Now it's illegal to listen to music for free...

Money hungry RIAA now wants more money from radio stations that play music.

    RIAA eyes satellite broadcasters

The US industry music pressure group the RIAA is sizing up a new target in its bid to prevent people listening to copyright material for free. It is now said to be in discussions with the US satellite radio broadcasters.

At issue, according to the RIAA, the satellite broadcasters are providing music for free by allowing their subscribers to listen, record and play back ad-free radio stations. Which, of course, cannot be allowed.

The biggest of the satellite broadcasters is XM Satellite Radio which offers digital-quality broadcasts to its five million plus subscribers with more than 150 channels of music, news, talk, radio, sports, comedy and children's programming.

The RIAA is now threatening to sue XM Satellite for a billion dollars alleging that, as with Grokster, the station is encouraging people to copy and distribute copyrighted content.

However, the legal advice is that a 'fair use' defence that in the past has protected music and video cassette manufacturers from prosecution would prevail here. More likely is that the RIAA is using the threat as a bargaining tool to gain larger royalties from the stations.

Damn I am so tired of the RIAA's bullshit. We should all get together and sue them for taking the fun out of music.

ROFL, so let me get this straight... The Recording Industry Association of America is now bitching because stations are able to broadcast music in as close to perfect quality as ever before?!?!

I would've thought that being the RIAA you would applaud high quality of the recording artists. You could always record radio, what's so different now?

Stations already pay rights for the music, RIAA can just go and fuck themselves.

huh? Satellite broadcasters are paying rights for the music, AND the satellite subscribers are paying to listen to the music. what's the big deal?

money money money money man.....same is happening everywhere btw...

They're even going after students here, and fine them for sharing music. But how the fuck am I supposed to pay for all that shit? I have nothing to spend after I buy my vinyls (will me mp3s in the near future). Fuck em...they're trying to push the boundaries on this one, see how far they can go in making people pay even more.

So much for free airwaves. The radio was designed to promote new artists, once the RIAA has its way, radio will be a piece of pork.

indeed...radio was designed in the beginning for a means of effective communication. When corporations (CBS, RCA then) decided that it could be a profitable venture (selling radio sets, then licenses), it all went downhill.

The machine has gotten worse over the years with the exorbitant amounts of money changing hands and with a handful (in the US) owning the huge majority of all the stations...now that the pie is getting eaten into, they're getting worried and will do almost anything to keep their strangeholds on things.

But it's too late really...the amount of influence the digital age has is staggering and will continue to do so. Adapt or die off.

What is wrong with these people? What part of digital age don't they understand? I mean come on, record labels already make tons of money on CDs, a tons of money on mp3s donwloaded legally and the artists make tons of money by charging high ticket prices for their concerts, so where does that leave the average joe?????

RIAA? Gestapo? hmm... they sound alike to me!

This ain't before computer age where they had free reign and they don't like to see their pockets not getting as fat as they used to.

Satellite Radio rules! I can't stand standard radio where the music sucks ass. There's only so many stations on there that'll air top 40, R&B, country, etc. At least in Satellite Radio, they have a wide variety of music and other formats and something for everyone!

Have the Gestapo RIAA heard of WORKING with Satellite Radio and not against it?

The "music industry" is an antiquated middle man that no longer has any merit. They will attempt anything to protect there revenue streams. I'm sure what we are seeing with the RIAA "bullshit" will only get more ridiculous as the "industry" fall's apart from its own glut.

You know my fave excuse these assholes use for the extortionate price they put on everything . they use the money they make to scout for and develop new artists.. a lil fact in england we pay £14 - £16 for an album the artists takes £1 -£1.50 from that album the shop £3 . raw materials and production £.50 giving the record lables £10 -17.5% tax. if an album sells 3 million the label makes £ 20 million .. that is profits off only one major album and do they spend £20 mill a year on up and commings ...

Nothing, I mean NOTHING the RIAA does shocks me anymore. Apparently their argument has to do with "buffering" (caching) the music when you listen to it on your PC. This, they say is "recording" and is illegal. Fuckwits... The sound quality from an analog FM station is far better than what XM or Sirius is broadcasting to begin with. All of the stations on satellite are so compressed (one signal for 100+ stations) it's ridiculous. But to listen to these morons you'd think you were caching the original master recording. My only saving grace is I don't listen to the homogonized mainstream crap that is the majority of the shit they're complaining about.... Money hungry assholes, that light at the end of the tunnel you see is a train.
