i remeber sasha being sponsored by toyota for a northern exsposure tour years ago. The picture in mixmag had him standing next to a toyota people carrier looking absolutly twated
I suppose it's an indication of just how much commercialisation is needed to make some of the events viable. In the same way Pepsi/Coke/McDonalds etc sponsor a touring pop act, the production costs are prohibitively high to do something on the scale of Tiesto's shows.
That said, it goes on in small ways too. All of our local headline DJs, even in less-popular styles of dance music, are at least sponsored for their clothing by big youth brands. Many of the club nights will have particular brands of booze or drinks pushed, and part of that sponsor contract will mean you can't get a competing drink at the event.
The big sponsors in dance music in Australia are Smirnoff, Motorola and Levis in my experience.
Tobacco sponsorship is probably the one thing that's still a bit grey. I remember having a conversation some months ago with Sydney's leading prog promoter about this. He was paining over whether to let the Peter Stuyvesant girls have a cig booth at his club night. The money offered was quite significant. (Note: it's legal to smoke in nightclubs in Australia)
Sasha and Toyota product placement is a bit odd though.
Why don't DJs sponsor what's relevant to what they represent? I mean, why doesn't Numark or Technics try and find DJ sponsors? Like I'm sure PVD would be more than happy to represent Technics cuz apparently he throws any other turntable brand out the club's window, literally. Dunno if that was a rumor or not but it doesn't seem unlikely.
How about Oakie slipmats so he can smile back at you as you play?!
Carl Cox is sponsored by Vestax (but uses Technics when he plays)
Sasha is sponsored by Allen & Heath (I think)
Q-Bert is sponsored by Technics (I think)
I know one of our local headliners (Mark Dynamix) that's sponsored by Stanton.
There would be heaps more... but I suppose it comes down to how much money is being thrown around. The days of the ultra-enormous pay packets for DJs are gone, and many would be readjusting their lifestyles around a lower income.
Endorsement is one way to soften the blow. (Or pay for it in many cases.)
Yeah, in Canada, they have wiped out cigarette companies sponsoring events here. We previously had Goldclub Series events regularly across Canada which was sponsered by Benson & Hedges. They were able to bring some amazing dj's like sasha, digweed, which gave a smaller city like Calgary a chance to see amazing dj livesets. Nowadays in Calgary, nothing big
isn't pvd on billboards in the uk advertising cellphones?
and colette is gonna be in the next motorola commercial.
Colette already did a motorola commercial last year and it was part of the same "Connectred" promotion PVD was part of, who also did a commercial... There was one other dj part of this whole thing but can't recall who it is anymore
