Upgrading sound system

I'm upgrading my sound system and could use some help. I have around USD 700 to both receiver and speakers...

I'm not sure whether to get a "combo" or speakers and receiver separately, any ideas?

For receivers I've checked Onkyo, Yamaha and Sony, being Onkyo the best deal so far.

For speakers, infinity and onkyo.. I've also considered the Bose AM 15S but have read many reviews saying that they are too expensive...

Any suggestions will be appreciated

I wouldn't go to a traditional retail store to buy these products...definitely look on the web...

i'm sure eBay has merchants that sell boatloads of quality products with + ratings...

I spent $800 on all the equipment. take out the DVD player and you're at about 600 bucks. The speakers are great, but they do require assembly... very minor soldering

its all a matter of personal opinion about the gear you buy. everyone is biased towards one or the other.
get out there to the retaliers with a couple cd's. play your shit and figure out which sounds best to you.
i doubt this helps but i felt like typing.

The interweb is the place to buy.

In the UK some store have test rooms where you can arrange to test speakers etc with you own CDs.
