Fascinating - will give it a read

I considered a Degree in Applied Physics back in the day but snapped out of that carry on and went into the area of mental health instead

so what is this wave thing, while I understand particles, I can't really wrap my head around the wave phenomenon (the wikipedia doesn't help that much, the language is a bit too technical for me)

but is it like time and space correlation?

whenever I think of energy I imagine a flock of microscopic charged particles, but looks like it has more to do with movement than the mass, am I on the right path here?

the best way to think of this shit, in my opinion, is that things like light are neither particles or waves. They are something else entirely that can only really be described by quantum mechanical equations. Then, when we do an experiment to probe it's properties, what we see depends on the experiment we do. We can see it behave LIKE a particle, or LIKE a wave if we want. We then take our observations and relate it to something on a macroscopic scale that we have really well characterized, i.e. particles (i.e. projectiles like balls, bullets etc.) and waves (e.g. sound waves or waves on the sea).

                              ^^ what he said

Essentially, (if I have understood this right), when not observed (in the simplest way to describe setting up the experiment to see where an electron really is), an electron can actually exist in 2 or more places at the same time. When people read this, they don't think it's such a big deal but you have to realize, it would be similar to saying that when no one is looking, there are two of you sitting and reading this. The electron is a wave of potentiality in that it exists in multiple places at the same time.

But when the observation is setup to detect where the electron really is, you find that this wave of potentials (i.e. potential places where the electron could be) suddenly collapses and it ends up being exactly in one spot. But even then, you won't know where that spot is, until the electron were to collide with a detector and leave its imprint.

That's why quantum mechanics is so confusing because it could be anywhere to begin with and even when it's only in one spot, you can never determine where it will end up until you actually observe it there.

This is light years away from classical physics because even if you are blindfolded and you throw a baseball with a certain speed, you don't need to look at the baseball to detect where it will land. You can accurately calculate it without looking at it.

But quantum physics is nothing but probabilities. It will "probably" end up here, but no one can accurately say it will.

And this is just one of the mysterious properties of the quantum world.

so there are no actual particles and waves, then what are they? our imagination?
