    Soundforge question

I have recorded some older tapes into Soundforge but I have no idea how to remove the hiss. Can anyone give me any specifics on how to do this?

there's almost no way to get rid of that in soundforge. but, and im not sure if it supports such a plugin, you may want to try getting a 'gate' plugin.
a 'gate' plugin allows you to sort of ''close off'' some of the sound. if that makes sense.
with all my experience in soundforge i've yet to discover a way to make a shitty recording sound good.
soundforge is basically a WAV editor, not manipulator.

Ya, I know all about the shitty recording...a friend of mine gave me that tidbit a few years ago and I stopped beating myself up trying to get it to sound good. It just never works. I'll look for a "gate", if I can't find one then I will release the recordings here "as is", seeing as I have yet to see this artists "early work" on this board and it will be my payback to this wonderful community . Thanks for the tip!

you can try to find the range for the noise ... apply the gate and see if that helps. probably what will happen is that if any frequency falls into that gate ... bye bye.

i did this once. it is a low or high?

              Re: Soundforge question

heres another tip for recording into soundfoge...

turn your line in way down. use the mixer (EQ / Gain) to bring the volume up during recording.
its gonna come out just right if you just barely clip red throughout the mix. if your levels are slamming red its way too hot.
this works for me, but surely it varies between computers / users

              just a thought.

there is a plug in that removes hiss and crackle...track it down.

                          Re: Soundforge question

You want something to remove the hiss frequencies...like a paramteric EQ. The easiest way to do it is to drop the amplitude (dB), shorten the bandwidth (Q) and try rolling the high-mid frequency around until the hiss is reduced. You can also try this with the high frequencies, but they don't always have a bandwidth control to focus your target range. Hope that helps.
