The shakey blurring will happen due to the fact that when you press the shutter down even when the camera is on the tripod you are actually moving the camera while the sensor (digital's equivalent of the shutter) is open. If you dont have a remote you can simply use the self timer for those long exposures - that way you can make sure that your finger wont be on the release and will not move the camera whilst the sensor is open.
DSLR's have a handy little release remote that I use for long night shots.

sorry didnt mention it..... I was refering to taking photos with the remote control and getting blurred images because of the subject moving...

Im assuming youre talking about daylight conditions... You need to make sure youre using a high shutter speed (>650) if you dont want any motion blur - with a low enough ISO (something like 200) and a f stop of about 5.6 should do it. This is for normal daylight conditions...
For night its a totally differnet ballgame. You need a GOOD fillflash to get rid of motion blur with a HIGH f-stop and HIGH ISO if you dont want any motion blur in low light conditions.
fstops (appertures) is the single most important thing to learn in photography.
Read a little about aperture here: (or just google it)

exactly why I know even the little bit that I do.... I just fuck with the settings until the green squares appear in the display confirming the shot is ready to go

anyway, f beat me to it. shoot one object with the M-mode and see what effects you get. That is how i learned. I know my settings by heart to get the desired image i want. took me a while, but i know.
