hey do djs use some sort of hearing protection? with the club being deafeningly loud, with monitors blasting at their sides, the only way to hear thru the headphones is to, well... turn it up even more! you can just imagine the potential for hearing damage after repeated nights at the clubs. i thought i once saw digweed put something in his ears before he began a set. and if you ever look at side pics of his head, it kinda sorta looks like something's in his ear... but maybe i'm wrong. are there special things you can put into your ear to attenuate the sound, yet still be able to hear clearly enough to mix?

Re: hearing protection for djs
most of the time speakers are placed in front of the booth or sides. reason is cleary as you stated, and feedback issues. if it is a proper set up, around the booth will be a sweet spot for the dj to be able to listen. really depends on the club. i think the worst part is the club floor.dead, yet alive. -
Re: hearing protection for djs
There are various hearing protections out there. Aparently there is one that is custom made for your ear and it can lower the decible range down like 20db or somewhere in that region. But I think they cost around $300.00Comment

Re: hearing protection for djs
Wearing ear protection will lower the sound blasting from the monitors and ambient noise, but wouldn't that make it harder to hear the headphones?

see the above post. you can get specially made earplugs that reduce the noise level without making it harder to hear (all frequencies still come through equally, unlike with normal earplugs)Last edited by day_for_night; October 31, 2005, 03:31:48 AM.Comment

Re: rearing protection for djs
I know bose makes sound deadening headphones. They eliminate outside noise and provide clear sound in the headset.
I believe they are most widely used in the aircraft industry to deaden the noise of aircraft engines.
Not sure how the quality is...but if its bose, i would bet the quality is great!

Re: rearing protection for djs
Those look pretty interesting. But right now $300 is way too much for a pair of headphones. Maybe if I was making $5-600 a week from dj'ing alone. Then I could see getting something like those.
From what I hear. JZ uses the Bose headphones to do his production work while on tour.Comment

Re: rearing protection for djs
True.... they aint cheap but I figure I've been using them a year now and went through two pairs of Sony V700's the previous year so I'm about to break even... maybe I don't want to use the word "break". D:FUSE turned me on to these awhile back and as much as I loved the Sony's they are just not built well.... and that's being nice. The top of the line Pioneer and Technic's are fine headphones as well and in my opinion better made than the Sony's but the Etymotic's, while taking some time to get used to are just incredible and well worth the money."only dead fish swim with the stream..."
