Richie Hawtin
all info taken from: http://www.tigersushi.com/site/frame...amp;ArtBio=yes
Biography
Under his various monikers, Ritchie Hawtin has released some of the most innovative and sharp pieces of electronic music of the nineties be it the hard stomping releases of FUSE or the minimal and yet so expressive experimentalism of Plastikman. Hawtin's taste in electronic music was reportedly triggered by his father's - an engineer at General Electric - extensive listenning to cult seventies pre-tech outfits such as Kraftwerk or Tangerine Dream. Also essential to Hawtin's musical experience was the fact that he resided in Windsor, a Canadian border-town, a stones-throw away from Detroit the electronic meca supreme.
Zoning in and out of the Motor City soon became an habit for Hawtin. He just crossed the border to hunt for some vinyl at Detroit's many speciality shops and soon realised that all the wonderful techno he was listenning to actually came from the Motor City. Again the legacy of techno greats such as Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson or Juan Atkins was an essenatial catalyst, and young Dj Richie Rich began spinning at parties inspired by luminaries such as Jeff Mills who hosted a radio show at the time.
In the early nineties, he cofounded Plus 8 records along with John Aquaviva . The pair combined Aquaviva's studio expertise with Hawtin's ideas and released acid-house classics, quite similar to early Underground Resistance material. The UTK studio - Under The Kitchen (of Hawtin's parents house) - productions soon draw the attention of the Motor City's electronic crowd and a tight competition ensued to determine which crew would rule supreme over the lairs of TB-303 and TR-808 land : Plus 8 or Underground Resistance ? To these days, the Spastik single or the Sheet One LP are still regarded as all time tech classics.
Though his hard, edged-up sound and his acid production work earned him total respect from the electronic community and landed him many spots as a DJ, Hawtin refused to cash in on formulas and was always prone to innovation and novelty. In 1995, Hawtin was caught in a hectic Dj schedule and yearning for more time to be able to take the long view and actually release something different. Though it infuriated him at the time, the United States immigration services gave him the perfect opportunity when banning him from re-entry after busting Hawtin with all his equipement at the border, the man simply didn't have a work permit. The forced break gave him time to reflect on the state of his art while at the same time his competitive drive was fueled by Germany's own miniamlist school of techno : the beautifully evanescent works of Maurizio and his posse ( Chain Reaction and Basic Channel ).
The answer came out in the form of the Concept series of EPs that explored the bare and abstract side of the TB-303 and TR-808 synthetizers. This was later confirmed with the release of the stellar Consumed LP that literaly blew everyone away. Of course, it's become common place to parrallel the current wave of electronic music, and especially Techno, with the apparition of abstract artforms in the end of the19th and beginning of the 20th centuries especially in painting and sculpture. But Consumed did just that, it took the original acid house sounds and arranged them in the most abstract possible way while still retaining an eerie connection to reality. When playing the record to your friends you could hear them go : 'this is the sound of air-conditionning', 'this is the sound of a vacuum cleaner' or 'this is an heartbeat' while in fact it was pure TB-303 programming, clearly reminescent of classic techno and yet utterly different, the sound of abstraction was anchored in our everyday world and for that matter in our trainspotting history and yet it was something else, a pure reconstruction, an abstraction.
Now, famous for his various arty installations, among which the much glossed Simon-inspired installation - Simon is this electronic game where people had to memorize a sequence of sounds associated with a sequence of colors and reproduce it on touchpads- and the Avignon (France) millenium celebration, Hawtin seems to try to preserve an ideal mix between his producing, DJ-ing and arty activities.
