    It's 04:45, I'm testing my Westone UM2s

And they're preventing me from sleeping

Decided to splurge on a birthday present for myself two weeks ago, went ahead and ordered a pair of UM2s from www.earphonesolutions.com. They had this discount going and the item was backordered, hence the delay. But once the item was in stock, shipping was quick. Received it within three working days (international shipping). It was well packed, nothing was moving when I shaked the box (lightly!).

So I went out with colleagues to get wasted (it's a holiday here tomorrow, Deepavali), came home and found the package in my room. Debating between waiting till tomorrow or unwrapping it, I went ahead and am plugged in with them now.

To begin with, I've been using my Sony EX-70 for the past four years, so they're my only comparison.

I'm testing the UM2 with the short Comply tips (soft foams). The whole setup is surprisingly comfortable. It was a bit weird looping the wire above my ear but the earphones are made for that and once you've looped them, the phones fit easily into the ear. I think the short tips fit, they go right in and seem to be a good seal.

I listened to RITM - Timebomb and right now, Snake Sedrick is playing in my head. And I mean in my head. The sound is right in there My 4th Gen iPod is at half volume when I usually turn it up to 70-80%.

Alright I'm not an audiophile, I don't listen to classical or acoustic music much though I'd definitely try the earphoens with those music at some stage. All I can say is (out of the box), the soundstage is smaller than I expected from reading online, but everything is crystal clear. The bass is tight and punchy, not boomy but there's definitely a presence--which makes me wonder because the other IEMs such as the e2c or e3c are less "bassy." Mid range is all there. So's the hi-ends. The seperation is beautiful, except the soundtage is feeling kinda small so everything's all in my head (maybe that's how it's meant to sound). There's no distortion at all, except a slight hissing from the iPod before the music plays--I assume it's picking up some kinda distortion from the moving parts or whatever. But the hissing disappears once the music starts, no biggie.

Maybe I'm just pissed drunk but I'm getting shivers when a vocal comes in (15:17 into Snake Sedrick's set). I was getting shivers listening to Hallucienda too. Fuck I'm wide awake now

I just tried tweaking the sound with the iPod's EQ thingie. Turned on the bass booster, there's a definite increase in presence. But I haven't decide if I like it, cos the sound seems to have gone slightly muddy. Tried the treble booster and I don't hear any noticable difference, Turned off the EQ, Slight difference. I think the UM2s' bass is punchy enough without any EQing at this stage.

I'm gonna crash and leave the earphones to burn in for a bit. Can't wait to take them out for a walk!

I got pics and video. But I will upload them in the morning. I need to smoke this nice phat joint and just close my eyes and replay the amazingness in my head.
