    Random Question about Dogs

So my neighbor who moved in about 6 months ago into the house across the street is rarely home much, but when she is, she occasionally lets her 3 dogs out back via the side of the house. I work from home so I am well aware of the frequency of this, or lack there of. More to the point though, she is rarely home, works long hours (nurse) and her dogs - 2 Great Danes and 1 medium sized dog (not sure of breed) are basically always just inside. The house is probably 1000 soft.

Which leads me to my question. She never walks these dogs, ever. I haven't see them walked once. They are large. The house is small. They aren't let out very often, twice a day maybe 3 times.

I don't know a lot about dogs, but I know enough to think that can't be right. But how harmful is it for these large dogs?

It's not a big deal, but something I've wondered since she moved in. Am I blowing things out of proportion?

It was fun while it lasted...

im willing to bet the inside of the house smells like dog shit. she should just give the dogs up but sometimes the options are: that living arrangement or put down in an animal shelter if they cant find a good home.

      Re: Random Question about Dogs

I think the owner thinks that the dogs are going to keep each other entertained and exercising, but really that kind of situation is not very good for two larger dogs like the Great Danes you mentioned.

Depending on the breed, the dogs should be taken out for a walk for about an hour every day - or allowed some high impact exercise like chasing a ball or something to that effect.

We have a Boston Terrier, a pretty small dog and we know that we could have never been able to keep him in our condo when I first moved in with my wife - it was about 800 square feet. A Great Dane needs a lot of room to run around and play, more than what it sounds like you're describing.
Score so far: Owned ZoverTard 8 times - twice in one week! Twice more in same weekend.

More than six months later - he's still pissed LOL - check the last visitor - guess who the last visitor is on my profile page.

I would never own a dog! I don't like picking up dog shit. I don't want to stand on grass where a dog may have shit. And I don't want to barbecue food in a garden where a dog may have shit at some point. I hate dog owners who don't pick up their dog shit. If I could live on an estate where dogs were banned I would.

Don't get me started on cats!

          Re: Random Question about Dogs

^^^I actually have a sign in my yard that said if your dog shits, pick it up - but says it in a more neighborly way... this one lady down the street used to let her dog run wherever it wanted, so it would come over to our yard and drop deuces. Finally she stopped, but one day she was walking her dog and said "hi" right as her dog started dropping another pile in another neighbors yard (I live on a 4 way cross). And I told the person on my phone to "hold on" and said to the neighbor, I'm going to start calling your dog "pooper" because it's always going to the bathroom. Fucking crazy lady and crazy dog... this lady never picks up her dogs sh*ts either, f*cking ridiculous.

          ----

So I guess I'm overreacting, I thought maybe it was inhumane to never give the dogs any exercise. When they are outside it's only for about 2 minutes... not even 5 minutes. Sometimes she's gone for a few days and will have someone drop by to let them out for a minute. She lives alone too, so the dogs I guess are her only companions really, it's just weird to me. Why have 3 big dogs like that in a small house and never play with them, ever or walk them. She has huge bags of dog food delivered UPS. oh well

It was fun while it lasted...

                Re: Random Question about Dogs

I used to wonder the very same thing about how people can keep large dogs in tiny NYC apartments, and was informed that depending on the breed, some large dogs don't actually move around that much when they're home. They tend to just curl up and settle in. I would imagine Great Danes would need to stretch their legs though, my friend had two and they used to tear up the backyard.

Talking about dogs, I'm absolutely in love with the Samoyed breed:

It's too bad warmer climates will be torture for them.

Suppose you could just confront the lady, and just admit the fact you're just generally concerned.

I didn't quiet get what you meant by just left in the house? Do they have no access at all to the backyard? Possibly the back door has a flap or something?

Right - no access to the outside at all - unless she comes home - which isn't often. She also travels a lot. They go out for 2 mins one or twice a day. They are huge dogs. Since she lives alone - it's just kind of sad.
