Remember, quality feedback will continue to provide quality sets!
Brace yourselves!!!
Several months ago I began planning my schedule for what would be my trip to WMC 2005. After getting everything sorted I found out about a party being thrown by Spleen Records (www.spleenrecords.com) at the Astor Hotel. The lineup featured some big names (Desyn, Bill Patrick, Ozgur Can, Noel Sanger, etc) and some that were not so familiar to me. This party turned out to be the unofficial official [mn] meetup and was a great time. I spent virtually all day there and one person that arguably stole the show was Rachael Starr (www.rachaelstarr.com). Most of you have undboutedly heard her productions ('Till There Was You', 'Otherwise What's the Point', etc) but now you get to hear what she can do on the decks. 'Till There Was You', which saw remixes from Mazi, Gabriel & Dresden, and John Creamer & Stephane K to name a few, was released on the Ultra label and will also see a release on Positiva in September. Rachael has DJ duties in Mexico on September 16, 17, and 18 and will be making a trip to New York some time in October to perform as well. After hearing her lay down a lush set in Miami I've been pestering her nonstop to throw a mix our way. Well, it was worth the wait because you all are going to love this set! For more details on her DJ dates, feel free to send me a PM or an email or contact Rachael at her website.
GranT (www.inthemix.com.au) who hosts the .AUdio show on Proton was gracious enough to share with us the 2 mixes that he aired on his August show. Fresh beats laid down by both Rowan Blades and Vance Musgrove will no doubt fit nicely in your ears. For those of you that have been living under a rock, .AUdio features the absolute best in downunderground beats and international every third Thursday of the month at 5pm EST on www.protonradio.com. Contact grantt@inthemix.com.au for more info.
Guillaume (www.galaxiefm.com) is someone that most of you might not be familiar with. He has radio shows on 3 international stations as well as occasional mixes for various internet progressive stations. I tuned into his Bulgarian radio show last weekend and was absolutely floored by the way he seemlessly mixed today's top progressive tunes with the classics that we all know and love. Being based in France has it's disadvantages at times due to the lack of a strong progressive base, but it makes the success that Guillaume has achieved that much more well deserved. He's an extremely hard-working artist and a nice guy to boot! Give this mix a listen if you enjoy true progressive in every sense of the word! Check out his radio show 'Progressive Session' on the following stations/websites: In Russia every Friday at 5PM GMT on the '7' button of Special Radio at www.specialradio.net; In France every Saturday at 4PM GMT on Radio Galaxie 95.3FM at www.galaxiefm.com; and in Bulgaria every Sunday at 6PM GMT on Radio Emotion at www.radioemotion.net.

Rachael Starr
www.rachaelstarr.com
Combining skill with modernism, and her aptitude for style with ingenuity, Rachael is breaking new ground in the electronic and dance music industries. One of the only female producers on the scene, she feels it necessary to prove herself and work very hard at what she does. "I guess that one of the most important things to me is to not forget why you are doing what you are doing. Take yourself seriously, and other people will too." She says, "In the end what it comes down to is the music, what it is as a whole and how it makes me who I am. I am the music and the music is me."
A native Californian, Rachael was brought up in a fairly musical household and informally trained in piano, cello, and voice. Her interest in dance music was first sparked circa 1992 when she discovered producers such as Orbital, Underworld, and The Prodigy; she has been hooked ever since. In that time, she has become a well-respected producer and remixer as well as an esteemed DJ. She has earned the reputation of an artist who is always looking forward and refuses to accept any picky definitions or classifications of dance music. Completely conscious of what she is doing, Rachael makes music that is both floor moving, and at the same time, deep.
Throughout her life Rachael has had first-hand experience with how much music can influence a person. This knowledge along with her desire to create music that made people feel the way music she loved made her feel ignited a passion for production, and the soon to follow performance of DJing.
After spending a good amount of time learning the basic rules of production, Rachael dabbled in and mixed styles ranging from downtempo to drum-n-bass and house to trance. Although her productions were progressing, her knowledge of the industry was small, and with the advice from friends, Rachael refined her style and released her first record on Bad Boy Bill's label, Mix Connection Multimedia in Chicago. While it wasn't music that reflected her true goals or style, it was a great chance to get her name out in the scene.
Since then, Rachael has continued to release tracks, collaborate with artists and do remixes. She has DJed in New York, Chicago, and LA. She looks forward to what the future holds for dance music and hopes that she can be an essential part in helping it to grow and move forward. She has a desire to create something distinct, and as a result, will continue to forge new ground and create music that is unique and passionate.

Rowan Blades
www.inthemix.com.au/fm/22047/
Rowan Blades is best known as half of the massively successful Breeder. Breeder's first two singles, 'The Chain' and 'Twilo Thunder', have sold in excess of 25,000 copies world-wide, having first come to prominence on Sasha's near-legendary 'Global Underground - San Francisco' compilation. 'Twilo Thunder' has since gone on to achieve great commercial success with lucrative licences to compilations from the Ministry of Sound and Euphoria 2, which have sold over 500,000 copies between them. Breeder's third, fourth and fifth tracks, 'Tyrantanic', 'Rockstone' and 'New York FM' have been showcased on Sasha and John Digweed's last 'Northern Exposure - Expeditions' compilation, as well as on John Digweed's 'Global Underground - Hong Kong'. With over 20,000 pre-sales for Tyrantanic, things look set to continue in a similar vain to how they have started, and in doing so stamping out any doubt that they are a 'one hit wonder'. This rapid rise to prominence has resulted in several high-profile remix projects. These include Tilt's 'Children', Planet Perfecto's classic 'It's Not Over Yet', Brother Brown's 'Under the Water', Orbital's 'Nothing Left', and Evolution's 'Phoenix'. On the back of this success, Rowan has started a new project with Gaetan Schurrer, who has engineered for Sasha. With successful remixes of, Orbital's 'Nothing Left' (FFRR), and of Space Manoeuvres 'Stage One', released on Hooj Choons, as featured on Sasha's recent Global Underground, they seem to have established themselves without even releasing their first single.
Breeder's success on Rowan's own Rhythm Syndicate record label has boosted the label to a position of prominence within the dance music community. Rowan has since been able to sign four new tracks to Rhythm Syndicate for release next year, and has prospective mixes from the likes of Slacker, Tilt & Evolution to name a few. Add to this the status of Rhythm Syndicate Records as one of the top 10 independent dance music stores in the UK, helping compile Pete Tong's Buzz Chart play-lists for Radio 1, and Rowan's record empire is one of the most influential in the country.
Rowan's DJ-ing career has taken him all over the world. Having played in Britain for gigs like Bedrock & Gatecrasher the success of Breeder has enabled him to elevate himself onto an international stage. Breeder is currently the biggest selling non-pop dance act in Norway, Rowan has played there with great success, as well as in Sweden, and at a gig for 14,000 ravers in Copenhagen. The burgeoning American demand for dance music has seen Rowan play at the legendary Shadow Lounge in Miami, as well as boat parties on the Hudson. The nascent Chinese scene has seen Rowan playing at The Face in Canton, attracting only 100 people less than Paul Oakenfold! Most recently, Rowan taken his Rhythm Syndicate record label and the Breeder name to Hong Kong as the main attraction of a huge gig for Clubstar Entertainment's. He has also establish a monthly residency in Moscow for Club Xlll. Closer to home, Rowan has a bi monthly with Union @ Space in Leeds. He also still maintains his monthly residency with More Tea Vicar, the Cambridge organisation for whom he has played with Sasha, Carl Cox and Danny Howells, as well as the annual Strawberry Fayre festival, at which Rowan played last year to 20,000 people.

Vance Musgrove
www.inthemix.com.au/fm/22287/
Vance Musgrove is, first and foremost, a music lover. Having been classically trained in piano from the age of 3, it seemed as though music would always be a big part of his life. However, it took some years before he discovered the sounds that would shape the rest of his musical identity.
The more he listened and the more he played, the more Vance wanted to look beyond mixing records, and so he fell into production in early 2000. For him it was the logical extension of DJing as a musical exercise, and he relished the ability to experiment without rules and create music in a way he?d never done before. Exploring a range of sounds, his early work was equal parts prolific and very, very rough. It was only a matter of time before he produced something worthy of release, and in late 2000 Kasey Taylor picked up Squelch for his Vapour Recordings label. Vance?s first release drew close attention from those early progressive influences of his, even making it on to Kasey Taylor?s Balance 002 mix CD, and Parks & Wilson?s Painting on Silence compilation. That year Vance also tackled the Nubreed classic, Food For Thought in an unreleased remix that many still remember today thanks to the heavy support it was given by Phil K at the legendary Sunny parties in Melbourne.
DJ-wise, Vance was called on to support Adam Freeland, Infusion and Dave Seaman, as well as taking his first steps interstate, playing in Hobart for the Tasmanian University Union Dance Music Society?s New Year?s Eve party that year, again alongside Infusion. He was also invited to Melbourne to play at Private Function, and it was on this trip that he and Phil K produced their first record together, entitled Lost Sunday. A trippy breakbeat adventure that defies pigeonholing, it will soon see the light of day on Lobotomy Records out of the US.
That summer also saw Vance collaborate with another young Canberra producer, named Ross McGrath. The two had met a couple years previously but hadn?t found the time to collaborate until that summer. Ross played Vance a record he?d been working on, and Vance instantly took to it and asked if he could add to it. A weekend?s worth of work later and Freakout was finished. Phil K would again prove instrumental to breaking the record to audiences worldwide. He gave it to Anthony Pappa on a trip to the UK, and soon it was slated for inclusion on Pappa?s Balance 006 compilation. Once again, Vance had a hit on his hands, with support also coming from Jono Fernandez, Luke Chable, James Zabiela and Hernan Cattaneo, who included it on his June 2004 mix for John Digweed?s Kiss 100 radio show.
2004 was another successful year. He took his musical skills to more interstate parties, playing at Inflight in Brisbane and Resurrection in Perth, and also scored support slots for Phil K, Anthony Pappa and Andy Page in Canberra. The year ended with Vance?s festival debut at Australia?s renowned Earthcore Global Carnival, sharing the bill with artists like Shpongle, Younger Brother & Freq Nasty for a weekend of hijinks in the beautiful countryside just outside of Melbourne. While Vance was in town, he also supported Steve Gerrard on his Australian Tour.
2005 has already seen a major hit for Vance, with Freakout finally seeing the light of day on the Coney Island EP, and promptly hitting the coveted #1 spot on the Balance Record Pool chart. With a swag of tunes on the way, and a few tricks up his sleeve still to be announced, it looks like Vance will be closing out 2005 with a bang!
