Re: How about a big round of "F*** You!" to Sony?

Sony (NYSE: SNE - news) has admitted that it included a stealth rootkit on some music CDs shipped in 2005 and has issued an update to remove the hidden software one day after it was discovered. The company had drawn criticism from security experts who warned that the technology could serve as a tool for hackers.
This is really scary that we try to protect ourselves as best as we can from malware and dirty software, then yet, one of the most respected companies would install files on yourcomputer without your permission. Then, within one day of somebody smart enough to find it, Sony sends out a patch to remove it. Very dirty business.

well maybe this will help in the battle that so many people are in against these companies. unfortunately for the big companies, hackers and crackers will always help us other folk to be able to get around anything those companies can do.

First of all, it is indeed a fact that their music CDs install software without mention in the EULA.

Secondly, the link you posted is a RESPONSE to the bad press they've been recieving. Had their bullshit card not been pulled, they would have more than happily gone on with their scheme, so much for "nice enough."

FURTHERMORE, their "Service Pack" does not remove their software, but only the cloaking component. There is still no way to remove the software which runs all the time and consumes processor power.

you = WRONG! Try not being an ass about it next time, we are all friends here, there is no need for that tone

Your comment was "no way to uninstall it", I provided the link thats shows otherwise, how were you not wrong? This thread was posted AFTER Sony came out with the service pack. Check Slashdot's archives if you don't believe me.

I quoted the complete sentence but had no problem with the EULA comment, just the "no way to uninstall it", which is completely false. Your right on the cloaking element, but once the files are visable they are removable too.

There are other companies doing this and its been known for some time, this is nothing new, most of them without EULAs at all. Yes, Sonys coming under pressure has probably pushed them to come out with the tool, but I do consider this 'nice' since I can almost guarentee you won't see the same from other companies. This DRM technique (one of the many) was made by xcp-aurora and who knows how many other companies are licensed to use it.

Personally I'm glad this has brought about so much awareness. Maybe people will start to take interest in DRM, Broadcast Flags, etc, and what it means to future products.

You read too much into my "tone", I just get annoyed when people state things as fact when their not. No need to .

Seems like we're down to details at the point, and there's truth in what we're both saying (I still maintain that I have yet to see tangible proof that there is uninstall program for the process itself, I'm very particular about what my CPU is doing).

All I as is that next time you come at me with a, "Hey guys, check out the latest news...." As opposed to, "WRONG!" when all I was doing was simply recapping the article for someone who didn't feel up to speed enough to read the whole thing. No hard feeelings as long as we're clear on that.

Sony: If You're Bankrupt, You Must Delete All Our Music
Contributed by Mike on Wednesday, November 9th, 2005 @ 02:55PM
                          from the not-having-a-good-week,-Sony? dept.
While, at some level, this seems like just piling on to the PR disaster facing Sony-BMG following the rootkit fiasco, it's still important to highlight some of the ridiculous things the company has done. After telling everyone that rootkits don't matter, because no one knows what they are, and doing various other questionable moves -- almost all of which amount to "trust us," some people decided to figure out just what kind of bargain they were getting when they trust Sony-BMG. While it's already been shown that the end user license agreement that comes with Sony's copy protected CDs doesn't disclose the rootkit functionality that weakens the security on your computer and is quite difficult to uninstall without breaking parts of your computer -- and also doesn't disclose that the CD phones home occasionally -- there's a lot of things that the EULA does tell you. The folks at the EFF went through it and pulled out some of the more ridiculous terms. By far, the absolute best term in the EULA is that if you file for bankruptcy, you need to delete the music. Recall, of course, that when you buy a standard, non-copy protected CD, there is no EULA at all. However, Sony would apparently prefer that all of you out there who have gone through any form of bankruptcy didn't listen to their music.
