Re: Book me because I am (visually) HOT

it's called marketing and gimmicks plain and simple. As long as there's a market and an interest to see topless female DJ's, girls like her, Portia Surreal, Tuesdae, etc will be around. I am not against these girls doing it at all cause frankly I don't cater to the meathead market. The people who go see these girls could care less about their "talent" and want to see them for the novelty factor of them playing topless. I will give them credit for being smart enough to market themselves in the way they do even if it makes them look super bimbo.

I've been asked in the past to DJ in a bikini and I refused. I may like to wear sexy clothes but I'm not down to wearing bikinis, lingerie or topless/nude at any of my gigs if that's required of me. There's a time and a place to wear a bikini and inside a club is not one of them!

I hope for their sake when they get older that they can look back and be cool with it.

ariel, i had a thought after i read your post...

i do understand that this is how these women choose to promote themselves. even though i am strongly against it there is obviously a market for it. that being said, the dance music industry is in a serious depression and worthless trashy people who exploit the industry like this are not helping the actually talented musicians and DJs who deserve to get booked and get their records out.

                    Case in point:

last week in minneapolis the Vote for Pedro tour came to our local nightclub. Pedro and Kip from Napoleon Dynamite were there and Pedro played two hours of terrible hard house music all while backspinning and trainwrecking every FUCKING record

this type of gimmicky shit is killing dance music the same way that those strippers who think they are DJs are. don't get me wrong i have seen plenty of female DJs who actually were talented and i have the utmost respect for them. but, when i start getting passed over for gigs because some trashy topless DJ is rolling though town then i just can't show any respect for that at all. there are too many talented male and female DJs who actually deserve to get booked to give these gimmicky artists any of my time, attention, or money.

don't support these gimmicks, if you want to see breasts then have sex with your girlfriend, go to a strip club, or rent a porn

What blows my mind sometimes is that if they only worked on their talent/mixing level as well, the bookings would probably double in some cases...I'd be up for seeing a female topless DJ who actually has talent..alas, I've yet to find one

You can't have manslaughter without laughter.

"Son," he said without preamble, "never trust a man who doesn't drink because he's probably a self-righteous sort, a man who thinks he knows right from wrong all the time. Some of them are good men, but in the name of goodness, they cause most of the suffering in the world. They're the judges, the meddlers. And, son, never trust a man who drinks but refuses to get drunk. They're usually afraid of something deep down inside, either that they're a coward or a fool or mean and violent. You can't trust a man who's afraid of himself. But sometimes, son, you can trust a man who occasionally kneels before a toilet. The chances are that he is learning something about humility and his natural human foolishness, about how to survive himself. It's damned hard for a man to take himself too seriously when he's heaving his guts into a dirty toilet bowl."

hun, I don't care for it either and I agree the best way to stop the gimmicky nonsense is to simply not go to these events. There are "celeb" DJ's who are absolute nonsense too yet unfortunately there's a demand to see them just like there are with the topless girls. If you remember back around 95, Traci Lords had a "techno" album and she was doing DJ gigs around the country. I haven't heard her myself but anyone who ever saw her said she sucked. For people who go to these events to see the celeb DJ, they probably feel they can have a closer connection to them and go regardless of talent level. Do understand that a decent majority of people who go to dance clubs aren't as discriminatory as we are.

The way I look at it is yes it does irk me to see topless girls playing all over the planet but at the same time I can look at myself and know that I got to where I'm at by myself and I did it w/o resorting to gimmicks OR kissing ass.
