Q. Why does your voice sound so different when you first hear yourself on a tape recording? A: Because you're hearing yourself only via sound waves through the air, whereas normally you also hear yourself via conduction through the solid bones and fleshy tissues of your head. Try plugging up your ears and talking and you won't sound very different to yourself even though you've shut out most of the airwaves, suggesting you hear yourself largely through body conduction. If you want your voice to sound really weird, breathe in some helium gas from a kid's balloon first. Sound travels about three times as fast in helium, pitching your voice up into the Donald Duck register. Soon as you breathe the gas on out of you, normalcy will return.
