    The Martian [2015]

I love anything space and this ought to be at least decent.

Also interested to see Ridley Scott's interpretations of sci-fi.

                      Re: The Martian [2015]

Watched a screener of it earlier today and was very impressed. Much like Prometheus, Ridley Scott is fully engaged in telling the story and it doesn't suffer have Damon Lindoff fucking up the screenplay. It has substance as much as it does have a wonderful visual pallet to compliment each other.

I'm currently reading the book, and from what I've read so far, the movie is pretty faithful to the source material, keeping the hard science in place in order to keep the story grounded and the suspense of how he will survive building.

I gotta say though, I'm not crazy about Matt Damon being the central character in the movie, only because I kept thinking about his role in Interstellar - I kept imagining in the film that he'd try to kill the rescue team as soon as they arrive. He's otherwise fine in the role, doing an impressive job of carrying the movie on his own for the most part (that is, when they're not cutting back to earth) - and the rest of the cast is excellent, particularly Jeff Daniels, who's riffing a bit on his character from The Newsroom.

If you liked Interstellar, you'll probably like this - it's a bit more grounded and not as fantastic as Interstellar (meaning that they're not dealing as much with quantum theory, more along the lines of agriculture, time and human necessities of survival on a planet that is not very hospitable to life).

Also - NASA's announcement of water on Mars kind of undermined it a wee bit today - but still, this is a solid movie.

                        Re: The Martian [2015]

i kind of figured there was water on Mars at some point in its life so i am not really surprised about the announcement. i am surprised it took us this long (since the Moon landing) to figure it out though.

looking fw to this movie without a doubt, trailer's look good and i like Damon. pretty good actor in everything he is in. good to see Daniels in another major film too, always thought he was massively underrated.

This^ is why I will see this movie in 5 years, if ever. I loved Interstellar, but rebranding Interstellar? No thanks. It's a cheap move I think... And from what I saw of the previews it looked they used alot of the same aesthetic as Interstellar. Sorry Jeff Daniels, you are no Michael Cain. If it were a continuation of Interstellar, that would be amazing, with all the same characters... I wonder if they were working on these films at the same time? Or simply borrowed the technology and aesthetic?

It was fun while it lasted...

                            Re: The Martian [2015]

The Martian is it's own movie. The similarities are that it involves off world exploration and that's about it. Interstellar was more concerned about black holes, the theory of relativity and some dabbling in string and m theory. It's more theoretical than having hard science to back it up. Kip Thorne advised on the theories used in Interstellar to keep it as close to fact as we know scientifically at this point in time.

The Martian is far less theory and used actual data compiled from NASA and confronts the problems of survival (but placing it in the near future to avoid some of the simpler problems that we would encounter - like the corrosive nature of Mars sand), food supplies and even physics involving the transformation of certain gasses).

The comparison is more because they're so closely timed (and The Martian was already in pre-production when Interstellar was being worked on) and is fairly typical; as soon as a studio catches wind that another studio is doing something new or different - they start to commission scripts or buy scripts that are of a similar nature in order to catch some of the gold rush if there's a lot being put behind it. A good example is how Armageddon and Deep Impact were similar ideas about a meteor threatening earth - but they had two very different approaches in how their stories were told. Another good example is the spy movies that came out in the 90's like Mission: Impossible and True Lies came around after the Bond franchise crashed when License to Kill came out - two spy themed stories with very different approaches. The only reason I mentioned the Matt Damon thing was because he stars in both films - but they are two very vastly different films when you get past the space travel part.

I know it's common - but having Damon in both makes The Martian less interesting to me mostly because I really loved interstellar - I guess I feel oddly loyal to that film.
