        Re: Customs?!

From what I've experienced about customs within the EC or when ordering stuff from Hong Kong to EC:
        - A gift cannot worth more than 25 USD. If it cost more, then taxes will be applied.
        - taxes are calculated on price of the merchandise PLUS the cost for transport.
If no paper detail those shipping costs, it will be calculated by the customs. (normally there should be 3 or 4 copies of the invoice on the outside of the parcel)
        - taxes are VAT and what we call "droit d'entree", which are taxes made to increase the price in order to protect local market (these can vary from 1 to 10% in my cases, I've never seen more than that amount).
        - of course, custom cannot control everything, so some parcel will not be controlled. This only apply for stuff sended via the regular postal services. If you use DHL, FedEx or else, they will calculate the taxes automatically (no chance to evade the costs)

So, best option is to make an agreement with your contact in the UK, so he will send "2nd hand/discontinued/sale" stuff with a lower price on the customs papers. Of course, ask him not to include an invoice with the regular price in the parcel. What you can also do is paying him the amount he will write on customs papers and then make another payement with the rest. In that case, you will have a proof for the custom that the price on papers is the same as the one you have transfered (in case custom contact you due to strangely low price specified. Yes, they can do so)

Last option is to light a candle at your local church, but from personnal experience, I've seen no difference by doing so.

When I was in Switzerland I left my CD book with the people I was visiting... they shipped it to me, but according to the tracking information on the Internet it took nearly a month to get through customs. What's so wrong with a Cd book full of 100 burned cds?

              It's easy to understand picklemonkey.
              100 cds * 80 min = 8000 minutes
a custom officer works for 38h per week, that's 7h36 per day, or 456 minutes/day
8000 minutes of music divided by 456 minutes of "work" per day = 17.5 days. As there is between 20 and 22 days of work in a month, you have your explanation

Looks like he really enjoyed your cds.
