Nah, no serious critic would ever say that. Great creativity, heart in the right place and great song-writing from Kurt.
The revolution only lasted a few years, then Britney Spears and the Backsteet Boys took over.

They changed music in the sense that everyone was trying to emulate the sound that they had made their own - tons of people tried to copy their formula softly sung verses that transitioned into heavy, distortion layered chorus, abstract lyrics and melancholy worldview. They took elements of rock, punk and heavy metal and made it into a genre of it's own - and the markets took this and ran with it.

It helped revitalized rock music and founded the genre of "Alternative" (which, like the marketed term of "Electronica" covered an enormous amount of ground) and put Seattle on the map as far as musical talent to be mined went.

When I was in my late years in high school, that's when Nirvana blew up - but I got a sense that it was a bit of a reaction towards how dominant Hip Hop was in the early 90's and how rock music was being declared dead. Whenever a genre is being declared as being on it's last legs is usually a sign that there's a blind spot towards the artists and musicians that are still believers in the genre and are trying to do something new.

So Radiohead and The Smashing Pumpkins just stole the magic formula from Nirvana.
I have to say that is a bit disappointing.

Please listen to this, it answers your questions: https://soundcloud.com/marcocollins/...sics-bill-reid

They also used many elements of "Pop" along with "Punk" and "Rock" and that hadn't been done before in the States at least, along with Kurt's voice being amazing. They never set out to be big, so when fame came and they genuinely rejected it (not doing interviews, etc) , people became obsessed.

I don't think they were revolutionary. Pop, rock and punk? You're havin a larf.

Re: Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck

ok, I respect everyone opinions. Jane's addiction created alternative music and most people say that Nirvana stole the soft and quite sound from the pixies or sonic youth. I can agree with this some what but not really. I do agree I think they filled a void that was not in music at the time. They created a hybrid of sound no other band was able to do at the time in the 90's You have to remember that at the time hair metal was still popular and cheesy pop music as well. Nirvana brought an edginess back to music by not wanting to be famous and not wanting to be the next big thing. But I think the thing that set Nirvana apart from the other bands was that fact Kurt was a very good song writer and was able to capture a moment. Smells like teen spirit was just one of those songs everyone could relate to at the time. Its kind like Stairway to Heaven. Once you hear the first riff you know what song it is. Its hard to explain unless you seen it happen. I can see how people think they were just another rock band and their were better songs at the time. Kids were ready for a change and Nirvana was at the right spot at the right time. Can't explain it but it just worked. Its kind like the Doors or Hendrix, it was the right music for the time.

Re: Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck

Kurt (and Krist) meant it. That's it.

From the mid to late 80s they loved and played punk.

It's important to note that Nevermind was also the work of Butch Vig and, unfortunately, Geffen Records. It wasn't just a hit. It sold millions. Try and stay yourself when something like that happens to you.

So judging Nirvana and Kurt Cobain by Nevermind (as most people do) is totally unfair.

Cobain's closest friend since childhood (I forget his name) reported this documentary is 90% bs. He also said Kurt would fabricate untrue stories for the media all the time because he disliked doing interviews so much.

I'll see if I can find the article if anyone is interested.
