    Hunter S. Thompson indulged in numerous hallucinogenic fantasies over the years, but this weekend, one of them morphed into reality: his ashes were blasted into the sky over his farm here, carried by red, blue and silver fireworks in front of a 153-foot monument that Mr. Thompson, the writer and avatar of ''gonzo'' journalism, designed himself almost 30 years ago. Former Senator George McGovern, the protagonist of Mr. Thompson's ''Fear and Loathing: On the Campaign Trail '72,'' was among the 350 invitation-only guests who paid him tribute before liftoff.


    Hunter went out with a bang!

                          a friend of mine's square parents were telling me about this a few days ago. They just came back from Vegas and saw this go down. Some funeral I say. They didn't have a clue who he was, and I didn't want to reveal too much about myself by clueing them in.

                          My favorite Hunter moment was when he was on The Late Show and was asked about what he keeps in his basement. Hunter rattled off a few things and included kegs of gunpowder. O'Brian interrupted, "why, may I ask, would you have kegs of gunpowder?"

                          "For making bombs of course, why else?" Hunter said.

                          cool guy!
