Islamic law treats the handling of their holy book much more seriously than in Christianity. By Muslim law, desecration of the Quran is punishable by death. If you crap or jerk off on bible, you would obviously offend most any Christian. But if you do so much as put the Quran in the trash, it's a wee bit more serious in an Islamic country.

Add to that that the Muslim population in the middle east is feeling (or is being led to feel) highly persecuted by the US anyways and I can see how it might incite ordinary citizens to take to the streets (especially if they have more extremist elements leading the charge). Not that I agree with the over-the-top reaction here, but I can see why it would inadvertantly ignite something like this - whether it is true or not.

It's far far simpler than that - controversy sells. Good news appeals to some, but something controversial will sell more copies of magazines/newspapers and bring higher ratings (thus more advertising dollars). The mainstream media's political agenda is whatever will make people watch/read them at that particular moment. Which ever administration is in office is always going to be an easy target.

A small black eye for shoddy reporting won't hurt them in the long run.

what I find ironic is that after all the huck and hullabaloo about the USA voting for Bush and everyone yelling that the people of the midwest voted with thier religion, we all hear how we need to accept that these areas are strongly religious and this is how it is.....

double standard. the USA should vote for a bishop in the next election and just point the finger to the middle east if we get crap for brining religion into the government.

That was because as a democracy you and we are supposed to uphold the secular nature of our countries. But even though some of you might consider me a lefty: I do respect the Islam as a religion, just as much as Christianity (to each his/her own truth), but....I will never ever respect religious government, because in that case personal beliefs are forced upon those who have a totally different belief/truth.

Religion should always be a private matter.
