Can't read a single one of them, but signatures are like unique pieces of art, cool in a collection.

      Re: ello

Social media is useful to keep in touch with friends overseas.

What bugs me is that the internet has always been social. Most of us have lived on the internet long enough to remember bulletin boards and forums like this place. These are all social. Difference being usually forums are created around a theme while social media as we call facebook has become very facetious and narcissistic. But as with forums you get what you put into social media.

I got pics and video. But I will upload them in the morning. I need to smoke this nice phat joint and just close my eyes and replay the amazingness in my head.

        ^^ So true Feather.

I rather dislike FB for those very reasons. The newness of Ello is prob appealing, maybe no one I really know is on it, yet.

We need social media ??? You have got be kidding ??? or desperate Social media is one of the reasons people don't talk to each other anymore. And let's face it what people actually present on social media is measured by how others are going to see it so it is rarely truthful.

Being "cool" is not a valid judgement criteria to me. They have investors !! Those investors will want returns . I want to know how they will get them.

Just to be clear I love the internet. It's fabulous , but it has come with a huge price that many are either unaware of or choose to ignore.

            ^^ agreed!! valid points

haven't ignored the price, have compromised like most. by "cool" wasn't judging it, just saying I, myself, feel ok with the terms. You don't, that's your prerogative, don't join. I haven't, but would consider joining.

For me, thus far, the price has not outweighed the gain (based on my limited perception at this time).

^^Why would you want to compromise ?? This is what I really don't get. There are many ares where we do have to compromise . This isn't one. I use the internet to do what I want.

Do you know all the terms?? I would want more answers to pretty valid questions. Although this is all hypothetical really I just don't feel a need to join any social media. I have a pretty full life without it which amazing people I have met through the internet. Music however has had an incredible influence.

The internet makes international communication so much better. For me the forums, bulletin boards were good , people looking for other people and getting together to talk about shared interests. That's good social But Facebook gets a whole lot more, and the world influence of such a narcissistic organisation is frightening. Arab Spring ?? Like that turned out well.

When you think about it Facebook was created by teenagers, for teenagers and the main influence now is teenagers desperate for "likes" There was an excellent 4 corners on this a few months back that showed how this was capitalised on !! Was an great explanation for all that crappy EDM that is out there now

Found a link you can watch on that program. I nearly didn't watch it because I thought "Oh yeah, more on teenagers" But the way Facebook is being monetarised is fascinating.

^^ have the feeling we're not on the same page, mostly because we don't really know each other so I can't answer adequately. They can have my name, they can market to me, I really couldn't care less. No one controls me.

Like you & everyone, I use the internet for what I want. Life should be good, really good, since no one gets out of it alive. I refuse to be fearful. Careful yes -- fearful, angry, blaming, defending, paranoid, no. (not saying you are those, just my own philosophy.)

All the teens I know have long gone off FB in preference of Twitter & Tumbler. FB here is nowadays for older generations, I think. idk... just what I've observed not yet having watched the PBS show about it. Maybe younger teens are flooding FB these days? It's very not-in-vogue for those I know.

idk, idk... ok? I'm sure someone else has better input.

I don't think our different opinions have anything to do with not knowing each other. Saying no one controls you is saying you are unaware of the controls , because we are all controlled to some degree. Even those of us who try to look deeper.

Fear is a natural protective emotion. In fact all, except maybe blaming, all you mention there should be part of a healthy human being in the right percentages . Anger at the the right time is very important , defending even more so. Not rapt in blaming, but there again part of human nature. We will all do it at some time or other. Paranoid ?? What's that saying?? Just because you are paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you"

The thing about anecdotal evidence is that it is not really evidence. Your teenage friends are going against the known statistics on Facebook. They say it is the at the older and more savvy who are more likely to leave.

Maybe get back to us when you have watched the PBS show. It really is very interesting.

BTW They are not just marketing to you , they are marketing YOU. You are the product.

Just to reinforce that BTW, from the ello thing feather posted.

On an ad-driven social network, the advertiser is
the customer and you’re the product that’s bought and sold.
Ello are using it as part of their marketing spiel

You're splitting hairs & while agreeing with your points, choosing to place my energies elsewhere.

Like I said before, have not joined ello and am not really into FB much at all though I do check in daily there. My kids go to a school with 5,000 other kids (no joke, 1 school) and they tell me their perception is that "no one uses FB anymore" in their realm, so I just threw that out to you; take it or leave it.

If someone I really want to connect more with invited me to join ello, I would join rather than miss that opportunity due to fear (or fact) of being a product sold by the company. People & relationships are always more important to me than social media status, marketing companies, profiteers, etc. Sorry if that offends your views against such companies. Just thinking there are instances when I would join if the benefit to my life is greater than the risk of someone making a profit off of me.

Anger is incredibly valuable when pointed in purposeful directions, I agree, and all survival skills have their place; not for me to judge. Today, I choose not to be angry at anyone or anything since this moment is all I'm guaranteed. When I decide to get angry & want to do something useful with my anger, I absolutely will & do, and know you will as well.

besides, who wants ello when we have ms?

Definitely not splitting hairs. There is some very easily verifiable stuff there if you care to look. I put up links I'm quite perturbed that you see it that way. But choosing where you place your energies is something I endorse heartily . Even preach it at times

I find it frustrating that you don't find something wrong if you have to follow someone onto a social media platform to connect???

The facts I have given about these companies is very far from just my view so definitely no offence taken.

                        But whatever, go for it.

Did I say "have to follow?" It's not what I would want, per se. Sometimes that might be a person's only option, to meet them where they are; not ideal choice, but it's a way. Can't define it as wrong or right though.

Instagram and vine is what the kidlets use these days... or else the label that paid these 5 kids collectively $50,000 for posting videos on their instagram and vine of this music video I worked on recently would have been for nothing. but none of them used fb. Even the music group from the video only had 3,000 followers on FB, but tours the world and has a tone of teenage fans.

It was fun while it lasted...
