Boot into safe mode and remove this:

(Registry) HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run \CAS2
(File) c:\program files\system files\system.exe



...make sure you're in safe mode first.

POOP! I thought that might have worked. But he's still getting IE crashes and random popups while idle (the random popups appear to be cming from IE even though IE is closed). He's also getting the same popups in firefox.

the system looks clean... are you still getting popups?

if the browser is still crashing, do this:

• Run AutoRuns
• Go to the Internet Explorer tab
• Wait for the hourglass to disappear from it
• Uncheck everything except Adobe Acrobat IE Helper Version 6.0 for ActivieX

try running IE. If it works, just delete those things

Like crazy! IE doesn't function - opens in a small window and crashed in 5secs.

did you uncheck everything in the IE tab? Even do the Acrobat one... it says "ActivieX" for some reason

you should do this all in safe mode

try microsoft antispyware....if you are able to download it on another PC and x-fer it over or burn it and install.

Its MS crap...but sometimes it'll do a decent job removing this sorta crap.
