EU wants equal control of the internet...

By AOIFE WHITE, AP Business Writer 1 hour, 56 minutes ago

BRUSSELS, Belgium - The European Union insisted Friday that governments and the private sector must share the responsibility of overseeing the Internet, setting the stage for a showdown with the United States on the future of Internet governance.

A senior U.S. official reiterated Thursday that the country wants to remain the Internet's ultimate authority, rejecting calls in a United Nations meeting in Geneva for a U.N. body to take over.
EU spokesman Martin Selmayr said a new cooperation model was important "because the Internet is a global resource."
"The EU ... is very firm on this position," he added.
The Geneva talks were the last preparatory meeting before November's World Summit on the Information Society in Tunisia.
A stalemate over who should serve as the principal traffic cops for Internet routing and addressing could derail the summit, which aims to ensure a fair sharing of the Internet for the benefit of the whole world.
At issue is who would have ultimate authority over the Internet's master directories, which tell Web browsers and e-mail programs how to direct traffic.
That role has historically gone to the United States, which created the Internet as a Pentagon project and funded much of its early development. The U.S. Commerce Department has delegated much of that responsibility to a U.S.-based private organization with international board members, but Commerce ultimately retains veto power.
Some countries have been frustrated that the United States and European countries that got on the Internet first gobbled up most of the available addresses required for computers to connect, leaving developing nations with a limited supply to share.
They also want greater assurance that as they come to rely on the Internet more for governmental and other services, their plans won't get derailed by some future U.S. policy.
Policy decisions could at a stroke make all Web sites ending in a specific suffix essentially unreachable. Other decisions could affect the availability of domain names in non-English characters or ones dedicated to special interests such as pornography.

I've got two thoughts on this...and not sure which one i follow

    1. get your own fucking internet if you want to control it. the main servers are here, we'll do as we see fit.

    2. response #1 is pretty harsh in this day and age, i mean, come on, what are we, communists? If some country came up with some revolutionary technology that betters mankind, i'd want it shared equally with the world, and that said, the internet should be globally maintained by some sort of NON UN panel, but a body of equal representitives from all countries except fucking France.

    your thoughts??

    agreed.
    completely agrees
    concurs.

when it comes to regulating the internet, all i say is keep the kiddie porn off it, arrest those who use it, and wipe out the sites that evil do-ers use. thats about it.

we created this thing, and made it available to the planet. now certain groups want us to give it up, and hand it over to them cause they want a share....umm... NO.

thats like someone inventing and maintaining a product that everyone uses, then the stragglers who were late to jump on coming in and saying "we want control away from you, frankly because we are jealous"

The maintaining of the "product" is a global effort tho, (with the exception of China, who has their own little communist internet.)

suppose Germany comes up with a cure for cancer, they made it, they decide who gets it...

          etc...

          similar logic?

granted, it's an extreme example, but...an example nonetheless.

I feel like it's much ado about nothing, ultimately. The internet is the closest thing we have in this world to a silicon-based lifeform. It's not like someone can just hit a switch and turn the thing off. I suspect if this ends up coming to a head, people will figure out a way to work around it and connect some other way. The idea of the US, EU, or anyone for that matter claiming the exclusive right to regulate the global organism that it the internet is ridiculous, I think.

Of course, I know diddly-poo about networking, so take this with a grain of salt.

well thats the capiltalist in me.

i feel like that with the drug producers, they should do the right thing and let everyone have em at a fair rate, but hell its their right in america to protect their product and do as they please.

but the internet is free. you only pay the company that provides the cable/dsl/phone lines and modems. as well as your computer producer. we arent paying for access to it.(not including AOL, but they provide services outside of access).

no-one owns the net . and any server the united states tries to censor just shifts to a different location . you accept the net for it's evils as well as the limitless good . and personnaly i like the way the net is catching the kiddy fiddlers. i just wish the sentancing was tougher when we get them

I agree with Jenks... Why would one want to be the sole owner and operator of something so large other then the obvious negative ones? Sharing the power would ensure better decisions are made surrounding important issues relating to the Internet and its future... Something this massive should not be controlled by one brain/one point of view.

The E U wants power just so it can get more power . Iv'e read loads of articles by ex euro mp's who are disgusted with the way the E U P is more concerned with it'self than people it is ment to serve. Good laws and regulations are thrown out because of divides between member states and 1000's of ridiculous ones are brought through because france/germany/spain/belgium and italy think it will give them a better advantage in business Those five countries want the EU to challenge Americas influence on the world stage .. Those countries are in spiraling decline and need to get their own shit together before they can start telling others what to do . The E U is a failed experiment and it is desperately trying to get hold of as much power as it can to stop itself crumbling and bing abandoned by everyone but the die hards europhiles

The less people involved is the best option. Too many organizations and bureacrats screw things up. Unless the U.S. is grossly abusing their advantage then why change? Plus, I didn't read a solid reason for the sharing authority.

Actually your wrong. This fight is over the root DNS servers. When you type www.mercuryserver.com it is actually www.mercuryserver.com. Notice the extra period that follows com. There are 13 root dns servers 10 located in the US, 2 in Europe and 1 in Asia. The entire system is based on name lookups which start at the root level.

Personally I think it should remain in control of the current owners but the problem is that the EU can basically say go fuck yourself and create their own DNS infastructure, then Bush's prophicies of "the Internets" will come true, since www.mercuryserver.com one side can say go to address 1.2.3.4 and the other it can say 5.6.7.8. Getting their own internet would be more devistating than us just handing over some DNS servers.

The internet is just a bunch of networks, no one entity owns it. I'm amazed at the comments here since nobody seems to have a clue but have already formed such strong opinions because "its ours"

BTW Jenks, China does not have their own internet, they only filter content by means of proxies. You can easily do this at home if you don't want you kids looking at web pages with sex, tits, and pussy on it. China, however choses words like democracy.

And to the argument of too many organizations running them and things getting screwed up, below is the list of ownership in 2002. Notice any problems then? These have also changed hands many times.
