I realize that was the draw for many folks (ecstasy was still legal stateside before I was of partying age in the 80s, as I'm sure it was everywhere else), but to me it was always secondary to the music. Think I took maybe 1 inhalation of nitrous at a single party out of too many events to count in the 90s/00s. On a few other occasions where I was feeling more adventurous (and the temptation was literally in my face), I preferred it to be in a more controlled environment among friends. It sucks all around for those who know their limits and are smart about their consumption, but these preventable fatalities happen often enough at similar events unfortunately.
