            Mike,
Nice comments. I didn't mean to come across as anti-mac by any means as I really enjoy using them.

And, I know a 3 button mouse will work, but I hadn't heard you could customize the buttons to do various things - and it certainly doesn't come standard, which is a bit of a bummer when Apple really wants to sell you the whole package - which, is traditionally fairly over-priced from what I've been able to observe.

I do think MS is going to make a lot of forward leaps with Vista, especially in the hardware stability layer like someone else mentioned - this is the primary cause of most instability on Windows systems.

I think another issue people tend to minimize is the sheer mass of installed base that Windows has. It's going to get lambasted with so many people using it. Mac's have a much smaller base - AND they tend to be fairly technically literate (I'm generalizing, I know).

For instance, in the company where I work (in the IS department), I would say that 99% of our support issues are not really windows stability issues. They are simply dumb users not understanding what is going on. I don't think that is a Windows problem, I think it is a training problem (which is a corporate problem). People do stupid things with the machines, but they don't typically bring down windows (XP in our case), but typically just run into weirdo issues.

In terms of the push forward to Vista, Microsoft is obviously heeding customer feedback and making it a product that consumers want. All OS's have been evolving over time, just like Mac OS8 wasn't OSX. Windows 95 wasn't XP.

I'm hoping to Vista being a platform that is desirable to be on, and that consumers can finally sit back and say, "Hmm, that's kinda cool - Microsoft actually did it." -- I am not quite sure MS will exceed user expectations - but, I do think that they'll at least "get it" and give users something that they can actually be happy works and is more stable than ever before.

Another side-point about moving to Mac - although some of us would like to have that option - in reality it isn't all about big-name vendor software either. In most corporate worlds, you have tons of in-house developed code - along with line-of-business applications that are typically Windows based - and very focused on a certain type of business. (Like you mentioned with Accounting software). I work in healthcare, and there a ton of products out there that you can buy that does patient-related stuff, that you'd never see on any store shelf (and you'd never want to pay for it either) - but it helps us do our job.

In that regard, I am better off rallying for Bill Gates on this one and hoping he gets Vista right, than complain further and wish I could switch to Mac. At least in this position, I won't have that luxury.

            Good discussion, and good points.

I do hope that there would be an Apple approved way of running at least a dual-boot scenario on their new Intel hardware. I would hate to have two different Intel boxes just to run Mac vs. PC.

Which reminds me - what about Palladium? Maybe Microsoft will go the same route as Apple - and you'll have to buy an Intel setup with a BIOS that supports both mac and windows. Palladium is Microsoft's whole DRM security thing where you won't even be able to work with content that hasn't been decrypted down at the hardware levels...

Cuz I'd hate to have to make my next PC purchase and think, "Oh I have to buy one of those new Intel such-and-such that is Mac approved..." - because then MS (or someone else) will follow-suite, and the whole Intel thing will become fragmented based on what OS you run...

            That's just speculation....
may the groove be with you
