If you don't agree to very harsh , as Zoe said , conditions they remove your work.
well, they have the right to do exactly that, don't you think so? it's their service, their playground, and Zoe is their client

If she signs that 5 year contact she has to put ALL her music on Youtube first !
I wonder why is this important? doesnt she want to put all her music out there for the audience? if I was her fan i would be immensely happy to see all her stuff on youtube, I would become even a bigger fan

anyway, Zoe should just completely quit youtube, that would be the right choice for her, I mean, if she really wants to prove her point
because, if she signs that contract, all her arguments will be insufficient and the google/youtube hydra will win
and, really, every artist that has something against the system should not sign any of those contracts and look for other ways of distribution

      Re: Grooveshark shuts down

It is actually a really hard subject. . No artist wants to lose control of their music. She is not about making a point . She wants to work with Youtube. She has tried very hard to work within the system and she was really good at it. She made a living. !! But then they changed the rules. You are right if she signs it she is screwed . As you also point out Youtube is the biggest and they are using that to bully artists into a situation where they no longer control their own music. One of the worse things is that they could remove the things she puts up , but third parties can still put it up AND monetize it. In other words third parties aside from Youtube make money off her work. Because she would have to give it to them first she wouldn't make money from iTunes sales.

I have just used her mainly as an example because she tried so hard to work with them for a good outcome, and couldn't do it. And it's a lot easier to understand when you are talking about one person rather than the thousands who don't have a voice.

Personally . I do not download mp3 from Youtube. . I do look for tracks on Soundcloud mainly to hear them then I buy from the artists if possible, or Beatport, Juno etc.. I do buy CDs. I don't use any streaming services. I sort of have my own I have so much music I don't have time to listen to it all. And we still have Djs who give us great mixes. If there isn't a download link on Soundcloud I don't bother with it. As I said I have plenty already.

Whoops forgot I have bought some really nice music from Bandcamp. They do the "pay what you like "as well . And they don't spam you

I guess I am a bit old school

      It's been an interesting conversation.

This is where I first heard of her, you can see what I mean about her supporting the industry. But it's all changed now.

Musician Zoe Keating reveals iTunes, Spotify and YouTube payouts for 2013 | Technology | The Guardian

Actually one of Youtube's new rules is that you can't disclose payments.

She is a pretty amazing person. Incredibly creative. !!
