            Re: Why Can't I Own a Canadian?

Bart your comments reminded me of something I once saw on Malcom in the Middle. Its when Dewey is talking to his teacher about God, I managed to find a copy of the text online:

Dewey: I don?t like this church. Ever since we came here, all I do is think about stuff. What kind of God makes children think when they?re not even in school?

Teacher: Well, now, see that is a torment. But I?m sure he has his reasons.

Dewey: Like Pastor Roy said, how God?s so much bigger and wiser than us. And trying to see what he?s thinking would be like an ant trying to see what I?m thinking.

Teacher: Yes, exactly. But we can trust in his wisdom and we can have faith that he is watching over us.

Dewey: Like me with the anthill in my backyard. I spent days watching the ants, trying to figure out which ones were good and which ones were bad. But they all just look like ants. So I started smiting all of them. I was smiting them with the garden hose, and with lighter fluid, and with the lawnmower. And to be perfectly honest, I think I went a little crazy with the shovel. Those ants could have been praying to me all day; I wouldn?t have heard ?em. There was nothing they could do about it. Really, it?s the same with us. There?s nothing we can do about anything, either. So why worry about it? Hey, this is making me feel better. I guess all we can do is live our lives with as much kindness and decency as possible and try not to dwell on God standing over us with that giant shovel. Bye!

              Re: Why Can't I Own a Canadian?

my issues arn't with the "is there god / isn't there a god" . it's the ludicrus religions and there riddiculous insistance on what "gods word " is . Here is one thing that always puzzles me . Vanity is a sin in almost all religions . And wanting to be worshipped and adored is a form of vanity .. And according to some religions god wants to be worshipped 6 times a day .And all religions insist u worship him at least everyday .. so does that not make god as vain as vain gets . Or does it just indicate that the foundation of religeuos worship is bullshit

Give us some food for discussion Cowardly, in fact, I invite every other religion represented on the board to do so. But one thing: don't judge or go telling people they're 'wrong'. There is no wrong, there's only different opinions now.

I've been in classes in which more than half was fiercely religious (African studies > fecking bible translators and missionaries), and for years they have tried to convert me. To no avail, but the discussions were quite nice and funny...but never ever in my life have I heard anything that made me even remotely doubt my own opinion.

what would that higher power be?

I am still getting some info together..... it takes me some time because I have many many books and study daily in the Bible. All I can say is this; some people see things in a way that does not allow for something that is not physically present to believe in. Some people need physical proof that God exists meaning seeing God. Some people understand the meaning of the word faith and that is enough for them and actually all God asks of us to start yourself on the path to eternal peace. No man has ever seen God. But there is much proof that God exists. It is in the things that have happened in the past. The best way to explain it is like this; The books of the Bible were written by many people and the dates of the books are pretty accurate as they were passed on from generation to generation as we would our history today. In several generations the children will be reading about what we have witnessed in the last 10 years. Religion was the most important thing to the people back then. You can find that out by studying mid-eastern and Greek history. There are many many instances that are found outside the Bible in Greek history that point to the apostles and even Jesus and what they did. If you look up a Jewish historian (that was appointed by one of the Roman emporors to record the history of the Roman Empire ) named Flavius Jesephus you will see he spoke of many of the things that were written in the Old Testament hundreds of years earlier (called prophesies) that came to be. For example the destruction of Jerusalem that happened in 70 AD was predicted in Matthew by Jesus. It happened as he said it would. That is one of the things I will try to find to post here.

This post is getting long so I will stop for now and I am off to the shower. Just got off work.
