1> to be aware, aware of yourself and your surroundings
2> the mind is the stage for consciousness, it interprets sensory information into terms that create your reality
couldn't the brain be considered the actual physical thing and the mind be the conscious thinking portion which isn't actually something you can see or touch?

that's the way I think of it, but psychologists my have more specific definitions for these, I don't really know
one of my classes is doing a project on relating the brain and consciousness. i need to ask 10 people this question so i can analyze their answers.
Pleaseeee reply
1. What does it mean to be conscious?
2. How does consciousness relate to the brain and mind?
thanks it helps out a bunch
1.) to be conscious is to have the brain be aware of it's surroundings through the use of its five senses.
2.) i would say that "relating" is a bad term. they are one in the same and that consciousness is a state of mind and not a seperate entity that just has some type of relation.

1. at first i was thinking that consciousness would have to do with thought. i then thought about that and realized that i can be conscious without holding a thought in my head. my answer then moved more toward consciousness having to with the interpretation of thought or interpretation of input/impulses from your surroundings based on your senses.
2. it was this second question that made me re-examine my answer to the first question. the brain comparitively to the mind.... the brain is an organ; a mass. i look at it more as a tool for which thoughts get processed. the mind then becomes the metaphorical state of the brain thinking and processing. getting back to conciousness being a state of mind having to do with the brain. while the brain can still be a brain without conciousness.
i hope that makes sense. either way it got me thinking.
once upon a time, machines were mice, and men were lions. now that its the opposite, it's twice upon a time
