I see that being a two part problem - the venues and the crowds that attend are often not going to be open to something new, unless it's promoted in that manner. Back in 2000, they were probably expecting Van Helden to drop U Don't Know Me and The Witchdoctor, rather than what he was working on at the time (his Enter the Meatmarket/Sampleslaya album - hip hop oriented instrumentals). Same thing could be said with how Vegas booted DJ Shadow.
Our community can be notoriously insular at times and very closed minded about other genres. You can't treat a crowd that listens exclusively to trance or progressive the same way you would a crowd that listens to breaks, electro, drum and bass or whatever other genre that can be pretty far removed from your core audience. People say that they want something different, but not something too far removed from what we find familiar and in our comfort zone.
