    The Skeleton Key

This isn't very scary or compelling at all. Films like these tend to take stereotypes and recycle them to death - yes, Southern people are weird, behave strangely, and black people practice lots of voodoo (seems like a madatory bit in any horror film set in the south). Kate Hudson is pretty weak in a role that's more annoying than interesting, playing an ex-nurse with father issues who decides to get into one on one care with the family of a stroke victim (played by John Hurt - Kain from Alien). The twist ending will more than likely induce a head shake than anything that would come close to the reaction of The Sixth Sense when it came to surface.

    Rental.

Steve Lawler remixed the title track, but that was the extent of his involvement, much like he did with Die Another Day.

I wonder what he did. From what I could hear in the soundtrack, there wasn't really much that would come close to being something electronic or close to Lawler's usual signature sound. Maybe the Hoodoo rituals, but I sure as hell didn't hear anything even closely resembling anything that I could recognize as Lawler's work.

DJ and producer Steve Lawler has added another string to his bow, stepping into the Hollywood arena with his remix of the title track of new Universal movie, ?The Skeleton Key?.

The film, starring Kate Hudson, Gena Rowlands, Peter Sarsgaard and John Hurt, written by Ehren Kruger (writer of The Ring) and directed by British director Iain Softley (K-Pax, Hackers, Backbeat) is set for release in the UK on July 29 through UIP. The Skeleton Key is a contemporary supernatural thriller set largely in the dark atmospheric backwoods just outside of New Orleans. The story centres on Caroline (Hudson), a live-in nurse hired to care for an elderly woman's (Rowlands) ailing husband (Hurt) in their home... a foreboding and decrepit mansion in the Louisiana delta. Intrigued by the enigmatic couple, their mysterious and secretive ways and their rambling house, Caroline begins to explore the old mansion. Armed with a skeleton key that unlocks every door, she discovers a hidden attic room that holds a deadly and terrifying secret.

Steve Lawler was approached to remix the title track by Iain Softley himself. Having long been a fan of Steve - his albums and the DJ sets he?s witnessed in Europe and the US - he believed his pounding rhythms would be the perfect accompaniment to the filmscore and would relate to the ?darkside? sometimes evident in his music. Steve was more than happy to help out. I love scary movies, he says. So when Iain asked me to do this, I was really excited. It?s always been an ambition to get into making music for films.

Iain himself enthuses: The music is always a very important element of a film and in ?The Skeleton Key?, the music carries a secret coded message that lies at the centre of the film?s mystery. I wanted an underground and modern equivalent of this message and it struck me that Steve would be able to take it and run with it. Which he has ? the track compliments the film perfectly. It?s dark, tribal and hypnotic.

It will still be one for the dancefloor, Steve says, but will have an edge to it that none of his other remixes have had to date. You can really go to town with a soundtrack because they use the best quality sound ? using pro-tools and DBX - and when you listen to it, it?s full on and so much sharper. When I got the track, it was like in a hundred parts and you could hear all kinds of things ? nails scraping down blackboards, screams and there?s a chilling lost tribal chant going on. I?ve really gone to town on that! It was nice to get some big tribal drums out again!

This is a step in an auspicious direction for Lawler, with entire film scores next on the list. I?d love to be in my own studio, using my own sounds and being really creative. House music is for the dancefloor but film music takes you on a journey. This journey is just like the film ? dark.

just saw the movie today and i was a bit dissapointed, the story is nice but the movie isnt that scary as other movies of the same genre tend to be, kate is not that bad in her roll but it could be better. All the movie is about rituals and we can learn something about it watching this thriller and thats somewhat interesting, in the end ull understand the movie but u can find a bit confusing in some parts while the movie is rolling. After all is a good movie for those that likes this kind of pieces and for those that looks to see more about rituals and their practise, but whom is looking for something more scary will defenitely have to check for others works, worth the check.
Anyway the 'House of Wax' looks pretty nice.
