Brand suggesting then, that Hoffman couldn't get help because as a drug user he would've been treated as a criminal? The criminality of drugs prevented him from seeking help?

I'm not trying to be contrary, just trying to get a clearer understanding. I thought there're rehab or help options. Brand said as much:

I could have passed on to her the solution that was freely given to me. Don't pick up a drink or drug, one day at a time. It sounds so simple. It actually is simple but it isn't easy: it requires incredible support and fastidious structuring. Not to mention that the whole infrastructure of abstinence based recovery is shrouded in necessary secrecy. There are support fellowships that are easy to find and open to anyone who needs them but they eschew promotion of any kind in order to preserve the purity of their purpose, which is for people with alcoholism and addiction to help one another stay clean and sober.
Was it the fear of criminalization that isolated Hoffman and lead to the OD?

Hard to imagine the high is such a relief that you'd neglect your kids or risk your life for it. What he's saying is that it's more than "filling a hole" or a coping strategy for "negative data" in one's life, it chases after you in a way that mere willpower or self restraint is often futile?

So drug addicts shouldn't be held accountable for taking drugs now?

                              Same with smokers?

It was fun while it lasted...

It's so complicated. I've seen two documentaries on the war on drugs and its failure. The stance is that it's an illness and drug users should be treated as such, like depression, etc, who require help.

Criminalization doesn't help at all because whoever gets caught gets fed into the system, and prison time doesn't help.

It's further complicated by the privatization of prisons, low-level corner drug dealers getting picked up and feeding the privatized machine, cops having to meet arrest quotas ...

I'm just not seeing how the criminalization of drugs lead to Hoffman's death as Brand said.
