    Download Price Hike Imminent

Just thought a few of you might be interested in what I found on futuremusic's site. I find it quite interesting that they are comparing itunes with BeatPort. See for yourself.

    Jeff
    ../ Download Price Hike Imminent

Rumors of a rise in individual download prices on the leading online music services surfaced again when Steve Jobs, Apple Computer's CEO, did some major whining to the press that he was being pressured by several major labels to increase prices.
Jobs has insisted that an increase above the 99 cent threshold would turn innocent, law-abiding legal downloaders into a pack of rabid dogs intent to only get their digital music through illegal means. While he has a point, the online world knows that several other music services are thriving selling downloads up to $2.99 each. Beatport.com announced at the Billboard Dance Summit that they are selling 50,000 tracks per month at $1.99 each.
Jobs was particularly scratchy when speaking to the press at the Apple Expo show in Paris. He reportedly called the majors pushing for the increase "greedy" even though prices for individual songs are more expensive in Europe and Asia. Warner and EMI are pushing for the hike while Universal Music appears content with the 99 cent price point. Sony BMG declined to comment, but iTunes Japan launched without their catalog. In the US, iTunes accounts for over 80 percent of all legal downloads with 500,000 and counting to date.
The Future: Look for prices to increase to $1.29 or $1.49 in 2006. The contracts with the major labels are up for renewal and while Jobs may persuade some of the majors to remain at the 99 cent price point, others, notably Warner, will object. Even if Universal signs on at 99 cents, they will certainly have a clause that gives them the right to increase the price if another label renews at a higher rate.
Whether or not the download price does increase in 2006, it will not stem the sales of the high-flying, and very profitable, Apple iPod line. And despite Steve Jobs' pubic sniveling about the price increase, the reality is...
    ...he could care less.

half the bloody text is black

as for the 1.99 and what not for downloads.. i'd pay up to 3.00 for downloads, compared to buying vinyl and having a lot less of a selection i have no problem.

now the people buying downloads of radio shite and mainstream music are the ones that will complain about a price increas, I think anyway.

a dj used to spending upwards of 10.00 for a record that he may only like one side, haviung the choice of downloads at a fraction of the cost is invaluable.

Having the download at a fraction of the cost is good for your bankroll. But nothing really beats the feeling of having the ACTUAL record in your collection. Being able to go and look at it whenever you feel like it. Cd's with your own writing on them has nothing visually appealing to it at all.

But I like so many of us, dig the immediacy of cd's. I will always have a soft spot for vinyl.

Sorry about having half the text black. I just cut and pasted it all in there and that's how it came out. I don't know how to fix it.

Due to the global download price hike imposed on online media outlets, MercuryServer will be increasing the minimum post count required for downloads by 25% on Monday, October 10. Thank you for understanding and your continued support.

Who wrote this article? First off, iTMS is well over a million downloads now, not 500,000. Secondly, Beatport is chump change compared to iTunes. Maybe iTMS doesn't have the electronic music but it's the force to be reckoned with respect to download sites. And, you bet your ass Jobs cares about price tiers...

Whatever the price of digital downloads, the artist still only gets something silly like 6% of the price. The distributer and service provider seem to get the most of it, which is stupid

Im not too sure about this....unless the whole music market is going to inflate. I thought tracks were $ 0.99 for a reason....you can go out and buy a twelve track cd for $11.99, making each track more or less .99 cents. If a track is a $1.50, then a twelve track cd would cost $18. I think there has to be some proportionality between whats being sold on the net with whats being sold on the store shelves. If the market does inflate, as Warner Bros. may be suggesting, then that means somebody is stealing your money and putting it in their pockets.....so I say foch Warner Bros. if it comes down to some shit like that.
Push the envelope, watch it bend.

As long as you can get a good selection of tunes that is fine to raise the price. When I order from djdownloads and any other uk digital shop it almost 3 bucks anyways. But I also get the tracks I want without spending hrs looking for vinyl. Look at even edmdigital there tracks are 1.99. So for I-tunes to raise there prices they are just following the trend of everyone else.
