2 are on vbulletin, but gaia is on phpbb. So your worries about the size of mn seem not valid. phpbb can handle much more.

well the guy who owns gaiaonline is a serious php programmer and has rewritten a bucket load of the core code on how posts are pulled from the DB etc. to speed up the forums, the original php thats governing gaiaonline is probably not even the same as what is released by phpbb

you can see the effects of a heavy forum on phpbb which is not even as crowded as gaiaonline and perform some basic functions such as searching for certain items and see the numerous problems you will run into i.e. blank pages coming up, errors etc.

on smaller forums at least u know which people are the assholes / the bores / the intelligent ones / the funny / and the totaly fuckwitted or people who say things just to provoke .

a smaller community is a closer community
