my trip to rural mainland china

i was lucky enough to go visit my cousin in Yangshuo, China for the past 8 days or so (with LARGE amounts of travel time included). He has been teaching english there for the past several months, and invited me out.

here are a few pics of how truly phenomenal this place is:

the view of the balcony of my cousin's place

what you see when you walk out the appt he is renting...a huge water lilly pond.

a view of the lake and bridge in the centre of town

the main touristy-type street, called 'west street', where you can buy alot of amazing things for next to nothing

a part of the town from a hike we took to moon hill

the reason they call it moon hill...a half moon has been erroded into a huge limestone mountain. me on the right, my cousin on the left

bamboo rafting on the Li river...basically drinking lots of beer in the sun. this guy was great though, even let us try our hand at guiding the raft ourselves...

shot infront of a temple just off the highway near the city

i'll post more pics and add some more commentary about the trip tommorow, if anyone is interested.

              a few more...

making a sidewalk the old fashioned way.

we rented mini-bikes that ran on electricity and had a range of about 40 km. loved them so much we rented them 3 days straight. i gotta say, the first time driving a bike through the INSANE chinese traffic was pretty nerve wracking.

another scenic shot from atop moon hill. it was definitely worth the scorching hot, bug infested, jungle climb we had to make to get up it. i've never sweat so much in my life.

              scene shot of moon hill

a single bamboo raft out near the end of a day on the Li river

this tree is over 500 years old and has supports holding up its ever extending branches...

thats the way to do it, never go to the tourist areas when you go on vacation, go and immerse yourself in the culture and people. when i first went to puerto rico, i stayed with a friend from their and not once did i go to a tourist area outside of gambling, i spent the 2 weeks just chilling with the people, hitting up the jungle and outlying islands etc.

                          the only way to go.

                              Quite.

That really looks like an awesome trip you took there. I agree that taking a vacation to the cultural areas beats the hell out of the tourist areas any day because the people are genuine, and they aren't just toadies trying to take your money.

You can't have manslaughter without laughter.

"Son," he said without preamble, "never trust a man who doesn't drink because he's probably a self-righteous sort, a man who thinks he knows right from wrong all the time. Some of them are good men, but in the name of goodness, they cause most of the suffering in the world. They're the judges, the meddlers. And, son, never trust a man who drinks but refuses to get drunk. They're usually afraid of something deep down inside, either that they're a coward or a fool or mean and violent. You can't trust a man who's afraid of himself. But sometimes, son, you can trust a man who occasionally kneels before a toilet. The chances are that he is learning something about humility and his natural human foolishness, about how to survive himself. It's damned hard for a man to take himself too seriously when he's heaving his guts into a dirty toilet bowl."
