    Re: Goodbye IPOD/IRiver/etc etc...

The ipod will be the basis for content providers when deciding upon which platform to designate as the default format, or in other words, if you havent heard of a company before now, and you have faith that they will beat out apple in the market of portable digital music/a/v devices even though apple already has the hardware out and its no longer even 1st generation on its color photo model, just cause the other company's player does video now.... good luck.... But I think, and this is just me making a very business-like guess... It might be wise to hold out on launching a release and putting the $ into marketing it without a very large database of content that you intend to be able to charge for and not disapoint / discourage potential customers by offering very little selection/lackluster content that might spoil consumer level of interest and excitement, and overall jealousy factor i suppose... It should be like with original Ipod, you saw one and just needed to get one of those things, except mp3's were everywhere already, and the itunes music store was 2 years away at least. And other than music videos, what content will people actually want to watch and/or pay to see on that little screen?

I don't have any kind of MP3 player as yet, but thanks for that Mike - I agree with you on the screen / video thing, don't really see the point in carrying round a little telly.

I was holding out for a very small 40-50 Gb MP3/WMA player, I still think the ones out today are just a little too big.
What if the Hokey Kokey IS what it's all about???

        mike...

i don't care much about the video, and that color screen...

i'd be getting it for one reason...

a small portable seemingly awesome recording device.

i'm not one of those people who walks out of the house and puts earbuds in my dome immediately. i've got a Dell 20gig, and it's cool, but i never use it.

if it recorded, i wouldn't even have posted this message, and i'd be done looking at these things.

Iriver vs. this thing: is what it's boiling down to for me.

Living in NYC and not having a car, i walk nearly everywhere, so ipod on my at all times if I can help it... As for portable recording devices, I have an ibook thats small enough to put in almost any bag and function as a hell of a lor more than any of these devices, and with multiple software recording capabilities and options...

in the end, I never fucking record jack shit anywhere so I dont see that as a big selling point for myself, and if I am out spinning I would defintely be using ableton, or at the very least integrating traktor with CD's and digitally grabbing it all on the powerbook... I guess I just like recording the old fashioned way, digitally with 2 gigs of ram and a 100gig HD through firewire.... Ya know? OLDSKooL

For those who think that the Ipod is just for music... you should go down to your local Mac store and check out those teaching days that they have down there. I went to one. And even though i don't own anything by apple. I checked it out and was very suprised by all the things you can do with your ipod.
Do you know you can download all your e-mail into it and read it while you are out? That's only one thing.
You can apparently also use it for business purposes too.
I was quite suprised at all the things this lady was pointing out.

Now if it would only do line in recording. That way I don't have to have a laptop with me when I wanna record a set. Especially because I don't have a laptop.

"Son," he said without preamble, "never trust a man who doesn't drink because he's probably a self-righteous sort, a man who thinks he knows right from wrong all the time. Some of them are good men, but in the name of goodness, they cause most of the suffering in the world. They're the judges, the meddlers. And, son, never trust a man who drinks but refuses to get drunk. They're usually afraid of something deep down inside, either that they're a coward or a fool or mean and violent. You can't trust a man who's afraid of himself. But sometimes, son, you can trust a man who occasionally kneels before a toilet. The chances are that he is learning something about humility and his natural human foolishness, about how to survive himself. It's damned hard for a man to take himself too seriously when he's heaving his guts into a dirty toilet bowl."

Wow, so like, can you work that magic of yours all the time......? I mean like, can u point out the blatantly obvious for any member who posts, and like in real life u can tell the weather just by going outside and stuff? You have an amazing gift, don't abuse the power that comes with that.... the repercussions could be devastating if you dont respect the responsibility that comes with that power....

I'm gonna go to crobar tonight for mauro picotto cause i got a comp and its an open bar for 2 hours, and the last time I heard him spin it was for 20 minutes at Twilo cause I got kicked out at that point (this was fall 2000 I beileve) and if thats not something to celebrate, then a 5 day birthday weekend fuckin is.... NYC'ers hit me up, I'll probably be hosting some crazy house parties this weekend when not at steve porter i bet.....

I think your partially right but I think things will revolve around standard codecs (MP4, divx etc.) and as long as the lesser known companies support them this should be a non-issue. I think it would be foolish of Apple to not embrace current standards- just look at how Sony faired with their proprietary codec.

Secondly also something common with the smaller companies that apple lacks is the ability to upgrade firmware. I consider this to be a huge advantage for the little guy. IF formats do change they have a good chance of making the switch. That said I do think Apple will remain dominant in the market due to their marketing, but to get the most out of your dollar I'd recommend looking elsewhere. Even if your not planning to use the line in features, tuner (and ability to record it), or video player why would you not get it if the price was the same and it was a quality product?

Yet another reason not to by an Ipod is DRM. Alternate products tend to can be compliant but also offer ways around it. I have yet to see the same from Apple. In the end it comes down to what fits your needs but with so many options out there I can't see why anyone would buy an Ipod- industry standard or not.

After further research I have found that the only FLAC compression levels is supports are 0 (wouldn't that be a .wav :? ), 1 and 2. The highest level is not really all that much smaller than .wav, so those options are all but useless. Who wants to have to reencode their files just to go on their player?? So what started as a sell point ends up being a breaking point. Damn, I wanted to finally get a portable player. Oh well, keep watching and waiting.
