01. Vector Lovers - Patience (Bvdub's Oceans Everlasting) [Soma Records | SOMA359D]
As we mark a milestone in the career of Vector Lovers which sees the ten year anniversary of the project, we at Soma Records are proud to bring you the first single from the forth coming album iPhonica (so called as the whole album was created on the iPhone!). Featuring a spectacular remix of 'Patience' from Dutch wonder producer Bvdub backed up by the deep and trippy 'Replicator'.
bvdub's remix opens the EP in truly ambient form as lush, epic pads sweep through the opening layered with ethereal voices. The track quickly picks up the pace as a broken, almost two step beat works out over deep sub bass as more vocal trips allow this track to ebb and flow perfectly. Not content to let this track simply clock out, Bvdub continues to push this track beyond the limits as a gritty baseline permeates the layers of ambience and crisp drums making this one of our most epic remixes to date.
Replicant is pure Vector Lovers at his best, A pulsating bass rhythm kick off the track, dropping down in to a perfect four to the floor beat. Syncopated vocal cuts trip the track out while haunting pads flow through adding an air of mystery while expertly timed fills help kick this track onto the dance floor.
This EP perfectly balances Vector Lovers' machine funk with bvdub's masterful rendition of Patience making us all the more eager to unleash iPhonice to the world.

02. Tom Taylor - This World (Clive Henry & Rui Da Silva Dischords Mix) (These Things EP) [Fina Records | FINA10]
Fina Records return with a stellar six track EP entitled ‘ These Things’ this .... by Leeds-based producer Tom Taylor, backed with mixes from Jack Dixon and Clive Herny & Rui Da Silva. Fina Records launched back in 2011 and at such an early stage has already released cuts from the likes of Leif, Mic Newman, Simon Baker and MAM (Miguel Campbell & Matt Hughes). This stands as testament to the attentive A&R approach of the label heads, picking up on rising talents in the industry and having a heavy impact from the off.
This release from local talent Tom Taylor marks a milestone for the label as they reach their tenth release, Taylor is most-notably known for his work with labels such as 2020 Vision, Poker Flat and Dessous and delivers infectious house grooves full of warmth and oozing class.
The release opens with ‘Twilight’, a smooth, ethereal number employing gentile filtered melodies, a whispering vocal hook and off-kilter broken beats all of which are seemingly ever-evolving for seven minute duration.
Following is ‘Don’t Give Up’, a chuggy, slo-mo track, driven by punchy disco drums, soulful vocal licks and a cosseting pad-line. Taylor demonstrates his ability to craft intelligent, hypnotising music across the board here brilliantly.
Next up is ‘This World’, a piano-driven, groove-led track focusing on steady progression and subtle background automation to create a flourishing dynamism, Taylor throws in some emotive vocal lines and hi- strings to boot, resulting in a beautiful house cut.
Stepping up on remix duties is man of the hour Jack Dixon reworking ‘Twilight’, the Hotflush artist strips back the vibe of the original with sparse, weighty drums and infuses drawn out reverb tails and elongated echoes into the depths of the background alongside a heady synth line tipping this interpretation into peak-time territory.
[Fina Records]
Launching into a saturated market of here today and gone tomorrow digital labels might sound like a risky business, but when the label founders are Simon Morell (DDD) Matt Long (mono cult) and 2020 visions boss Ralph Lawson, you can be assured that attention to detail will be second to none with only the highest standard of artists and music being signed.
Not afraid to experiment with styles and tempos Fina embraces everything from low slung techy grooves, with a splattering of disco through to the deeper shades of house produced by both up and coming talent and more established acts on the scene today. If Variety is the spice of life then Fina is the label which provides just that.
[Special House Association Review]
Launched from Leeds In 2011, Fina always produce quality material. A recent visit to the city affirmed my thoughts that it must be one of the key palces in Europe for house music and great nights. The line ups on display certainly rivalled Glasgow and the number of producers working away there was amazing. Not to mention the excellent Waxworks Record Store.
So, it is no surprise that labels like Fina exist and operate from this old Yorkshire metropolis. Here, homeboy Tom Taylor brings a substantial EP to bear. A rising star, he is granted the tenth release on the label following work on 2020 Vision, Poker Flat and Dessous.
Opening track “Twilight” is a sensitive, ethereal slice of emotive house that breathes its way through warm pads and broken beats before surging into a deep and lovely seven minutes plus of surging, soulful house soundtrack that reminds me of some old releases on labels like Bottom Line. Night time city grooves.
The prolific Jack Dixon adds urgency with a stripped down moment of “now” that fans of George Fitzgerald, Huxley and the new school of UK house will lap up. Shimmering with an almost song structure, it kind of lacks the spirit of the original for me but delivers floor friendliness in abundance with slamming drums and thoughtful touches.
“Don’t Give Up” is more direct in approach with a sticky, funk groove sitting around the mid tempo mark as it slots a disco loop in here, adds a mournful synth or two there and develops into the kind of track that will always sound good in the mix. The gruff, late coming bass line will see to that.
“This World” is a straight ahead, mood-based piece of piano house that develops into a vocal that sounds, to this listener, like a moment from the vaults of The Sound of Philadelphia. An unexpected soulful refrain that leads straight back into piano flourish. It could be a huge track this one in fact. I also like the dub for its bubbly, melancholic take on proceedings and a manner that reminds me of Andre Lodemann when he gets all “aggressive”.
Peace Division guru Clive Henry and Lisbon don Rui Da Silva are given a chance to remix on a digital-only exclusive mix. Choosing to strip it out, D-Train synths are employed with a severe element of wobble for good measure. It’s a surprisingly low slung take and perhaps a sign of future work that we can expect from the duo – marrying big room European-type elements with a more downbeat approach. All complete with a perfectly acceptable and spaced out breakdown to complete a release that ticks the boxes, demands repeat plays and showcases all that I already knew about Leeds…open-minded and very house.
[RA Review]
It's taken Fina Records a relatively short period of time to reach its tenth release. Almost exactly two years since Mic Newman's inaugural EP, the Leeds label has adopted an adept A&R operation, cleverly acknowledging, while never pandering to, recent house music trends. Taking the imprint into double figures with a hefty six-track EP is local producer Tom Taylor.
Ethereal opener "Twilight" escorts you across swathes of lush electronics. Holding off the drop until well into the fifth minute, it provides the release with a strong, seductive start. On remix duty, Jack Dixon keeps things simple, maintaining the original's emotive veneer but with a touch more dance floor swing. On "Don't Give Up," Taylor significantly lowers the pace and intensifies the atmosphere, making for an impassioned, uplifting roller.
Normal service is resumed on piano house burner "This World," as Taylor marries classic, zesty chords with the dulcet tones of Luther Vandross to give the desired climactic effect. The dub strips away both piano and vox to leave a surprisingly engaging, groovier affair, while long time associates Clive Henry and Rui da Silva team up to offer the highlight of the release, this time replacing the piano with a chassis that oozes nothing but classy conceit.
03. Bobby Womack - Love Is Gonna Lift You Up (Julio Bashmore Remix) [XL Recordings | XLDS581]
XL Recordings always know where to turn when they want a hot remix of their latest album signings, so when Julio Bashmore's name became attached to Bobby Womack, we knew we were in for something special. Womack's raw soul vocal works a treat rubbing up against Bashmore's siren-sounding future house sparseness. A peak-time jacker powered by a clipped and bouncing bassline, featuring a sing-along vocal that will have the crowd going mental. On the flip an the equally ace rework from UK funky types Exemen, who slam in the broken samba-house vibes for proper dancefloor damage. Big tune folks!
Here to massively improve your Friday night is the brand new Julio Bashmore remix of Bobby Womack's Love Is Gonna Lift You Up. So big.
Second single to be lifted off Bobby Wommack's "The Bravest Man In The Universe" LP featuring - "Love Is Gonna Lift You Up" gets the remix treatment from none other than Julio Bashmore. The result is a bass heavy, dance-floor re-rub where mr. Wommack's vocal is still the centrepiece. Limited copies in XL house bag. Essential.
[Factmag]
As he’s wont to do, Julio Bashmore has flipped Bobby Womack’s ‘Love Is Gonna Lift You Up’ into a resounding house anthem.
The original song, appearing on Bobby Womack’s The Bravest Man In The Universe is a bit of playful disco. Bashmore discards much of that for a remix based on a sinewy synth line and a massive build, using Womack’s vocals as a late-night call to action. The construction is similar to Bashmore’s breakthrough hit ‘Battle for Middle You.’ As the saying goes, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
After beating cancer, Bobby Womack is set to tour the US and Europe (tour dates below). For his part, Julio Bashmore recently launched Broadwalk Records with the fantastic ‘Au Seve’ single.
04. Raxon - Sunrise (Be Right There EP) [Save Room Recordings | SRR036]
Raxon has had his head deep in electronic music for over a decade now. A self-starter who soon rose through the ranks, he was regularly found in top clubs around Dubai. Soon after, one of the Top 100 Clubs in the world according to DJ Mag, namely 360º, became his regular home after the Audio Tonic crew installed the Egyptian as resident.
His EP on Save Room Recordings reflects his deep understanding of how todays House Music really functions. Two tracks that shake things up on the dance floor so absolutely smoothly but still with a certain edge and heaps of sexiness.

05. LB - Superstitious Heart (Ralph Lawson Dooob Mix) [2020Vision | LBX001DX]
Superstitious Heart produced by Maya Jane Coles and James Ford. Whatever Sets You Free produced by Baunz.
[Fluxmusic Review]
2020Vision have delivered once again. Their latest EP “Superstitious Heart – LB” is an exciting collaborative writing venture between Victoria Hesketh (Little Boots), Maya Jane Coles and James Ford (Simian Mobile Disco).
“Superstitious Heart” see’s Maya’s production drift away from the dark club cuts and more towards the euphorically lifting production found in her remix of Florence And The Machine. Hesketh’s vocal fuses with syncopated synths, floating effortlessly above a thick harmonious bass hook, whilst subtle percussion amplifies the melodic groove. The instrumental version follows, for anyone just looking for MJC’s raw trademark thump.
The project has also seen the return of the iconic 2020 Vision partnership between Ralph Lawson and Carl Finlow. The 2020 Vision Main Mix throws all vocals into an up-tempo yet mellow groove, reverberating synth-lines bolstered by a rhythmic bass-kick mould the track together. Lawson’s Dooob Mix flourishes additional ‘Ooo’s’ over a grittier beat, and the Instrumental Mix takes listeners deeper into the intricacies of the Original.
Part 2 of the project includes an original track by LB, a Dub version by Baunz and a remix of “Superstitious Heart” by the infamous PBR Streetgang.
‘Whatever Sets You Free’ holds a hazy latenite vibe throughout, Hesketh’s distorted vocals and wavy bass tone impart a slightly psychedelic vibe. Moda Black’s Baunz twists out a ‘Dub’ version – a no-frills heady production for more euphonious bliss.
PBR Streetgang offers up a commendable interpretation and perhaps the strongest remix of the package. His take lowers the tone into a melodic smoothie of evolving pad lines, deep bass and layered vocal snippets.

07. Marco Bailey Vs Filterheadz - Fifth Ave [Bedrock Digital | Beddigi-32]
08. Marco Bailey Vs Filterheadz - Mansion [Bedrock Digital | Beddigi-32]
Bedrock is going from strength to strength already in 2013. Following Miguel Bastida & Florian Kaltstrøm’s superb “De Barcelona a Viena EP” and Two Hand Salute’s buzzing “Scale Up” / “We Are Drum” offering, comes a killer peak-time double-header resulting from a new collaboration between Marco Bailey and Filterheadz.
Marco Bailey is flying high, having just released his critically acclaimed new album “High Volume” on his MB Elektronics label he also regularly releases his work on Bedrock, Intec and Drumcode. Meanwhile, fellow Belgian’s Filterheadz remixed John Digweed and Nick Muir’s classic “Emerald” back in 2003 and have been releasing music on labels such as Intec, 1605, Respekt, Toolroom and MB Elektronics for over 10 years now. After a short break, they returned to the techno scene in summer 2012 and haven’t dropped out of the Beatport Techno Top 100 since!
Having been friends with Marco for over a decade, they started doing some studio sessions together a few months ago and there was such a great chemistry they have emerged with these two killer tracks. “Fifth Avenue” continues to raise the bar where Marco Bailey’s excellent “Watergate EP” (BED85) left off a couple of years ago, teamed with the energetic “Mansion” it forms a perfect peak-time package.
