Re: Solomun - Global Underground 40: Hamburg

I don't think the MIX cd is dead. Labels like Fabric and Balance...and more recently Digweed Live In....they're still going strong. Frankly I think that GU is better than all of them, despite some bad releases like the 3rd James Lavelle (not that it's actually bad..just not unique at all....and sucking Dubfire's dick), Sharam and Felix. And frankly the Dubfire GU was pretty crappy too.

Someone on this thread really touched on something important....with the access to unreleased music these guys have, they really out to do better track selections. Global UNDERGROUND. Not fucking Global Rebroadcast.

I think it is dead, unless it's an alternative dj (Dixon, Lawrence, Robag) and the tracks are either unreleased or obscure.

^^ Balance is alive and well. And some of the record labels seem to be putting out at least some Cds

Balance's reputation is what keeps the thing going. We can name a few exceptions but that doesn't mean the medium isn't obsolete.

Re: Solomun - Global Underground 40: Hamburg

GU did have a fair number of misfires in the tail end of their releases, partly because the "scene" had moved on and changed and the massive Trance/Progressive House tidal wave had died down, leaving a pretty big vacuum.

They tried to adapt and branch out with releasing mixes by Felix the Housecat, Carl Cox (sorry, I love the guy, but that cd sucked) and others. The better cd's like Sultan's Nubreed didn't offset how disconnected GU felt with the changes going on in dance music at the time.

I was particularly disappointed with the Plump DJ's mix, which was a total disaster. How the fuck do you screw up a breaks cd by two masters of the genre?

does anyone know if they are planning to release a special edition CD set?? I think this mix will certainly deserve one.

So many bad decisions, the should have got Zabiela to do one around 02/03 probably Fancuilli to. Voorn would have been a good contender in recent years. Instead they got DJ's no one carred about.

I kind of thought that Zabiela and Voorn would have been more suited for the Nubreed series - especially Zabiela since he's always been doing his own thing.

Well, I didn't expect too much about this, but is a good comp.
very surprised about it, and the most important, sounds much
much much serious than the last experiments of GU.

Disc one has great tracks on it BUT the mixing is so uninspired in places (just quick blends, tracks not fitting together...) it's disappointing. Could have been a great mix if he had put some more effort into the mixing imo. Have not listened to disc 2 yet.

Agree, some good tracks on it but some mixes
                                between the tracks sounds awful,
seems made it by a rookie.
