03. Damian Lazarus & The Ancient Moons - Vermillion (Deniz Kurtel Remix) [Crosstown Rebels | CRM140]
Pete Tong’s ‘Essential New Tune’ last week, ‘Vermillion’ is the lead single for the forthcoming album from Damian Lazarus & the Ancient Moons. Channeling the magic of those hazy, sunrise parties Vermillion captures the globetrotting influences of Damian Lazarus’s new album.
Transported to glistening new realms, the bubbling deep house rolls beneath the revelatory soul of LA singer-songwriter and guitarist Moses Sumney, is the first of two appearances from the singer on the forthcoming album ‘Message from the Other Side’. Album out May 18th.
Released on 30th of April, ‘Vermillion’ lands with an inter-stellar remix package. French techno connoisseur Agoria leads us on a minimal, spaced out trip through shining synths and swift vocal echoes. Acclaimed house maverick and Hot Creations head honcho Jamie Jones has been closing his DJ sets for the last few weeks with his own remix.
It's bouncing, old school house tip bounding beneath bright gospel turns of phrase, approaching near classic status with arms aloft receptions on the dancefloor. And finally Berlin’s Deniz Kurtel, who pulls her penchant for polyrhythmic percussion to the fore, casting sweet tribal grooves across an original surely destined to become a dancefloor anthem this summer.
A career spent DJing across the globe was the catalyst for Lazarus’s latest project – Damian Lazarus & The Ancient Moons. Co-produced by James Ford of Simian Mobile Disco, the new album brings together an assortment of vocalists, collaborators and players from around the world, all taking inspiration from his Lazpod series, Get Lost events and Day Zero festival in Mexico.

06. Recondite - Think Twice [Life And Death | LAD021DIGITAL]
A long time friend of the label and an artist who needs no introduction, Recondite presents two unique techno narratives for his much anticipated first EP on Life and Death.
Up first and straight out the gate like the turning of the great Boethian wheel, Think Twice turns over and on top of itself again, like the march of time and the fortunes of paupers and princes alike. An ever advancing urgent reminder of the transitory nature of the eternal now, it graces us with her beauty and leaves us with a shaking sensation deep in our bones.
On the B side, Serak begins with a bellowing bass emitted like a series of holotropic breaths from belly of Stanislav Grof himself. A sequence of sounds sent like a fishing line to the depths of the psyche, it returns with a portentous melody that winds and wanders until exploding midway thru the piece in a burst of restrained

08. Johannes Brecht - Nuages [Poker Flat Recordings | PFR159]
Now here's something special. Johannes Brecht returns to Poker Flat with a little night music, a trio of deep, dramatic and driving house tunes that in their precision and invention are testimony to a distinctive intelligence.intelligence.
Since an impressive stint as musical director for Henrik Schwarz's 'Instruments' project and the subsequent release of 2013's 'Holla', Brecht's reputation has been growing steadily with a series of carefully crafted releases. And if 'Trois Nocturnes' is anything to go by, 2015 is set to be his year.
'Nuages' hinges on a sinuous, snake-charming synth line. Instantly memorable, it's an exquisite headphone experience that's equally deadly on the dancefloor.
The lilting 'Sirčnes' teems with ideas, its big kick burnished with a dancing synth motif and a chamber orchestra of synthetic strings.
Last but not least, the motorik 12-minute 'Fętes' contrasts its knotty, brittle piano line with sus-tained pads and bright, striking syncopations.

[decoded magazine review]
Strange Town Recordings have been releasing high quality and forward thinking music since being founded in 2010. They regularly support a lot of talented artists from around their home town of Montreal as well as respected artists from around the globe to put out a string of classy releases.
Wrong Jeremy aka Jeremy Reid is also part of Augustine Wrong along with Florence Masson. They’ve previously released on Strange Town Recordings with the “She Does” EP, in early 2014. They return with fellow Montrealer’s Flowers and Sea Creatures for the Canadian labels 20th release.
The original mix of “Dimly Lit” starts with eerie keys and pads setting the tone and giving an ominous feeling. The haunting vocals from Flowers and Sea Creatures backed up by Augustine Wrong are really beautiful and bring things to life. They brilliantly complement the mood of the track! Bass and chord stabs all add to the dark vibe really well with key changes keeping things interesting. The relentless percussion builds the energy up and carries you along. The break is beautifully deep, dark and eerie with the lamenting vocals working superbly before things kick back in to full swing. A quality piece of melancholic deep house.
Deepfunk provides the remix in his distinctive melodic style. The effected synths of the intro instantly give you a feeling this is going to be big. Chopped up vocal stabs give a feeling of things just about to ignite. Beats patterns fluctuate, teasing you, as things start to build before the fantastic bassline comes in to really give you a lift off. Layers of melody build the atmosphere of the track up beautifully. Always keeping varied and fantastically intense. The vocals are used more sparingly but work to great effect. Sweeping in and out to give a really epic feel as the track progresses. Always fitting the progressive house/melodic techno style really well, Deepfunk aka Malcolm Abdilla from Malta, can always be relied upon to come up with the goods. He does it again with this, a wonderful remix!
We’re not finished there though as we also have a Re-visioned version from the original collaborator’s. Brighter than the original with a more uplifting and dreamy feel. The vocals give you a totally different mood with a much sweeter vibe. This is the happier side. It sounds more confident of a positive end to the story. The analogue bassline is fun and bouncy, keeping you grooving along really nicely. Vintage keys and playful vocal stabs all keep you smiling throughout. A really lovely version.
This is one of Strange Town Recordings strongest releases yet, an excellent EP!
