There is such a stigma about people who are depressed.....it is ok to reach out & ask for help....having been there, I know it is hard to take that step....we as a society need to change things so it's not so scary to ask for help when you need it.

People comment about how could someone with his fame & $ do something so selfish.....he never chose to feel the pain & despair he was feeling....depression doesn't care if you are rich, poor, pretty, ugly, single, married, etc.....please if you are suffering in silence, reach out to anyone....even me if you must....I will never judge & will lend an ear or shoulder whenever.

Well said Karen, and on a point of how we see depression as a selfish misapprehension: Robin Williams's death: a reminder that suicide and depression are not selfish | Dean Burnett | Science | theguardian.com

And it took a while for me to repeat to this thread as well, all I can say is I didn't really have a serious affection for Williams, seen a few of his stand ups, and obviously the vivid films. from early years, but his loss is a constant reminder of the viscosity of our minds, and the uncontrollable discomfort it leads. I always refer to this paining to somehow try to explain our own inner demons, the black dog.

            thx mate

I know its considered extremely cliche on MS to discuss God, but I have found he helps a lot with the demons. If for no other reason than God has connected me with other humans on a spiritual level that I would haven't had otherwise. But as we like to say in modern times, to each their own.... i guess.

His widow released a statement today that he was also battling early stages of Parkinson's disease, in case someone here hadn't heard:

"No matter what anybody else tells you, words and ideas can change the world. We don't read and write poetry because it's cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. Medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for." -Robin Williams in Dead Poet's Society

                Watch: http://youtu.be/-VUV2Yl8gsI

"That the human spirit is more powerful than any drug. And that is what needs to be nourished. Work, play, friendship, family. These are the things that matter. This is what we've forgotten." -Robin Williams, scene from Awakenings

                Watch:
                https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fKLyhUgAA58

"What's wrong with death, sir? What are we so mortally afraid of? Why can't we treat death with a certain amount of humanity and dignity and decency and, God forbid, maybe even humor. Death is not the enemy, gentlemen. If we're going to fight a disease, let's fight the most terrible of all, indifference. Now, I've sat in your schools and heard people lecture on transference and professional distance. Transference is inevitable, sir. Every human being has an impact on another." -Robin Williams, scene from Patch Adams

"Please don't worry so much. Because in the end, none of us have very long on this Earth. Life is fleeting. And if you're ever distressed, cast your eyes to the summer sky when the stars are strung across the velvety night, and when a shooting star streaks through the blackness, turning night into day, make a wish. Think of me. Make your life spectacular. I know I did." -Robin Williams, scene from Jack

I feel so badly for her, so young to lose her father (& to suicide makes things worse, I think). I can't even fathom how any hurt soul could lash out at her with horrendous photos in her time of loss & grief. Social media can really be inhuman at times like these. I'm glad she quit her FB and Twitter and I hope she gains some peace in keeping her circle rather tight with those she can trust.

I think most people are confused by the symptoms of the illness, believing it's only temporary sadness, general melancholy personality, or something easily remedied by concentrating on others instead of oneself. None of those are actual symptoms. And it is a deadly illness more than most people realize.

It's time we discuss the symptoms of depression more seriously and the steps to take if you see or know someone exhibiting symptoms. Typically, they ask for help in various ways that go unnoticed.

It's important we notice each other more.

I was hospitalized for a few days because of severe depression (due to circumstances & medication I was taking) and it was one of the most positive/life-altering experiences of my entire life. If one single person wants to know what that's like, in case you need help or someone you know might need help, just let me know and I'll write more about that.

My husband & doctor made the decision, not me, because I wasn't capable at that time of making a rational decision for my well being --my mind was in that yes/no, yes/no, yes/no dilemma. "Yes, I need help. No, I can get by. Yes, something is wrong. No, it's all in my mind. Yes, I'm troubled. No trouble, I'm successful in so many ways. Yes, I'm fine. No, most of the time I'm not fine. Yes, I'm strong. No, I'm not weak, only weak people are depressed (lie). Yes, I care. No, I don't care." on & on & on.... stuck in an endless thought loop, meanwhile drained of all energy & motivation for anything.

There are ways out & feeling much, much better.

And people with very strong faiths commit suicide too, they get stuck in loops also. There is a way out.

And yet you are blaming the people around him in the other thread. I don't think she would have been happy reading what you said either. You do realise that anyone can read these and you might be surprised who does.

And as Robin very painfully showed the only way out isn't always the nice one.

Maybe it is time we let he and his family and friends really rest in peace.
