Mine was my uncle's setup: He had one of those suction cup things that you would put a phone receiver onto, and dial in and somehow connect to a BBS. I had no idea how it actually went online.
At uni in the labs I discovered Mosaic, Eudora Mail, IRC, and IrfanView.
And then my own modems from U.S. Robotics! It would take me a few days to download a mix or mp3 off FTP on dial-up
Even on dial-up I was already setting up my own always-on connections before ADSL and cable.
