This doesn't necessarily mean that the NYT intends to blast this guy's kids. They are probably looking to see what kinds of representations Roberts made to the adoption agency to see if they can get a sense of where he stands on various issues.

I recognize that the RNC believes that it is the press' responsibility to do nothing but parrot what the talking heads say without comment or analysis, but this would appear to me to be the forgotten art of "investigative journalism." Assuming they are public records, fair game, IMO.

Of course, if they do go after his family, they ought to be drawn & quartered. Attacking the family of a political opponent is outside the lines and just plain wrong, IMO. For more on this point, google "Karl Rove."

Liberal or con, trying to dive so deep into someone's life is despicable IMO. Even public figures have a right to privacy in their lives. That is my opinion tho.
